Dear Retired Vetrinarian, my friend who has owned dogs and cats for over 40 years (all live together and got along well with each other) went to the Kitsap Humane Society to provide a home to a dog and a kitten. The HSof Kitsap expected my friend to bring her 14 year old dog into the shelter for a "meet and greet" to see if they liked the way the dogs interacted. All her animals have come from there over the 30 years she has been here and they insisted upon the meeting. Max is living his last days of his life and they expected her to bring him in! One visit will not tell how these animals will get along! needless to say my friend walked out without saving any shelter animals. It was not acceptable that she has owned, loved, and cared for all her animals until the last days of their lives. The 14 year old lab was adopted from KHS when he was a 9 week old puppy. She called me and told me her estate will not include KHS as she is having it changed. Such a shame they treated an old customer this way. KHS sounds like a big mess to me. They really do not treat people very well there and are poor judges of people as well. I guess I will not go there either after learning of how they treat people who are trying to take in unwanted animals. Thank Goodness there are other places to get pets. Now I understand why people buy animals from the newspaper...or elsewhere...when shelters treat people so poorly it is a shame. Kitsap lost a lot of money...my friend is a great animal lover and had a fair amount of money put aside for them in her estate plan.

Once was a very good organization; now I am not confident that once was a thriving shelter and wonderfully supported organization is that no longer?

When I visited there I noticed when i went into the puppy area that the puppies were in there individual units standing on the metal fencing that they have underneath their paws. The holes in the fencing below them were so big that the puppies paws were falling into the squares of the fencing. They had no blankets and the puppies were by themselves. They were about 6-7 weeks old and were just trembling. I asked the front desk if they could put a blanket underneath them so their little paws wouldn't keep on slipping and they said it was none of my business that they were fine. Another gentleman went up to the front and also agreed with me and they said that they know how to take care of animal and not to worry. I am a retired veterinarian and I have neer been treated like that in my life. Once they found out that I was a retired veterinarian they then changed their attitude. I went back 3 hours later and it still had not been taken care of. I feel sorry for the animals at the Kitsap Humane Society. I know that one voice isn't going to make a difference but I hope that anyone who witnesses these actions, please say something so that we can change this. Thank you, Retired Dr. Murray Atkinson

The staff at the Kitsap Humane Society was very friendly. My intention was just to browse, and they were very nonpushy. They gave me information about choosing the right pet, what things you will need to keep in mind, and what kinds of problems you might run into. They were very professional and very well trained.

Great place to adopt a pet. The staff is kind and courteous. They keep the kennels clean and take great care of the animals there. The volunteers make the environment a fun and friendly place.

The Kitsap Humane Society is a great way to adopt a new family member or maybe give an animal to if you are not the right owner for it. The workers are very helpful and thoughtful, they do not push you to adopt any animal. They take great care of the animals that are there and help you handle any animal that you are interested in. I recmommend this humane society because they really do take care of the animals and help to find them a new home.
