I recommend VECC without any reservations whatsoever. I have known the owner, Dr. Lee Garrod, for many years now and have relied greatly on her skill as an excellent diagnostician. There have been times when I have had to take one of my dogs to VECC at 1 or 2 a.m. and have been greeted with professionalism, warmth and caring by whoever was on duty at the time. Dr. Garrod has only the finest vets and vet techs and support staff, she does not tolerate mediocrity. My vet in Berwick, Maine (Brion Reagor, Lucky Pet Animal Hospital) told me today that he would never hesitate to refer his clients to VECC, he holds Dr. Garrod and her staff in high esteem.

As a customer service agent myself, I can tell you that the staff at this facility are top notch and I have been to many vets in my lifetime but never had such a wonderful experience as this weekend. They are professional and caring and I can see that they work together as a team. They were as worried about me as my dog and took every bit of time to answer my questions thoroughly - despite how busy they were!!
Thank you to Dr. Winn and the nurses. TBone is back to himself this morning and begging for breakfast as usual. He wouldn't be here without you. He and I are honored to have met your staff.

My girl Kelsey is a cushoid diabetic in chronic renal failure and was given a death sentence by our prior vet almost 2 years ago at the age of 12. Thanks to the expertise of the docters and all of the assisting staff she turned 14 three weeks ago. She is a very complicated case but the specialists and everyone at VECC has been so patient with both of us! We had to see the neurologist here too and we spent a week there 4 months ago and I was so very impressed at the level of care they provided to my Kelsey and how accommodating they were to me the overwrought Mom. Dr. Jessica Morgan, Kelsey's internist, (and the neurologist) have given us many more good days together and she has provided care for Kelsey that can be surpassed by none. I highly recommend this clinic and the specialsits here. I am 3 hours away from them in Maine but they have worked diligently with me at home and with my local veterinarian. We love you all.
Anna and Kelsey!

I have many dogs and fortunately never had to seek emergency care until last weekend and on a long weekend! One of our dogs was fainting. The place was super busy but they got us in right away. He needed an ultrasound of his heart and they called one of their specialsts who came in immediately! She was very thorough, obviously super intelligent and really very nice. My experience there was above and beyond positive. I feel the prices were reasonable and they went over all of our options for care. Brewser is fine today because ot this hospital and the attention to detail, expertise and caring. \r
\r
I have just talked with one of my breeder friends and it turns out she has been there before too. She cannot say enough good things too about the care her dog received there. It is nice to know that I went to the best place around. \r

What a terrific facility. It is great to know they are there. We are from out of town and this clinic is nothing like what we have in NC. Our dog swallowed a fishing hook and about 3 feet of line. They called in one of their specialists who was able to remove it all with a fiberoptic scope and he did not have to have surgery. Really top notch place and the staff were all very professional and wonderful.
I am very impressed.

I am usually so hesitant to use anyone but my vet but when my vet recommended I take our dog here, now I know why. This is a superb facility and the treatment we got was so caring. We are seeing one of their specialists tomorrow agin and it is so wonderful to know that they are there. I have never seen such a warm environment with the knowledgable and dedicated people in the same place! I will definitely keep you posted.

On New Year's Eve we had to bring in our 14 week old puppy who had become very sick. They were very quick to see him and took xrays. They said he would most likely need surgery and gave an estimate of 2700-3200$. They wanted 75% up front, we didn't have that available to us, so we had to go with the other option of hydrating him and giving him pain meds to see if a possible blockage would pass on it's own, so we agreed to that for over 700$. We were called in the middle of the night and told they believed there was a problem with his intestines that required surgery, the sooner the better, but would not perform it until we came up with the money at 1 am on a hoilday. I was pretty disappointed that they would make him wait til we could transfer some money around. We got them the necessary deposit at 7am, and from there on the care was amazing, I couldn't have been happier. They called to let us know when he was out of surgery and how it went, when we called to check on him they were very happy to talk to us and answer any questions we had, even in the middle of the night. When we went to visit him, they brought us into a cozy visiting room and promptly brought us our baby. When it was time to pick him up, he seemed to really like the Dr. who went over everythign with us, he was so excited whenshe came in he peed on her pant leg, and she didn't even blink about it. When walking out a nurse saw him leaving and came to give him a kiss good bye, and his tail was going a mile a minute, a little less than 24 hours after major stomach surgery no less. I left feeling he was very well cared for and I did the best for him I could have. The night we left him they even let me carry him to the back where he would be staying and we could see the set up and knew he'd be well cared for in the clean establishment. We were so happy to see he was going to be right there in front of everyone, not in a back room alone. We were very disappointed they basically wouldn't help him until they were paid, and I think that's something they need to find a solution to, I know they need to be paid, and I am not upset about the fees, just wish they would help him while we were getting the money together instead of making him wait, I understand their are people who will then not pay, but I'd like to think that % of the population is small, and wish they'd take a chance to work with us to get the animals the help they need asap. However overall I was very pleased in every other way, I don't like the money first policy, but never felt they were trying to get the most out of me, and in fact the bill came in 500 less than the low end of the quote, you could have picked my jaw up off of the ground, that has never happened to me before! I would recommend this place to anyone, over any other animal ER I have ever been to, I just wish it were closer to home so I could use them whenever I need to, we were out of town for the holiday weekend.

