Dr. Charles W. Washam

★★★★★
Dr. Washam offers psychotherapy to individuals, couples, and families in the following areas: abuse and trauma, addiction, adolescent behavior, anger management, anxiety, bi-polar, depression, divorce, and grief. Psychodynamic therapy is a talking cure based on the method of free association and draws on theories and practices of existentialism, analytical psychology and psychoanalysis. In its fundamental rule, the patient is invited to say whatever comes to mind without censoring or editing the flow of memories or ideas, like considerations of context, decency, feelings of shame or guilt, and other objections. This therapeutic process helps patients understand and resolve their problems by increasing awareness of their inner world and its influence over relationships, both past and present. Psychodynamic therapy provides an effective treatment for a range of emotional disorders, and can contribute significantly to a patient's mental and physical health, to their sense of well being, and to their ability to manage their lives more effectively. It differs from most other therapies in aiming for deep seated change in personality and emotional development.

Dr. Washam provided a caring, supportive and safe environment for my husband and me to openly discuss our marital concerns. After just five sessions we have already developed a new appreciation for the importance of sensitive, honest, accepting communication. Dr. Washam is the best.

I have been a patient of Dr. Washams for the past year. He is an excellent diagnostician, and has a keen ability to not judge or blame but rather understand and accept. Dr. Washam has been a tremendous help in my healing.

I wish that all my health care professionals cared about their patients as much as Dr. Washam does. His boundless energy, careful attention to detail, and his patience, understanding and clinical acumen are unparalleled. In my experience, Dr. Washam is direct, challenging, and is committed to helping others discern their truth and live authentically, and congruently, from that place. I have gained new self-awareness and my pain in life is diminishing.

We worked with Dr. Washam in family therapy because we have had difficulty blending our two families. My husband has one nine year old daughter and I have two boys, ages eleven and eight. The tension between our children was out of control and hurting the marriage; a lot of arguing, parents taking sides, discipline problems, etc. Dr. Washam has helped all of us improve our communication, and state our feelings in a clear and respectful way. Dr. Washam is kind, direct, to the point, but firm. He's been a tremendous help to us all.

Top notch, incredibly thorough, he takes many, many notes, and always works closely with my primary doctor. Dr. Washam is generous with his time, he is upbeat, and shows compassionate and supportive interest in my overall health.

Dr. Washam is compassionate and very understanding, and he helped make such a stressful time in my life go as smoothly as possible. His focus and high-energy can make you feel like you are his only patient, and I recommend him to anyone in need of a highly skilled therapist.

Dr. Washam has exceeded my expectations, even after reading his many exemplary reviews. To begin, Dr. Washam is very down to earth; he is practical in his counsel and often times he will use sport's metaphors to help elucidate complicated and complex ideas. He listens carefully, pays attention to detail, and takes a ton of notes. There is never any doubt that he is fully present in each session, and often times I leave feeling emotionally exhausted. That said, he has helped me like no other.

Dr. Washam is friendly, thoughtful, and has been of tremendous help. His style and approach are quite different from the other psychologists that I have seen over the years. He does not do "cover your ass" therapy where the doctor sits in a chair, says very little, and occasionally nods. Instead, Dr. Washam is energetic, talkative, and a masterful teacher, as he breaks down complicated psychological insights and helps make them easier to understand and apply in my life. His analytic perspective is challenging and provoking, but you never feel judged or dismissed.

We have worked together on and off since 2014, and he has helped me live a fulfilling and productive life, with a borderline personality disorder. I recently completed my Ph.D. and I never would have stayed with it were it not for our work together. Dr. Washam is my therapist, my mentor, and my friend, and I am forever grateful.

Dr. Washam is highly intelligent, skilled in treating severe depression and bi-polar disorders, and has remarkably helped my family. Dr. Washam is that rare therapist who somehow balances compassion with directness. We feel very fortunate and blessed to have him in our tri-county area.

Thank you Dr. Washam. I always love what you have to say, and how you say it so clearly and compassionately. Your modern Freudian perspective is supportive and gently reveals the truth. Being able to find the real "you" - day by day - is a treasure for myself and those around me.

