Balafas Welding, aka Balafas & Son's Welding is a family owned and operated business located on the north side of the very busy merge of 25A and 347 in Mount Sinai. The business started, at that location, circa 1930 by Patriarch Angelo Balafas, his wife Irene and their sons; Peter, James and Leonard.

Sadly, this landmark business has closed their doors forever and they will greatly be missed by the surrounding communities. Balafas Welding has been associated with many construction landmarks in neighboring towns. If you have driven on and off the ferry in Port Jefferson, then the ramp you drove across was built by them. Peter has also performed emergency repairs on the old ferry Catskill and the newer Grand Republic. Our association with the Bridgeport-Port Jefferson Ferry company has lasted for decades. The PJYC / harbor beacon in the parking lot near the entrance and many fireescapes and handrails were handcrafted and by installed by them. The local sand and gravel companies were also regular customers as their hoppers and other equipments required repair often due to heavy use. While Peter performed most of the field work, including seasonal "water defrosting" on the island during the 1970's. Peter was a pioneer in the field of unfreezing shallow water lines from the city mains to the house, and even sometimes city mains themselves. While Peter was mobile field service, his younger brother James stayed local in the shop and was the friendly face that installed snowplows on trucks, repaired heavy equipment and hand crafted wrought iron pieces of art, most often plant-pot holders that were made for his loving mom, Irene. James passed away in September 2008, and is layed to rest with his parents in Washington Memorial Park. The Business is closed, property is being sold and developed into professional offices and shopping center. - Thanks for your support and loyalty over the years. Regards, Stan Balafas, USN Ret. (now living in California)