A month ago my 11 yr old lab mix had a thymoma removed. This was a major operation which involved a 3 day stay, 24 hr care, bloodwork, xrays, ultrasounds, etc... I was originally given a diagnosis of lymphoma by my previous vet. I went to a new vet (Dr. Magnusson of canobie vet in windham nh) ad she referred me to Dr. Garrod for a second opionion. Dr. Garrod was able to biopsy the mass in my dog's chest and diagnose him with a removable lymphoma. Had I not found Dr. Garrod I would not have known what was wrong and my dog would have been left untreated and would have died. I cannot begin to thank her enough for that. From the moment I walked through the doors I felt very at ease. My dog was also comfortable at this hospital. I was given straightforward answers and was encouraged to call and ask questions. I never felt pressured to make decisions or to spend extra money. I was called at least once daily and was always helped promptly when I would call there. I would recommend this clinic to anyone. All of the vets, techs, reception area, everyone was wonderful, caring and I felt they truly are in this field for the right reasons. Thank-you all for restoring my faith in the veterinary field.

Emergency Veterinary Clinic is amazing!!! My lab mix came down with a bizarre illness last winter. He was constantly throwing up and there was blood mixing in with his stool. My husband and I took him to another 24 hour clinic in the seacoast, as it was after our normal vet's hours, and they stated that he needed x-rays (which were "inconclusive") and put him on an IV for an hour to rehydrate. They recommended that we take him to see our normal vet the next day. The next morning (after I was up all night with our 2 year old dog who threw up constantly) he had pure bloody diarrhea. We took him into his normal vet (Brentwood Country Animal Hospital...who are also amazing). They kept him on IV's all day and ran tests...they called in the afternoon to see if we would be ok transporting him to the Emergency Veterinary Clinic in Portsmouth to have an ultrasound. Our dog is our baby so we absolutely were ok with this. The Dr's at the clinic were so amazing and compassionate and they took the time to explain everything to us. Our dog had contracted a bacterial infection...most likely from the kennel in Durham that he had been in a few days before...and that he will NEVER go to again. He was kept for 3 nights on IV fluids and we were allowed to visit daily. Each day a vet would call to detail progress and procedures. NEVER were we made to feel this was about money or asked for payment up front. The total bill for 3 nights came to right around $1700 which was very reasonable for around the clock care and all of the testing, x-rays, and ultrasounds that were done...as well as the wonderful and attentive staff. We called quite a bit and we were never made to feel like it was a hassle to talk to us. The staff is so great and I would recommend them without reservation. For the people complaining about money...this is a business and it costs money to run. They cannot cure your pet for free as these tests are expensive. If you cannot afford the payment I would recommend investing in pet insurance so that you may get reimbursed for a portion of the bill. There will never be government run health programs for pets.

We recently spent time at the EVC with our cat over the course of a week as he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. In the end, we lost him, and it was one of the hardest days of our lives. His loss is not a reflection on EVC--pancreatic cancer (feline, canine, or human) unfortunately is terminal in somewhere over 90% of all diagnosed cases. Over the course of the week we had the opportunity to meet many of the staff, and they were without exception immensely caring--both for our cat, and for us.

It was expensive--over three thousand dollars expensive when all was said and done. We were provided detailed estimates for all suggested diagnosis and treatment plans and were never pushed to do treatment we were unwilling to do.