I am 19 years old and throughout this past year I've been crapped on and lied about on Facebook. In May, it got so bad that I tried to kill myself and ended up in the hospital. I've seen Dr. Washam since leaving the hospital and am finally beginning to want to live again. Depression can be like a black hole, and at times you can't see any way out of it. But Dr. Washam has been a huge help. He's intelligent, understanding, and funny, and I love his dog Riley. It has been a long time since I've felt hopeful about my future.

I am 31 years old and a single mother of two children. My divorce was three years ago, and it has been rough. I have been in counseling for the past year because of feeling anxious and overwhelmed. My first therapist was of little value, as she seemed disinterested and didn't talk much. So, a friend suggested that I go see Dr. Washam. I've met with him four times so far and he has been terrific. He has a direct approach and can uncover problems quickly and at the deepest level. Dr. Washam is an excellent therapist who I strongly recommend.

Our 15 year old son was suspended from high school for sending inappropriate text messages. The Principal has required an evaluation and counseling. We met with Dr. Washam and he was surprisingly refreshing. He is friendly, warm, and has a good sense of humor. My son liked him immediately, and we can already see some improvement in his attitude. Dr. Washam is direct and cuts through crap like butter. He focuses on the underlying core issues and talks about behavior as symptoms of internal conflicts. We have also started family counseling and this has shed additional light on our son's behavior and attitude. In my opinion, Dr. Washam is the best in the tri-county area, I have told many of my friends, and I strongly recommend him.

I never thought that I would write a review, and I never ever thought I would go see a therapist. My wife and I have been apart for three weeks because of my anger issues and lying. I haven't been honest with her because she usually doesn't listen to me so it has been easier to lie and avoid the circumstances. Well, not anymore, because I'm out of the house living with my parents. I have met with Dr. Washam three times now, and I'm feeling less depressed and angry. I've come to understand that my wife is a lot like my mother, and I grew up fighting with my mom because she was very controlling. I'm beginning to see that my wife's behavior reminds me of growing up with my mom, and I just go into a rage or will avoid the situation altogether. Dr. Washam has been working with me to explore my growing up years and how I have unresolved conflicts from my past. He is very intelligent and direct; he cuts right to the chase and uncovers the deeper problems. I think he is great and I strongly endorse him.

I am not the type of person who would ever write a review. But, I just want to pass on to others my experience with Dr. Washam. I sent him a text about an appointment after reading about him on his webpage and his many reviews. He contacted me within a couple of hours, even though I know how busy he is. When we first met, he spent a good hour with me listening carefully and taking many pages of notes. I was impressed with his direct, insightful questions and comments.

It is very important for everyone to know that if you want to see a therapist who gets right to the heart of the problem, who is direct, doesn't mince words, yet is kind, sensitive, and compassionate, there is no one better. Dr. Washam has helped me improve my marriage because I have been angry and jealous with my wife. A lot of my feelings had more to do with me, even though I didn't believe it at first, and Dr. Washam has helped me understand the deeper meanings and causes of my behaviors. Finally, his dog Riley (a goldendoodle) helped me feel comfortable and relaxed from the get go. I never thought I would say it, but I enjoy my sessions and I know that I am growing and improving as a person.

My mother is dying from stage four breast cancer, and I have struggled making myself go to work and I'm like a zombie at home. My Christian faith is essential in my life. The hospital chaplain gave me Dr. Washam's name for grief counseling. I have met with him for seven sessions so far and we have been focusing on my anger and guilt which have been fueling my depression. Dr. Washam has helped me understand the stages of grief and we also have had serious conversations about God, suffering, and death. Since Dr. Washam is an Episcopal priest, he is genuinely spiritual and pastoral, and he combines this in a helpful manner with our therapy. He has been a bright light in my otherwise very dark life, and I recommend him highly.

I have been smoking cigarettes for 20 some years. When I found out that I have lung cancer, I was referred to Dr. Washam to cope with both the upsetting news and the difficult treatment that was forthcoming. Since I am Catholic, and Dr. Washam is an Episcopal priest, I found his spiritual and pastoral side to be comforting as I struggled with anger, fear, and depression. Dr. Washam has helped me through a lot, no doubt, and I don't think I could be fighting this without him. He has given me insight on many underlying behavioral issues that have already improved my life. While I don't know if I'm going to beat the cancer, I am very thankful for Dr. Washam's guidance, support, and empathy.

