There is no library on earth like the East Hampton Library. The childrens wing is phenomenal, and the gardens are beautiful. The movie screen is gigantic, and lecture hall is very big. The staff is a great help all the time. A+++++++

As with any library, there is much to be grateful for in this library. You have to be able to find a parking space, first. In addition, many volumes are so ancient that they have age spots and other gunk on them. The basement where most of the nonfiction volumes are located is spooky especially if you are the only one there. It also smells a little funky. Most of the volumes seem ancient so the new scientific discoveries, for instance, have probably been replaced with others that you need to learn about elsewhere.

The staff ranges from looking sleepy to ... There is Wi-Fi and lots of nooks to hide in. But those noisy lap-top people and tutors make you want to keep moving. It appears to be a place where people hang out to get out of the elements, too.

The children's room looks huge especially since there are hardly any youngsters there whenever we have used it or looked in. It is very cheerful looking and inviting so the lack of kids is puzzling. We've been told that most families with kids live too far away to walk or bike to the library and with traffic and parking problems it's not easily accessible. However, it is also one place where the staff seems energized, glad to see you and helpful without being obtrusive.

You would also be hard put to realize that this library is in a large artists community; that almost everyone who waits on you anywhere is a native Spanish-speaking person; that although it has a "Long Island Collection" room, there is no effort to share the democratic ideals some early settlers in the community and many following them initiated and promulgated, etc., etc., etc. In other words, it seems to be disconnected from its roots and its current community. Once inside, you could almost be anywhere.

Don't let the small outside of East Hampton Library fool you. The inside is absolutely ENORMOUS! There are so many wings to this library, I'm surprised it doesn't just take off and fly. Computers with internet access are located all over the library, not in any one room. The children's section is huge and has a terrific librarian. The reference section is amazing, and a little overwhelming. There is something for everyone at this library.

It is located right near the center of town, too, which is terrific. You can spend a lot of time at the library, then go shopping or get something to eat. It is wonderful!

PROS: oodles and oodles of books and other materials, HUGE, great programs
CONS: Can be a little overwhelming
