.

My husband and I enjoy clam chowder, enough so that we are considering a US clam chowder sampling tour, so when Des Moine??s ??Juice? magazine did a best soups article including Waterfront Seafood Market clam chowder, we had to try it! That article also alerted us to their Ankeny location which is much more convenient for us.

Having eaten at the Des Moines restaurant and made purchases in the market, we expected high quality seafood. Their website advertises, ??the finest quality fish and seafood available anywhere?.

I was raised in Oregon, a short drive from the coast, so I know fine seafood and excellent calm chowder. I agree that Juice probably picked the best clam chowder in Des Moines, good and clammy, but not the best ??anywhere?. I??ve had better and that would be a chowder with the texture and taste of homemade, not one that appears to be made from a commercial soup base. In any case I would go back for more.

To make a meal we chose two other menu items, Blue Mussels and Seafood Supreme salad.

I can highly recommend the mussels. Very tasty and definitely as good as any I??ve had.

So far so good!

But then came the Seafood Supreme salad. The menu describes it as ??a medley of crab, shrimp and vegetables?, so knowing Waterfront has ??the finest quality fish and seafood available anywhere? we were looking forward to a really good seafood salad. Imagine our surprise, shock and dismay when the first bite revealed what I consider to be a cheap, low quality product - artificially flavored and colored, pressed unidentifiable fish, i.e. imitation ??crab? with an objectional flavor tasting nothing like real crab.

Yuk! If we had known we would not have ordered that salad. If they had described the salad with the word ??krab? we would have chosen something else and likely walked away pleased.

We feel duped! We started wondering what else on the menu and in the market is not what they say it is.

When asked how our meal was, we voiced our displeasure with the salad and the owner who happened to be there at that moment was summoned. His response was only to tell us that he is allowed to call that product crab because it has a tiny percent of crab in it. News to us. He said he was sorry we were unhappy with the salad but that was it. No offer of a refund or coupon for future use.

We thought it was a good place and now we say, BEWARE!