Dr. Washam is the best therapist I could have asked for. I went to see him because I couldn't get out of bed, didn't want to. I was also put on suspension from work for yelling at a coworker. Turns out I have been suffering from depression for awhile, as well as poor impulse control. I've seen Dr. Washam seven times so far and don't plan on ending anytime soon. He's a great guy to just talk to, but really also helps you fix whatever issues you may be going through.

It was difficult for me to select a therapist because I wasn't sure how I'd be treated since I'm gay. I had been with my partner for almost six years, and when I came home from work a couple of weeks ago, he had packed up everything and left with no note. For about a week, I couldn't get out of bed I was so upset! I felt horrible, like I had the flu. A friend of mine gave me Dr. Washam's name and I was surprised with how kind he was on the phone, and the time he took with me. I have been seeing Dr. Washam once a week and I'm truly beginning to feel so much better! The counseling at first was both painful and difficult, because I did not want to face some of my issues. It means so much to me to have Dr. Washam as my therapist.

I'm a 26 year old female from Cincinnati and I started seeing Dr. Washam a few months ago after a horrible breakup with my fianc (who I had met on social media through mutual friends). A few months before our wedding, I learned that my fianc was cheating, using Tinder to find new girls in the surrounding area. Dr. Washam has been absolutely incredible, helping me every step of the way through these murky waters. I have found him to be very kind, caring, honest and encouraging. While I'm already doing significantly better since the breakup, I plan on continuing to see Dr. Washam as my life and mood in general has improved tremendously.

I am 28 years old, and have been experiencing social anxiety and panic attacks. My doctor referred me to Dr. Charles Washam for help. In our first meeting, he took many pages of notes and stayed with me for more than an hour. He talked to my doctor and I was prescribed a new medicine. Much of my problem has to do with break ups in relationships and constant drama on Facebook. I have seen him three times, and I am doing much better. Dr. Washam is kind, a very good listener, sensitive, and refreshingly direct. I like him very much, and I trust him which is hard for me to do. Finally, his dog Riley helped me feel comfortable from the very beginning!

To begin with, Dr. Washam is so incredibly different from most! Over the years I would have loved to have my doctors as kind and caring as he is. My past psychologist would never answer a phone call and she would never call back when I left a message. I thought all doctors were the same but I must say that Dr. Washam not only spoke with me for probably 20 minutes on the phone when I first called, but in our sessions, he never rushes me even when I know I am beyond my time and he has someone waiting in his reception area. I appreciate that he is more open and spontaneous rather than rigid when it comes to listening and helping, and his overall dedication to his patients is in my experience unmatched.

I was referred to Dr. Washam from St Elizabeth's for heroin addiction counseling to go along with my suboxone medical treatment. I am 27years old, female, and we connected right away. He is direct, challenging and intense, but also kind and understanding. For the first time in a long time, I have hope that I can get my life back again.

The demon of addiction can be overwhelming and I recommend him to anyone going through this ordeal. He works closely with my primary doctor in monitoring my progress, which has led to beneficial changes in my medicine.

For years I thought I had ADD and my doctor sent me to Dr. Washam for an evaluation. After a good hour plus of talking he believed that I suffered from obsessive compulsive disorder and generalized anxiety. He sent his notes to my doctor and I was prescribed Lexapro. I have met with him 3 times now and I am beginning to feel normal. I don't worry all the time; I don't count numbers or study license plates, and I can even leave for work without checking if the doors are locked multiple times. Most of all, I can concentrate better at work, not get so easily distracted, and I can complete projects on time. He has been a great help and I plan on continuing with him for awhile.

My family thinks I have a drinking problem and anger issues. My St Elizabeth's doctor sent me to Dr. Washam and what a huge difference he has made in my life. Turns out that I have been depressed for at least one year, ever since my brother was killed by an 18 wheeler. I thought I had gotten over it, but I didn't know that my temper, missing classes and drinking was a part of being depressed. Also, I broke up with my girlfriend of 3 years because I just couldn't feel much for her anymore, and now I regret it.

I have seen Dr. Washam since early November, usually once a week, and I am doing much better. He is very nice, he listens carefully and he is a good teacher. What he does the best is that he helps me see that my behaviors are an outward expression of my feelings (that I didn't know I had). As I continue becoming more self aware, I know that I am maturing and that I am getting rid of my depression and anger. I am extremely positive about Dr Washam.

