i was a regular here when i lived in the neighborhood. the staff was always very friendly and learned quickly what my favorite items on the menu were. plenty of the dining near union square is pricey, sterile, and impersonal but not tempura house. great prices, good sushi and tempura, delicious green tea (and green tea ice cream), and not at all pretentious. check it out sometime for a low-key sushi experience.
Pros: value, staff, casual
I love coming here on Friday nights. Choose the bar sitting and you will get all the nicest perks a conversation with Tony, who runs the place (he is full of stories, and they never repeat plus he does give a lot of valuable sake recommendations); a nice chat with the chefs; and the freshest fish recommendations. Plus, the sushi chefs run the show, so you dont have to worry about the waitresses not being around.
Pros: fresh fish, Entertainment, great sake
I had been here a year ago for dinner and it was great, but went for lunch two weeks ago and had the worst service ever. The place was packed and we had to flag down a server after sitting w/menus for 10 mins. After 30 mins, my lunch date's sushi came but not my entree. Our server never came back and after another 20 mins. we flagged down our server and asked for the check. Lunch times are usually limited, they need to get more help.
Great Japanese food, great service, great location!
Nice, cozy place located in the heart of san francisco. Whenever I visit the city I make sure to have at least one meal here. The sushi is the best that I've tried in the area, and the entrees are tasty and hearty in portion. I know the resturaunt has been at this location for quite some years now, so if you're looking for a trendy, colorful scenery...it may not be your place. But don't let the decor stop you from their mouth water plates. Few mediocre experiences with service, but most time friendly and welcoming. And after a fulfilling meal, I always walk it off by shopping around downtown.
Try their sushi combos!
Pros: Best sushi, lots to pick from men, great shopping area
this is a very convient place for me to go and get my sushi, right of of union square. the sushi is great, i like the cucumber. i dont like the meals so much, but the sushi is great and freshly made. the service could be better, the drinks are not refilled at all during meals, you must ask, but overall a nice place to run in and out for sushi.
Pros: fast, inexpensive
Cons: not great service
Live up the block and it's always a great standby when I don't feel like going the distance for sushi. Their sushi has always been fresh and buttery smooth (large turnover bcs of all the tourists in the area), the service is just standard. No experimentation going on here - just your basic Japanese fare at reasonable prices.
Pros: Close to my apt, Consistently fresh, Reasonably priced
Cons: Zero ambiance, Tourist clientele