24-hour care is costly, as are the ultrasound and other diagnostic services such as pathology reporting. It is unfortunate, though understandable, that some express the sentiment that EVC is money-centric. When presented with the first of several estimates, our initial reaction was similar in that we wondered why the vet was going over billing with us while our pet's health was our priority. In retrospect, I realize that EVC does their best to provide customers with these estimates to avoid surprises later. When we left, we had a balance nearing $1100.00 and our cat was gone--I have little doubt that EVC policies reflect the temptation to leave without settling accounts, or to leave an animal in trouble without returning...

That said, for those still concerned that the staff is uncaring, I can tell you that they treated our cat lovingly. Several of the vets helped us as we had to confront the choice to put our family pet to sleep. We were allowed to visit him at any time--sometimes in his cage for a brief lunchtime visit, sometimes in a private room when we had time to stay. The staff shared our grief, crying with us at times. Bonnie, one of several vet-techs we met, sent us a care package after we lost him including clay paw-prints, a bow of fur, and an incredibly thoughtful card, all of which she did on her own, out of kindness.

We would not hesitate to return when we have another pet.

I am so impressed. I am extremely impressed with the compassion extended me by the staff at this hospital. They went above and beyond what I would have expected and they walked me through the approach for our beloved sheltie and openly discussed many options. I am leary about emergency clinics and pricing but not at this hospital. I highly recommend this hospital to anyone who sees their pet as a family member. Thank you to all the staff for saving Kasper's life and giving us such peace of mind.

the care given to our sick dog was top notch. We were told by the vet who almost killed our dog that nothing could be done- she couldn't have been more wrong. E.V.C. saved our dogs life and we found out that the actions of the previous vet actually caused the liver failure and other problems that occurred with our otherwise healthy dog! We enjoyed a number of very healthy years with our pet after those life saving visits. NEVER did I feel that I was being nickle and dimed for money- quite the opposite. The original vet was clearly in it for the money, at EVC they are in it for the health of the pet.

Have gone to this E/R for several years for my cats. This New Year's eve freezing snow had a sick kitten and am thankful the wonderful staff was there.Yes, we had to wait about 45 minutes but am sure if my animal were bleeding or in acute distress this wouldn't have been the case. The vet was amazing, up to date and discussed the approach to take, an aggressive one.She changed my cats medications that my vet had prescribed upgrading them. The staff was great also, caring and helpful. My bill was about $350.00 which included fluids and x-rays and medications and exams which would be comparable to what I'd pay at my vet.I have never had a bad experience there nor bills that have exceeded what I paid this night.

I was very disapointed in the policy of not treating an animal till payment had been made. I brought my dog in Saturday. He was seen promptly and I was told he was dehydrated and needed stomach surgery to remove an obstruction. However I wasn't able to write the $1200 check on the spot and numerous attempts to pay by other means were declined. I did finally apply and was approved for Care Credit, but what would they do for an animal who's owner could not financially cover the expence. I know there are irresponsible pet owners out there, however I would like to believe that most of us are doing the best and putting our pets first. It concerns me that people trying to take care of thier animals would be turned away for thier inability to pay. Is there some sort of Vet Hippocratic Oath? It is an Emergency room and it's an emergency for the pet and the owners. We all don't have thousands of dollars sitting around.
On the bright side I found the Doctors and Tech's amazing. They took expert care of my dog and I felt comforted that he was there with people who cared about him and his well being. I didn't feel like they were looking for reasons to charge me money.
I only wish they were as concerned with the dogs well being that payment plans were available!

I had to go to the emergency clinic, my cat having been caught by a wild animal at night.
This place is looking great and it looks like they want to get their money back very quickly at the detriment of the pet owners. They are more successful at printing quickly their estimates than to take care of your pet. My cat had to wait one hour before to have been examined and they were discussing the bill with me before to take care of anything else, (the bill was over $1000 for spending the night) and they proposed to cut it down when I said I would go to my regular vet. in the morning. left my cat there for the night because she needed an IV and when my daughter called the vet in the morning from out of town to get infos about the cat's health they told her how bad I was to let the cat wait for so long... (the bill was $450 for the night)
Took the cat to my vet who operated her for a quarter of the price they requested....
Two weeks later I had to go there with one of my dogs who cut his paw, had to wait 2 hours before they took us, examined the heart beat of the dog ($40) put a bandage on the foot without cleaning it !
($40) charged for emergency visit( $28) and other costs.
My bill was $125 ! for nothing, I complained saying the dog paw was not even cleaned, They asked for the dog back who was already in my car, cleaned his paw in the back room, heard him screaming loud which is unusual, my dog being very brave. They told me he needed stitches, did not even want to wait for the estimate and left.
Went to my regular vet, he got the stitches done(10) under anesthesia and i paid only $250, went to next visit and she stapled his foot in front of me, he did not even move or screamed. I wonder what kind of people are working at that emergency place ?? Hope that everybody will report them.

