.

Be careful with your bar / drink plan with Stephen Starr Events. We were promised trained bartenders who would be efficient and skilled. We trusted them to deliver this simple staff position.

Instead, we were provided with an event manager behind the bar who was utterly inept. She looked as if she had never been behind a busy bar in her life. She mixed martinis with too much liquor for a single martini in a shaker, filled the glass then tossed the rest down the sink! The average wait for a drink during our cocktail hour was between 10 to 15 minutes. They had an assistant of sorts but he couldn't do more than make a gin and tonic and other very simple drinks. They were put into a position that was out of their skill level. Some top-shelf alcohol that was requested was missing. And to start it all off, the party started at 7pm and the bar wasn't open until 7:10. I'm paying for the party and can't even get a beer before the party starts??? They billed us for a quantity of drinks that would have had all "drinkers" averaging 6 drinks in 4 hours. That translated to her and her assistant making at least one drink a minute and she was telling people "specialty drinks take 5 minutes to make." And we were billed for 186 of them. You do the math. We are extraordinarily disappointed as the party was a smash except for the delay at the bar. One woman waited 20 minutes for a soda water! Two professional bartenders who were guests called the bar scene "amateur-hour."

Just make sure you get the names of your bartenders BEFORE you have your event. Stephen Starr's restaurants are not big on the bar scene -- very low key except for El Vez on a Friday or Saturday night. Their bartenders are rarely put into overdrive and can get by with a fairly lazy pace. Be very careful with how you contract your drink plan too - if you make changes, read your entire contract because they may modify sections regarding water, juice, soda and other non-alcoholic items elsewhere in the contract. Get details in place early on.

Food was great, staff is professional, friendly and polite, but our bar scene was disappointing. We'll probably end up paying the full tab and regretfully, we will not recommend them to friends.
