I went Sharaku last Wednesday and happened to be there on the last day of $1 Sushi campaign. So much great Sushi but I got such a small bill !
I looked around and everybody there seemed to have Sushi parties looking happy.
I wish they would do that every day!

We have gone here numerous times in the past but only in recent years The atmosphere is pretty casual but works well for dates or groups. I like how you get a nice cut of sushi and a delicious rice that is where you are getting your money's worth. You will feel you are getting fresh Sushi at a reasonable price. I'd recommend it for the quality and the good pricing.

Whenever comes to sushi, Sharaku is my only choice. I started my sushi with Sharaku more than 10 years ago from a second floor place to a street level restaurent. The place is spacious and the food is so superb as well as the chefs and waitresses. Come taste it.

Pros: Cheap but good food

Have been here for a long time. Premises are clean. There are two stories and nice view from second floor dinning room. Servers are always polite and pleasant .
Portions are generous, prices are good and food quality rivals any other sushi place in neighborhood . To get better sushi, you'll have to go to one of those fancy places and expect to spend your paycheck in one sitting. This is one of her favorite places for roll sushi. Their spicy tuna sushi is the Best!

I had never heard of this place before until I recently went with a friend. Though It was Monday night, it was pretty busy. The sushi plate called Village jumbo sushi was HUGE, Had a Roll combo that came with three vegetable rolls. The waiters were ( not Japanese ) were friendly and gave us such a great service. All in all, would definitely go back for cheap eats.

Sharaku offers affordable Japanese food for the poor students in New York.
Monday Night Special is really a good deal.
You can have some sushi and a half portion of noodle dish.
My favorite is " Chicken Sharaku", I am so addicted to it !

Pros: Price, Location, Service

Sharaku easily takes my vote as the best Sushi in East Village, not an easy feat considering there are many competing restaurants in the area. The dishes are large and plentiful and the prices are cheap.
The ambiance is much nicer than other sushi places at competitive prices. The restaurant is very clean as well. Try out Sharaku, you'll be coming back for more! the donburi and udon they serve are tasty and very filling.

Execited to eat at Sharaku every single time. Great food quality with genuinely friendly service. And if you take that quality into account, the prices are affordable and cheaper than many others in Manhattan. They have the best spicy tuna ever!

I love this place. I've been dining at Sharaku for over a decade, just straight up fresh sushi. Portions are generous and prices are more than fair. Sharaku also accomodates those planning to eat in. The service is fairly ordinary although food usually arrives relatively quickly. Big on ambience and if you want some straight up terrific sushi or teriyaki this is the place. Very moderately priced as well.

"Sharaku is undeniably the finest Sushi in New York. Staff greets everyone with a smile and Sushi chefs behind the sushi bar cutting up the freshest fish in the world. Sharaku is a dinner place with great atmosphere and a staff of servers second to none. Also great East Village location for lunch. Great sushi and wonderful service. Shraku restaurant is SIMPLY THE BEST!"

My experience at Sharaku was pretty good. The service is impeccable, we were greeted by a nice waitress. She kept coming by to check if i wanted more Green Tea. The place was packed indeed, may be the reason why it took longer than expected for my food to come out. I am thinking of re-visiting with more friends later.

Prices are great. Will contine to eat here whenever in the neighbourood

Great sushi ! They also have Shabu shabu and large bowls of savory noodle dishes are available as well from their hot dish menu, I always get the house salad and they have the best spicy tuna rolls ever! I love their fresh sushi and don't miss out on their cold sake selection. The service is excellent.

I love this place. I first discovered this place while walking down Washington Square Park to East Village . My sister and I decided to try this place out. Our experience at Sharakui was pretty good. . Waiter kept coming by to check if we wanted more Green Tea. Well you know that it's 2009 coming in less than a month and I'm still dining at Sharaku after so many years. The truth is in the quality and the servings of the food and the price helps also. My family takes in at least one meal per month but I sneak in a couple of single bar dinings now and then.
The service is right on. They treat me like their old friend.

