We had the 10 course tasting menu with upgrades that are well worth it. Every single course was so delicate and meticulous. The sashimi melted in your mouth while the conch soup (served in a conch shell) warmed you from the inside out. We ordered Uni off the sushi menu, and it is truly the best uni I have had to date. Buttery, creamy, smooth.. How cliche of me to say that it was an orgasm in the mouth.. but there really is no other way to describe it!

Pros: spicy scallop roll

I'm addicted to their spicy scallop sushi. It is one of the few places around that I trust for good sushi.

Very small place tucked away in Old City. Sushi is very good, and the staff is very nice. Not sure of the restaurant's capacity, but pretty sure it can't hold more than 20-25. They have a few tables set up outside when its nice too.

i beg to differ. From when the new owners first opened the restaurant, they have improved dramatically. I've talked to and seen the sushi man at work. I've also had the pleasure of seeing him pick out the fish when the delivery guy came in; he takes his time and makes sure that he picks the freshest fish available, sending the bad ones back asking for new ones. I've been a regular at this restaurant for quite some time now and yes, when the new owners opened, they needed some time to adapt. However, with their new styles, added options on the menu (which are fantastic by the way), and added desserts, this restaurant may be catching up to the previous owner, if not surpassing him. Quote from the sushi man: "WE NEVA USE BAD FEESH!"

Pros: Good food. Fresh. Perfect place for a romantic night out

Cons: A bit small, but the server is only one call away

all the great rating about this small place has dissapeared with previous owners, i was a regular at this place from opening of "UZU" few years back., and I realized that week ago was my last visit to UZU. Freshness of sashimi and portions became small and when ever we ask for o-toro, we been given one with brownish tint and oder of dead fish. What has happened to uzu. If new owner don't shape up and care about customer they have they will be left with a "dud" of a sushi joint.

Pros: easy to get seating

Cons: getting worse by day

.

Prompt seating, good sushi. I can think of a few sushi places that I would rank a bit higher but Uzu is everything you look for in a restaurant. Good food, very fresh. Good service and great location.

Pros: Location

The atmosphere at Uzu is great a bit smaller than some sushi bars I've been to but also less personable than others in the sense of being righ tup on the bar, and the staff is very polite and considerate. This was my first time at this Sushi bar. Which was tonight when I went out on a date, I order the Uzu Regular my date the Philly Roll. The Miso Soup (comes with the UR)was with out question the best I have ever had, and I am not much of a soup person.

The Sushi on the other hand was passable. Being that I read the reviews and that I worked in the back end of the service industry from high school, and through college, I would chalk it up to something being over looked. What made the sushi passable was that it was warm, though this could have been from the plate just being washed cause that was warm too. Like I said overlooked. But my date had no issues with her meal so , I would go here again to make sure that what happened was just that I had an unfortunate experience.

wife and i are foodies..go out to dinner at least 2-3 times/week..had been to morimoto (too pricey -- but great drinks, especially in the lounge), pod (great if your kids want to keep changing the lights in the pod), haru (why is that place still open?), etc.

we were walking by uzu and decided to stop in. And have been hooked ever since - we now go there (or takeout) at least once a week. The chef/owner, Bo, is phenomenal - i have had the most awesome, most diverse varieties of sushi here.

Cost - this place is cheap especially when you consider the quality of food you get. I would say the food here is better than the food at Morimoto - and you pay about half at Uzu as you would at Morimoto. Of course - Morimoto is a much better hang-out and check out the crowd place - but if you want to focus on sushi, go to Uzu. Typically, we pay around $70-80 for 6-7 different things...at morimoto, we were used to shelling out $120!! so the prices at this place are similar to middle-tier sushi places..but the food is high-end.

Place is small -- so good for a groups from 2-6. Not at all good for little kids - since the place is really small. If you want to go in a larger group - then try weeknights after 8:30 (or plan ahead for reservations).

We have now introduced about 20 of our friends/work colleagues to this place - and literally, each one of them has been back at least once!