I saw Dr. Washam for the first time roughly one week before Christmas at his Northern Kentucky office. I was immediately impressed by the office atmosphere and decor, and Dr. Washam was warm, welcoming, and an excellent listener. I have already scheduled another appointment with Dr. Washam next week, but this time with my husband--who, surprisingly, is eager to come. I believe that with a handful of sessions, our marriage will be stronger and we will learn how to address and correct some of the issues we are having. I highly recommend Dr. Washam.

I live in Alexandria, KY and my husband has just left me and my 8 year old son for another woman. We have been married 14 years and I thought everything was going fine. Clearly not! My lawyer gave me Dr. Washam's name for counseling, and he has helped me beyond words. I was an emotional wreck - couldn't eat, couldn't sleep, couldn't stop yelling or crying. In only three sessions, I am feeling much more in control and I am thinking clearly. Dr. Washam has helped me a lot, and I recommend him with all my heart.

My husband and I recently began seeing Dr. Washam for marriage counseling, and we couldn't be more pleased with the results. Dr. Washam is patient, kind, sensitive and intelligent, and is not afraid to be direct when necessary. If you're serious about mending your relationship or marriage, then I definitely recommend Dr. Washam.

I am from Cincinnati, and I recently went to see Dr. Washam in his Crestview Hills (NKY) office. The office was quite nice, as opposed to some of the other therapists' offices I have been to. I felt safe and welcome, and as a result I was able to feel comfortable and discuss my recent issues. Dr. Washam also brings his amazing golden doodle, Riley, who is literally a blessing. Last week, I began sobbing and Riley immediately got up, came over, and comforted me. Riley and Dr. Washam make an amazing team! In the few short weeks that I have been seeing Dr. Washam, my mood has improved greatly and I'm becoming happier as I make changes in my home life. Dr. Washam is by far the best therapist I have worked with.

I have lived in Lexington all my life, and I married my husband when I was 23 after meeting him at UK. We have been married now for 7 years, and we have been fighting seemingly non-stop for the past year or two. We'll fight, make up, and then start the process all over again. It's exhausting.

A family friend encouraged us to see Dr. Washam (he had helped her immensely when she lost her parents). I was hesitant at first, but when I saw these reviews and heard several people in Lexington speak so highly of him, I called to schedule an appointment. From the very beginning, Dr. Washam was professional and kind, and was able to schedule us for the following week. With such a large practice, I was happy we didn't have to wait long!

My husband and I have seen Dr. Washam now for about 5 weeks, and without going into too much detail, we are doing much much better. It's hard to know what's wrong when you're the one buried in it, but having Dr. Washam's input and insight into our relationship has opened our eyes to countless things we could do better. And, we are doing just that. We are fighting much less, and it's clear that we are both far more aware of our actions and words, and I'm getting back to that feeling I had in the beginning of our relationship. It's amazing. Just by talking through some of our issues, concerns, and desires, my husband and I have been able to reconnect and understand the other's frustrations.

Truly, I never thought that we could be close again like this, but it just goes to show that communication is critical, and having Dr. Washam there for us to guide us through this process has been crucial. Writing this review was the least I could do - thank you, Dr. Washam, for all you've done for me and Steve.

I recently took my two teenage kids to see Dr. Washam and I am very pleased with the results. They've been acting out a lot recently ever since my wife (their mother) got sick. Dr. Washam helped them see that their anger and behavior was causing even more harm to the family, something that I just couldn't get them to understand. It's great to see them coping better now. My wife and I will begin seeing Dr. Washam next week to help us get through our own issues and her sickness.

I am 42 years old and have recently had a Mastectomy. The months preceding the surgery were excruciating; I was on an emotional roller coaster. The oncologist referred me to Dr. Washam to help deal with my anger, anxiety, and depression. I have seen Dr. Washam for about four months, and he has made all the difference in how I have handled this matter. He is warm, supportive, smart, and kind. He has helped me keep perspective on my personal life: my marriage, three children, and my job. Trust me, Dr. Washam has been a steady, guiding presence throughout this frightening and overwhelming experience. I am thankful that my health is improving and my spirit is much more bright and positive. For weeks Dr. Washam has patiently listened to me alternate between ranting and raging about how unfair life is, and then switch to constantly crying about potentially losing everyone I love. I cannot recommend him strongly enough.

