SpawZ Dog in North Seattle is a dishonest business run by a verbally abusive owner who sells Groupons full of fraudulent claims. This place should be avoided at all costs. I hate writing negative reviews, but I'm so appalled by this business' unprofessional, abusive, and dishonest behavior that I'd be remiss if I didn't share.
I just called the Merchant and spoke with Anne Marie Shields, who identified herself as the owner of the business. I told her I wanted to make an appointment for my post-operative dog to walk on the underwater treadmill. She was abrupt and not at all friendly, but I gave her the benefit of the doubt and we began discussing availability.
When I finally thought we had all the drama resolved, just out of curiosity, I asked her what type of licensed practitioners she had onsite. She said, "We don't have any." I told her I read on the Groupon's description that there were in fact licensed practitioners there. She scoffed at me, telling me to read her website because it "clearly states we don't have any licensed practitioners." Because I don't actually need one anyway at this point in my dog's recovery, I attempted to drop it and told her I'd be fine with the self-service appointment.
She was clearly agitated and began backpedaling. She suddenly declared that she actually wouldn't accept the Groupon for underwater treadmill appointments. I pointed out to her that she already made the appointment knowing what service it was for, and that the language in the description for the Groupon specifically mentions the underwater treadmill. Practically yelling at me, she said fine, she'd honor it. Then just as fast, she changed her tune again and said she'd have to check and call me back. She also had the audacity to say that *I* was being difficult (what with all my expecting her to adhere the rules and policies of the Groupon and all).
When she called back, she told me that she will "only honor the Groupons for doggy swims, which doesn't include treadmill use." I had pulled up the Groupon while I awaited her return call so I was able to read to her the following language directly from Groupon's advertising language:
"SpawZ Dog allows canines to splash under the careful supervision of the doggy daycare??s licensed practitioners and offers private swim sessions that focus on low-impact workouts to help build strength and range of motion, benefiting dogs with arthritis, sore joints, and hip dysplasia. Elderly dogs enjoy ??senior swim,? where they can paddle gently without contending with young pups cannonballing, while water-phobic dogs can stay secure by walking on an underwater treadmill."
She interrupted me repeatedly while I read this to her. She yells and says I should just go get a refund from Groupon. I again emphasize the last sentence, "...while water-phobic dogs can stay secure by walking on an underwater treadmill." I ask her how she can deny that the Groupon covers the underwater treadmill when it's right there in the very language that convinced me to buy the Groupon in the first place? She says it's just too bad, and she's not honoring it.
I let her know that if she's going to be dishonest and sell something she has no intention of honoring, that I will file a complaint with Groupon, the BBB, and alert the Yelp community other pet-related review sites about her fraudulent behavior. She laughed and hung up on me.
The owner of SpawZ Dog clearly doesn't think much of you or your opinions. Please spread the word. This woman and her business are highly unprofessional, and knowing what I know now about her personal behavior, I'd never trust her with my dog or my money.
I'm not quite sure how this dog torture chamber stays in business. Perhaps it is the county budget cuts. The daycare and /or boarding dogs do not "play all day "as suggested. The dogs get locked up in tiny kennels that are reminnisent of the 50's. I asked that my dog had a swim camp hour. I came early to find my dog soaking wet , shaking & terrified in a chain link kennel. The owners response..."buy a towel for $3.00. This place is beyond ridiculous. The owner knows NOTHING about dogs. The pound is a preferable place to this. joint.
We have a Cairn Terrier who loves his visits at Spawz! He takes swim classes and loves the pool. Whenever we go away on vacation we leave Buster at Spawz knowing he will be cared for at a wonderful place.
Pros: Great Place
This place is just about the worst place you could bring your dog. It looks like Charlie Manson could be hanging around any corner. The lady at the front desk is very rude and does not know how to handle dogs. When I picked my dog up at the end of the day he had a cut under his eye and was still soaking wet from the pool. The lady at the front desk is extremely overweight and looks to have some type of glandular problem. Perhaps this is the root of her work ethic. Please do not bring your dog to this place
Cons: Very rude staff, unprofessional
I found Spawz after my Dachshund had his 3rd back surgery a year ago. I checked out several places and this one had the best resources. He had been given about a 60% chance of being able to walk again after the surgery. When he started day care he had very little feeling in his back legs and could not stand up. Spawz made sure he had his meds on time and his own space. His kennel was in a small suite so he would not be bothered by the other dogs. Due to the diligent care and therapy he received, he is now able to run. I contribute his mobility to the care given by Ann Marie and her staff. You can see him showing off his stuff at the start of the new video.