My friend and I rescued some stray and one was a pregnant calico. We took her to this clinic in the middle of the night to be examined. The staff was amazing, especially the vet assistant who heaped tons of TLC on Cali. Although the cat's fur was dubious looking and falling out in clumps, and the cat was sneezing, this did not deter this young lady.

We were thoroughly impressed with the care Cali received from all of the staff at this clinic. I have since run off the directions to this clinic for future reference in the case of an emergency with one of my own cats.

Whoever says that all they want is money is out of their MIND! My dog was there for 5 days. They even let me stay overnight with them and they bought me food. I mean me! They did not even have to. They treated him so well I don't even want to go back to my regular veterinarian. And I KNOW for a fact that they are NOT about money. They were treating a cat who could not urinate because of stones and the owner had no money. They treated this cat and hospitalized him and even helped the ower find a veterinarian who would take them on as a a client. You have no idea how much it must cost to keep a place open 24 hours a day with such WONDERFUL staff!!!

i took my ferret there because he was really week and dehydrated. they told me that it would be $800 to run tests on him and they gave me no hope for recovery after about 15 min i decided to hand over the money and hope for they best before even leaving they came out and said that they needed to put him on air or whatever they call it because he was no longer breathing on his own very well and that would bring the bill up to $1300 i decided that i couldn't afford it all so i told them that i wanted to just take him home. that's when the vet came out and told me that i was being inhumane to not put him down. this made me furious, i had just asked them if he was in pain and they told me no the vet also told me that in the time that we did spend there they were able to get a test done and that his red blood count was down to 10 when it was spoused to be 30 that he won't make it thought the night and again i was being inhumane for not putting him down. since i believe that you only put and animal down if there in pain i was furious and left. they told me it would cost me $15 to put the money back on my credit card or they could just mail me a check in a few days. i told them to mail it. i went to the store and got some pedialyte electrolyte drink mixed it with his normal food in the blender and squirted it into his mouth with a baby's syringe my ferret went from not being able to pick his head up to running around like he always did in a matter of 4 days. he's fine now no thanks to the emergency vet clinic of the seacoast. and no i still haven't see my money back and it's been a week and a half.

The purpose of the EVC is for emergencies, hence the title. I work for a Hospital in the surrounding area, and the EVC is a life saver, LITTERALLY! We have a lot of clients the go their for their after hours emergencies and they always help everyone, never turning anyone away. They are caring and spend 24/7 working to save lives. We always highley recommend them. They might cost more, but its because they are providing more services, with 24/7 care, you cannot find that in many vets. You can never know the care that goes into saving a pets life, and I can assure you that everyone in the vet industry care about your pets, that is why we all came into this industry. Please understand that. Thank you to the EVC for being fabulous!!!

My dog had to stay at the clinic for 2 days/nights after surgery at my own Vets to remove his spleen. They were wonderful with him. They had to monitor him for heart issues as well as infection constantly (per my own Vet's instructions). The two night stay was around $600 but he had 24 hour care - it would probably have cost more at my Vet if he provided that amount of service.
My dog is now being treated for cancer at the Clinic. We decided to go there because they were so good with my dog and because they are connected to a worldwide cancer research group. What we like about them is that they gave us a thorough overview of the treatments, costs, side affectsand possible outcomes etc before we started.

THE ONLY THING THIS PLACE CARES ABOUT IS GETTING AS MUCH MONEY AS THEY CAN FROM YOU.THEY WILL RUN EVERY TEST THEY CAN IF YOU WILL PAY.I have talked to several
people at work and they all said they have heard the same thing.I don"t see how they can get away with it.I will never go back to that over priced hole in the wall.I wish more people would talk about how bad this place is.Money first Animals second.