I am 45 years old, recently diagnosed with bipolar, and my wife recently learned that I was having an affair with a co-worker. Dr. Washam made time to see me late last week because I wanted to just jump in my car and drive away as far as I could. Dr. Washam patiently listened to me, and has been kind, insightful, honest and direct. I have decided to try the medicine that he suggested to my doctor, and I plan on beginning marital therapy soon. Because of Dr. Washam, I now have some hope that I will be able to turn my life around and be a good husband and person.

I attend a large non-denominational Christian church and I have been meeting with my minister for marriage and family counseling. A few weeks ago he recommended that my husband and I meet with Dr. Charles Washam so we could explore our problems on a deeper level. We have met with him five times and we are already getting along better. The biggest change is that we listen to each other more carefully and he has helped us understand the importance of having respect and trust for one another. Dr. Washam stresses the biblical understanding of marriage as being "mutually yoked" and a "helpmate" to each other, and that our children are a representation of the love we have and show each other. We now make special time for us instead of losing ourselves by getting too caught up in running the business of the family (school, soccer, dance, church, etc). This counseling has helped us more than we ever thought possible.

After gathering a list from my insurance company of "in network" psychotherapists, I began researching each doctor and reading reviews. It was soon obvious that Dr. Washam was the best reviewed psychotherapist in the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky area. Having seen Dr. Washam now for roughly ten sessions in an attempt to repair my damaged marriage, I can attest that his reviews are extremely accurate, as Dr. Washam has gone above and beyond to help me repair my broken relationship with my husband. Dr. Washam has seen us both individually and together, and has helped us gain new insight on our relationship, improve our communication and coping mechanisms, and help us rekindle our love for one another. I wanted to leave this review for those who are likewise struggling with marriage or relationship issues, because Dr. Washam is the answer you've been looking for; he certainly was for me, and I am very thankful for all that he has done for my husband and me.

I actually never thought that I would take the time to write a review for someone. However, my life came to a halt this past May when I came home from work to find that my wife had left and taken our two children with her. Essentially, she had taken everything with her, drained our bank accounts, and left a note telling me that she was never coming back. I was heartbroken, angry -- lost and hopeless.

I have been seeing Dr. Washam twice a week since early June, and from the outset I was contemplating suicide. Bottom line now is that I am coping much better with my depression and anxiety, no longer wish to end my life, and my wife and I are back together again.

I have come to accept that, in the past, my behavior has been narcissistic and destructive, and I am committed to remaining in therapy with Dr. Washam indefinitely. He is quite insightful and caring.

I am in the process of transforming my life and making necessary personality changes. The in-depth therapy with Dr. Washam has been intense and certainly painful at times, but without a doubt a life changer. I now recommend Dr. Washam to all my family and friends, and will remain forever thankful for what he's done for me.

I have been going through a very bitter and angry divorce since February 2015. My husband and I have been married twelve years, and we have two children (two girls, ages ten and eight). My husband is a lawyer which certainly has made our divorce proceedings more brutal than necessary, and this ordeal has put me in a serious depression while hurting our daughters.

My Christ Hospital physician recommended that I meet with Dr. Washam for family counseling. In the beginning, he met with me for several sessions alone, and then he met with the children together. Finally, he was able to persuade my husband to visit with him. After about two months, my husband and I met together with Dr. Washam to talk about our constant fighting and better ways to parent our children. Finally, we have all met together in counseling several times.

I am moved two write this review because Dr. Washam has been extremely effective in helping all of us. Our communication has improved, our anger and fighting has been reduced, and our two children are adjusting and coping in much healthier ways. Dr. Washam is forthright, and while he can be intense at times, his demeanor is caring, sensitive, and nonjudgmental. And, his therapy dog, Riley, is a much added and non-expected bonus which quickly brings a warmth and positive spirit to the overall process.

My husband and I have an 11 year old son -- he is a very good student and a good boy, but lately we have noticed him starting to talk back, be sarcastic, and overall less respectful. We tried different approaches but nothing seemed to work. Our pediatrician unreservedly recommended that we see Dr. Washam, and after just a few short weeks, we're already noticing a tremendous difference in our son's behavior. We've seen Dr. Washam individually, and our son has also seen Dr. Washam individually. So, we've not only learned how to be better parents and how to respond better to our son's behavior, but our son has also had the opportunity to work out some of his issues (that we didn't even know he had). All of this has led to a much healthier family relationship, and quite frankly, we truly feel blessed that we were introduced to Dr. Washam.