Pros: Convenient location, hours are good, clearn, staff cares
Cons: Should call first to set up a tour, staff can be very busy
My Henry loves his daycare. The owner is very sweet and the staff loves all of the dogs. It is very clean and there are large rooms for the dogs to play in and a large clean cemented fenced area outside for the dogs to run and piddle. Henry has made many friends here and has been a much better behaved dog since going to Spaws. We love this place!!!!!
Pros: My dog is well taken care of here. Large areas to run.
Cons: You can smell the pool when you walk in, but at least you know it is a clean pool.
I can't imagine what motivated all08 and cnbar to give this facility a one star. we have taken our doxie there for swimming twice a week for almost 8 months. She's lost three pounds (over 10% of her body weight) and is a new dog. Full of energy and canine confidence. I have been totally impressed by the energy, cleanliness and attitude of the workers AND the doggie guests. I easily give this a five star and would recommend Spawz to anyone needing a good loving daycare for their pet or exercise for therapy or fun.
I would be happy to give a reference.
Pros: Everything...lots of variety and enrichment for the dogs.
Cons: no cons...well, you can't just walk in you have to ring a bell to be let in.
Spawz was recommended to me by our vet as a good possible source of excercise with their water therapy for our 12 year old dog that has arthritis. I contacted Spawz and set up a visit. They staff was very friendly and helpfull. I was very happy with what I saw and the service that we received that first day. We have now been going for over 3 months and we are at the facility twice a week. During my visits I see very happy dogs in the play area and see the dogs being taken outside for breaks very regularly. The swim therapists have been working with our dog in the swim pool and I want everyone to know what a fantastic job they do here. They truly have a passion for animals and I trust them 110%. My dog loves to go there and loves the workers. What I have seen in the workers here is that this is way more then just a job to these people. They are truly passionate towards dogs and want to help your animal feel it's best and enjoy the experience. I would HIGHLY recommend Spawz to anyone looking for a daycare or a therapy option for older dogs or dogs recovering from injury.
Pros: clean facility, friendly workers, clean pool, convenient hours
Cons: therapy pool not offered all evenings
I have used Spawz Dog for over 8 months for both my doggie daycare and boarding needs. I am very appreciative that they have always made space for my girls - be it for a few hours or a few weeks and sometimes with very little notice. Spawz Dog is always sparkling clean and the staff are friendly and helpful! My dogs always hop out of the car without even a backward glance at me! It is important to me that my pooches have both doggie and human interaction when I am away and this is achieved at Spawz Dog. At several other places I checked out, my dog would never be touched by a human for the whole time I was on vacation - unless I paid extra! Thank-you Spawz Dog for treating my dogs as if they were your own.
The people here are very cold and apathetic towards the dogs. It is crystal clear that their hearts are not into it. Found another place where my dog is much happier and the staff obviously love what they are doing & it shows.
Pros: convenient to my work, clean
Cons: apathetic staff, unhappy dog
This place in one big fat lie hidden behind a cute facade. I dropped by unannounced during regular business hours to take a tour of this facility. My first clue that something was not right should have been the locked front door and the lack of web cams. The only person there was a harsh older woman who was clearly annoyed that I did not make an appointment. The "5700 sq. feet of play area" which is claimed on the website is a big fat lie. The so called "play area" is chopped up into several small wire kennels and cages. I was told there were a dozen or so daycare and overnight dogs on that particular day however only 3 dogs were in the play area. The rest of the so called "fun daycare dogs" were stuck in kennels, cages or crates. All of them were obviously miserable. Only a couple of the dogs had water bowls and of these few, most were empty. None of the dogs had beds or even a blanket. The "largest outside area in Seattle" is also a big fat lie. It looked like a concrete junkyard.. The dogs do not have free access to the outside. I was pitched a real hard sell on the hydrotherapy pool and treadmill. The pool smelled HORRIBLY strong of bleach & chemicals. On my way out, I again had to pass by the cages of the sad, pathetic daycare dogs. I could not get out of that place fast enough!!! My hair and clothes just reaked of chlorine and bleach the rest of the day and I felt nauseated. What absolute torture it must be for a dogs sensitive nose to have to sit and breathe in those chemicals all day long. I would tie my dog to a tree in the backyard before I would subject him to this miserable place.
Anne-Marie, the owner, is an extrodinary person who truely has a passion and a warm heart towards looking out for the very best for dogs. She takes extra special care. The new pool and treadmill are going to be awesome when they are done in the next couple of weeks.. like nothing else anywhere I've seen in Seattle!!
Pros: Thumbs up! A treadmill and pool for my dog.