My recommendation: order a couple things, and then have mimi (the hostess/waitress) ask the chef to make something special for you! And yes - go on a night when you are NOT stressed for time. Since it is a small place, it sometimes takes a little longer for the food to arrive if it is a busy night.

I went with my wife on her birthday and ordered Omakase dinner for $50 per person and had best dinner ever. Chef offered imported suzuki from Japan in ponzu sauce and also sashimi in different sauces amazed our pallets. Five course dinner was just perfect and carried wonderful taste back home, which made us to make reservation for dinner for following saturday. Great experience!

I work a block away from this place so my co-worker and I decided to give it a try for lunch. As stated by others this place is *small*, but since it was empty we didn't really mind. The soup and salad was good and I was really looking forward to my entree (assortment of sushi and maki a la cart)...and waited we did!!! It took over 45 minutes for us to get the food even though we were the only customers in the place!!! Reviews here suggested that there may be a wait, but talk about an understatement. The waitress, apologetically enough, disappeared for 15 minutes at a time and left me wanting better service.

However, once the food arrived all was right again...the spicy tuna roll was excellent, and the scallops are quite possibly the tastiest I've had in this town! Prices aren't that bad either. Honestly, if you have the time for a long wait, I would suggest giving Uzu a try. It is such a waste that I would hesitate going back to a restaurant with such good food. Get the service and wait time right and you'll win a lot more customers!

Based on what I read on citysearch, I decided to put part of my summertime bonus to good use and take my girl for a Friday night date at Uzu. After all, with so many glowing reviews here, I figured it HAD to be excellent. A couple of sourpuss reviews weren't going to scare us away! I made reservations two days in advance for Friday night.

Well, first of all, the place is tiny tiny tiny. When you walk in the door, you feel like you're going to be sitting on the laps of the folks at the front table. We were seated at the the much-maligned "bathroom table," and while we are very patient people, it soon became very annoying to be asked repeatedly by other patrons if "anyone is in there?" and getting bonked on the shoulder by the door to the bathroom getting opened and closed constantly. It was kind of annoying to be continually apprised of everyone's bathroom visits. I will say this much: the bathroom is lovely and clean.

The menu looked diverse, and our appetizers were quite good. And then we ordered main courses... and we waited. And waited. And waited. All told, we waited at least and an hour and change for our sushi without even getting our water glasses re-filled.

When the sushi finally arrived (with apologies from the sweet waitress) it was average quality--not bad, but not excellent... just good. We probably would have eaten live goldfish at that point! We paid (decent prices, but a bit on the highside) and left feeling more stressed from our "nice night out" than before we arrived due to the long wait, tiny room and "bathroom monitor" table. Paying the bill felt a bit like paying a ransom so that we could leave. I was sick of sitting in that chair!

In all fairness, there was only one waitress working, and I know Friday nights are busy nights, but come on... So, overall, we agreed that while Uzu had pretty tasty food, there are better, cheaper, faster, nicer, quieter, less cramped and more convenient places for sushi in Philly.

I love Uzu! I go there almost on a weekly basis. The owners are very nice and treat everyone very well, especially their regulars. The quality of the fish for the price cannot be found anywhere. They are also very good about allowing customers to create their own rolls. I rave about them to everyone. My sister came from Manhattan and although I told her it was amazing, didn't believe me, now she tells everyone that they have to come to Philly and eat at Uzu.

Uzu is the best Sushi in Philadelphia! I have not eaten Sushi anywhere else since the first time I went there (and I eat Sushi 3 times per week and have been to every other sushi restaurant in the city)
They have very creative roles, they always aim to please their customers, and have the best and most friendly service.
The owners are the nicest people and they are dedicated to making sure that everyone feels like a VIP when you dine there.
Not only are the rolls and the sushi the most fresh and most creative in the city, but the Miso Soup and Salad's are also amazing!
Highly Reccomend!!