After seeing Dr. Washam, it's clear that he is hands down the best therapist in town...and that's exactly the reputation he has. He was recommended to me by several friends and also my physician. His reviews are overwhelmingly positive, and I can see why.

Not only has he helped me and my husband significantly with our marriage, but he has also helped our young son cope with some of the stresses that we have unfortunately put him through. We're starting to feel like a family again, no longer fighting like we once were and we're beginning to really just get along together. Dr. Washam was extremely supportive and helped us see where we were going wrong. Not listening to one another, being selfish, not making enough time for the marriage, and not communicating well. Our son is also much happier now, which has also made my husband and I closer.

While I am just one review of many, I hope that someone else sees this and picks up the phone to the help they need and deserve. There's no better doctor to call than Dr. Washam.

I came across Dr. Washam's name after searching for marriage therapy online. After reading his extensive and impressive reviews from other thankful patients, I knew that he was the right therapist for me. I was so thankful to learn that he was willing to fit me into his busy schedule, and I have seen him now for about two months. He has been a godsend, and I already see a tremendous difference in my life and my overall mood. While there are clearly countless reviews on Dr. Washam, I wanted to nonetheless add my story as I cannot recommend him enough to friends and family.

I went to see Dr. Washam after coming across his name online and reading his many impressive reviews. While I can tell that Dr. Washam is a busy therapist, he was very kind and fit me into his schedule for his Crestview Hills (Northern Kentucky) office. I chose Dr. Washam because he is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and for about six months, I have been struggling immensely with my marriage; things just haven't been clicking anymore. While we still love each other, we have been struggling with finding time for each other with work, work events, friends and a ton of other things getting in the way. Without going into too much detail, Dr. Washam has been a blessing. He has been kind, sensitive, an incredible listener, has offered us valuable advice and has helped us prioritize the many aspects of our life to ensure that we have time for each other. While things do not heal overnight, my husband and I have been getting much closer, and we have no intention of divorcing. We will continue seeing Dr. Washam and look forward to what lies ahead for our marriage.

I have been married for 5 years and have two children, ages 3 and 1. Four months ago, I found out that my wife was having an affair with an old high school boyfriend that she connected with on Facebook. I was extremely angry and had every intention of leaving her, but she persuaded me to work on our marriage, and our family doctor gave us Dr. Washam's name. We have met with him once a week since September and we are making tremendous progress in mending our relationship. Dr. Washam is always sensitive in what he says, but don't be fooled, he can be very direct and at times it is hard to hear or accept what he says. That said, we both needed to be confronted in the ways that we were hurtful to one another, and it is his sincerity and honesty that has made the difference in our growth and improvement.

Dr. Washam, you've saved my life. I don't know how to thank you for all your time and support, but I hope that writing this will bring others who are struggling to your door. You've gone above and beyond what I expected from a therapist. God Bless.

After seeing Dr. Washam for more than three years, I feel qualified to give an accurate review. I was annoyed in the beginning that he wouldn't ask me questions right off the bat about what he was looking for or to prove any hunches. I started all the conversations for our first few meetings and then he would steer to whatever he thought was the most pressing. Now it's a much more subtle back and forth, but the pattern has been the same since the beginning.
He's not a doctor that reads your file, adds it to his first impression, and talks at you until you conform with his diagnosis. Dr. Washam speaks to me and he listens and respond when I reply.
An intelligent man of strong faith, Dr. Washam is well certified to give religious-based advice and counseling, but he's never pushed it on to me. We are both of different faiths and it's never been an issue with my therapy.
At the height of my depression and anxiety, with an attitude problem and general distrust of people, Dr. Washam made a connection with me at 16 that I genuinely believe saved my life.

Recently my Priest in Northern Kentucky asked me to go for a visit with Dr. Washam because I was feeling hopeless, dark, and questioning my faith. The Father knew that Dr. Washam was trained in both psychology and theology, so I said I would go. All I can say today is that after 4 weeks of discussion with Dr. Washam, I feel much more enlightened in my faith and my depression and despair is truly lifting.
