I am not someone who is good with words but let me tell you 'bout this place, Calypsos. "So there's a new greek restaurant on 27th Ave, want to go try it for dinner tonight?", That's what a friend of mine asked me Friday night. Me loving Greek food I said, "sure, why not!" Being the new guy on the block I expected the place to be lacking business, well I couldn't have been more wrong. If I am correct there were only two tables open to sit at when we arrived and people were still coming in after we say down. Busy, just what a new restaurant wants to be! We were promptly greeted by the owner of the restaurant and he was quik to seet us and get us our beverages. I was hoping for a glass of wine but, they do not serve alcohol yet, wasn't too disappointed, just wanted some good food. The server, (gosh I can't remember her name, I think it starts with an "A"), was very attentive and did a spectacular job with the table side, "Flamming Cheese" Saganaki! We ordered Hummus, Falafel and Chicken Slovoki, (Kabobs) with Green Beans and Artichokes. The food, taste and presentation, was fabulous. The Falafel was the best I've had since I was visited my friends restaurant in Chicago, and my friend truely enjoyed the lemon in the artichokes. I loved the presentation of the plates as they came, the lemon zest made my day on the artichokes! I was very pleased with the artwork, by local artists, that's nice to see. The atmosphere was relaxed and romantic so much so that I could bring a date here. I have to say, I will be going back to try something new. If everything is as tasty as the dishes we had, I have a feeling I may have a new favorite Greek restaurant, Calypsos!! Good luck to them.

My son and I were going to go to Midoris right next door for sushi ...a place we covet- but thought on a whim we would try Calypso- the kid loves lamb.
It was dead- but didn't take that as a bad sign. The server was a friendly young man (and pretty much is the best thing we experienced). The food was mediocre- although I loved the calamari- too bad it was sad to see it drowning in its cooking liquid. I had Garithes Santorini- sauteed shrimp finished in a herbed white wine sauce- it was ok...but had a ton of Lemon zest and needed salt. My son had a lamb dish he enjoyed- and he has pretty good taste- so I will give them that - but there was so much parsley garnish on and around the outside of the plate it looked like someone was cutting weeds on the line..

I realize that this is a new establishment- which is why I feel a modicum of professionalism makes or breaks a new restaurant. To give you a basis for my opinion-I work as a associate chef instructor at a Twin Cities culinary school and my experience is ethnic food, as well as my BA degree pursuit in Food Anthropology. I live for ethnic cuisine. Greek and Moroccan being 2 of my favorites.
I was pretty resigned to having a o.k. food experience - thinking I might possibly dine again...until I had to listen to the cook shouting a conversation from the kitchen to friends having dessert at the counter. I would expect this at a place like the Hard Times- ( It doesn't happen there very often though.) But my 11 year old and I were paying 70$ with the tip for one App, and our 2 Dinners- and soda. ( NO ALCOHOL SERVED) and It honestly sucked , and didn't stop sucking until we left.
The cost did not reflect the quality or the atmosphere- if your friends with the cook -go hang out there ,other wise your better off eating at Christos or getting your Hummus from the Seward CO-OP.

Our family decided to check out this new Greek restaurant in our neighborhood. I am so glad we did. Although our family eats out for convenience, we'd just about given up on the concept that the food we got would actually taste good. These days, everything is prepackage and pre-prepared. We are also a bit of misers. We're not quite willing to spend $20 on dinner. But we also don't wish to spend even moderate prices on substandard food. Calypso is the restaurant for us! The ingredients were obviously top notch. The feta was as creamy as butter. The olives made me purr when I ate them. The herbs and seasonings were fresh, pungent and sharp (in a good way) in flavor. Every bite had flavor. This was a meal that made me want to eat slowly and savor every bite. Three of our meals were off the lunch menu and were close to $7 each. I almost hated to tell the owner that I thought that was underpriced for the freshness of the ingredients but it was the best deal in restaurant fare as I have had in a long time. (The meals included a side dish.) I've paid almost as much as that for a wrapped premade tuna sandwich at a coffee shop and that didn't come with a side dish. The dinner menus are more expensive but not much more expensive then we recently paid at a famous national restaurant chain recently. The food there was so mediocre, poorly cooked and tasteless that none of us bothered with a doggy bag. I would gladly pay a few dollars more for food like this. South Minneapolis needs a restaurant like this and I hope they can prosper in this location with these very affordable prices.

One last thing to consider: I am trying to monitor my cholesteral. The dishes are all prepared with olive oil which is a heart healthy fat. By chosing carefully, one can enjoy a highly flavorful meal without ingesting a lot of harmful fats.

Executive summary: Served a wide range of mouth-watering Greek specialties, most with a twist. The decor and ambiance were great! Compared with other restaurants in this area, it was a bit expensive. Those who could afford it came back very often, but that wasn't many people.

The whole story: My wife and I had been waiting several months for "Casa de Samuel" to open, replacing another Mexican place that used to sit in this location. We waited, seeing folks hard at work remodeling the inside...but then one day they were gone. A while later, the lights were back on, and we saw people inside at the tables. We decided to come back a few days later and try it, noting the "Greek Restaurant Opening Soon" sign up on the door. A bit of an odd name for a Greek place, we thought, "Casa de Samuel," but hey, you don't eat the name! (If you think Calypso a strange name for a Greek restaurant, look it up!) We saw people sitting at the tables, pulled on the door, and in we went! We stood there for a short while, taking in the decor and really loving what they'd done with the place, when a young lady got up from one of the tables and somewhat sheepishly informed us that they were not actually open, yet...they were doing a practice run for their imminent debut. She explained that Samuel and his family had been deported before they could open their restaurant, and the new owners hadn't gotten a Calypso sign yet.

We were debating other dinner options when the young lady returned, and offered to host us as her guests. We took her up on it, and were delighted we did! We got a "sneak tasting" of the wonderful menu, and met the executive chef, manager, and owner.

The hummus was the best we've ever had, with a strong garlic kick. We can also strongly recommend the skordalia, lamb fricasse, and lemon chicken. Nothing was less than amazing!

Cons: A bit on the expensive side for we locals; worth a long trip for those who can afford it! Tight street parking only - take light rail!