Sushi fan for over 20 years, had some of the best in Japan, California and NYC, most definitely the best in Philly, and now in my top 5.
Yes, it is a tiny space, and, although it does take longer than one would expect at other restaurants to get your order, the wait is worth it, as the sushi chef takes much care to create every order. The service was excellent, our server was very kind, the presentation and quality top notch, over allexperience A+++

I eat sushi pretty much every day. I wanted to check this place out when I heard they opened, so i finally did. I can tell you now, i will be a regular. Absolutely amazing food. It's a tiny place so it's not good for a group (or more then 2), but definitely worth a visit.

I have eaten at UZU a number of times. It's great for take-out or dine-in .... and I just keep coming back! The sushi is the freshest in Philly and the price can't be beat. The staff is very curteous and friendly. Overall, just an awesome place for sushi, a welcome and needed addition to Old City!

This restaurant is tiny and the service there is horrible. The sushi is really good but when it comes to service they get an F in my book. I went with 4 of my friends and we waited 2 1/2 hours just for sushi and we could not find the waitress anywhere. It also took her 45 minutes to open a 2nd bottle of wine and she commented to us saying "You already drank one bottle. Didnt you drink enough?" I do not think it is necessary for a waitress to comment on how many bottles of wine are drank at a dinner. Overall, the food is good but the service was horrible. I would not suggest going to this restaurant.

I am a self confessed sushi snot, there is nothing i hate more then mediocre sushi and finding great sushi at a reasonable price is definitely a challenge. I consider UZU the best sushi in philly. The restaurant is immaculate, the food is outstanding, the service is personal and the prices are great! Their house salad is a great start to your meal, their list of 'creative rolls' is fantastic (i recommend the firecracker roll), I can't say enough about this place. I don't usually try new sushi restaurants but after reading other reviews i gave this a shot and am so glad i did. I've eaten at a lot of sushi restaurants in philly and overall UZU tops the list. Morimoto is great but i always leave with remorse (was that really worth a hundred + dollars - not to mention the drinks). At uzu we grab a bottle of wine on the way and enjoy a great lunch!

The space is small (which is one thing i love about it) so although i've never needed reservations at lunch i
can see how they would be necessary for dinner.

We walked in last night a few minutes before 7pm. The restaurant was EMPTY and they asked us to sit by the bathroom (where they seated us last time). I politely asked it we could sit elsewhere since the entire restaurant was empty. They said no, that they had reservations for ONE of the other tables at 8pm. I had a so-so feeling about the restaurant the first time I went (bathroom is iffy) but I thought it was a result of our seat. Now, I still have a bad feeling and won't go back. Overall sushi was average and fairly priced. Atmosphere lacking. Much prefer Fuji Mt. or Shiroi Hana.

I do not believe Uzu deserves the bashing of the last post. I too have gone to Uzu probably 2 -3 dozen times in the last few years. True, the old owners were great and we were very friendly with them, but they moved on. There was a learning curve with the new owner, and they have come a long way in the few months since the change. It is still 1 of only 2 places worth eating sushi in the neighborhood. The atmosphere is pleasant, the food is still good (still a more affordable option than many over priced places), and the quality has greatly improved in the last few months. Don't be swayed by a negative review. Its a good spot w good sushi that is byo. Don't forget a bottle of wine, beer, sake....or all three.

This small place will give you the best sushi and rolls for your money, we were stuffed to max for under $50. I had to spend over $40 just by my self at most other sushi joints. Most important thing is their sushi and rolls were better then all of sushi restaurants in Philadelphia. Chef Dung made special that was out of this place and best of it all it was on the house. Uzu is the best place for sushi that i ever experienced.

Uzu by far has the best sushi in Philadelphia. I have eaten in over 100 sushi restaurants in the area and although Uzu is a quaint small restaurant they excel in what counts most, fresh fish. Not only is the sushi tasty but portions are large and the staff is most curtious. Uzu also provides a great place for a date. Since the restaurant only holds about 20 the staff is able to give special care to each and every patron.