I was wandering around St.Mark's with my friend, and suddenly had a craving for some Japanese food so we went in to this Japanese restaurant. Despite the fact that it was weekday, the restaurant was quite busy.

As we walked in, we were greeted in Japanese (don't know exactly what they were saying but it probably was "welcome" in Japanese..) and were seated by the glass-window area. It was nice, seeing cars and people passing by.

Our waiter came to us and took orders for drinks, and we ordered a hot sake and some tea and water. After we got our drinks, we placed our order. I was surprised that most of the items in the menu were quite inexpensive compared to many Japanese Restaurants in NYC. I had the Sushi Deluxe, and my friend had a special dinner set (I think it was called prix fixe something...) with chicken teriyaki and salmon steak.

Now, when it comes to food, I am very picky. But surprisingly, there was nothing really to be picky about this restaurant's food. Everything was quite nice. The salad that came with the meals were good, especially the dressing!! Our waiter told us that it was carrot-ginger dressing and it was really really good. The sushi was fresh and my friend's dinner set tasted really good as well.

And the service was quite nice, too. The wait staff seemed to be very attentive, refilling water and tea whenever it gets low. They made sure that we were enjoying our meal.

One more thing that was great about this place is their green tea ice cream. After the meal, my friend and I had the green tea ice cream, and omg it was sooooo good. It was the best green tea ice cream i've had so far.

I would definitely recommend this place to my friends and family, and would drop by again when I'm around St.Mark's area.

Pros: Fresh and tasty food, attentive wait staff. Easy on the wallet.

Cons: It was kind of warm (a little bit too warm) inside of the restaurant.

I went to this restaurant the other night with a few friends and had some sushi -- it was probably the worst sushi I've had in the city (not "ineddible" but definitely sub par). The staff was kind of mopey and unattentive -- but the worst part was after I paid for my bill one of the waiters had the nerve to come up to me and say that I didn't tip him enough and that there is a tip minimum -- if there is a minimum -- incorporate it in the check and make it clear on the menu. Either the waiter lied to me, to get a better tip or the managment is fully aware of this policy but is not making it clear to its customers -- I can't decide which is worse and more deceiving.

Won't go back here ever again, and would not recommend the place to my worst enemy.

Sharaku's one of my favorite spots. It always has really good sushi for CHEAP and a fun
We were there last night and we found it was their $1.00 sushi night !!
Couldn't be happier about this discount for those normally cost $2.00 to $3.00. We ordered tons of sushi but only cost us less than $20 each. last night, outside was freaking cold but busy environment and their hot sake kept us warm.
They said $1 sushi day will continue two more days. we will definitely come back for these great sushi.
it will not have to be $1.00 sushi night "next time.

I had a lunch at Sharaku. I ordered their lunch specials, chicken and
my husband did Sushi Lunch but the service was atrocious. We waited about 15 minute but our food didn't come. We wanted to talk to our but he never came back to our table.
After 20 minute, the server brought our food without a word. My chicken was cold and dry. We paid by a credit card but he found he gave us a wong check he had take our card twice. it kept us another 15 minute. It is obvious that they need to do something to improve their service.

A week ago, I went to Sharaku and heard about their "One Dollar Sushi Day".
They said they do this once a while to show appreciation to their patrons.
Their sushi is always fresh and their regular menu isn't pricey at all. , I called my friends and had a little sushi party there.
I had almost same sashimi choice I had last time I was there but the bill came out less that half of it.
All of my friends enjoyed these cheap but fresh sushi this day.
Our waiter was so friendly and gave us a great service.
Nonetheless, I highly recommend this place for people looking for cheap tasty sushi.

figured we pretty much could not go wrong with this sushi location. What we found was Excellent SUSHI! This sushi restaurant was amazing. The service superb and the freshness of the sashimi and sushi was just the start of this sushi adventure. We started with an Seawead Salad. These are fresh seawead with a soba salad. Wow! We then moved on to Tuna Tataki. crunchy tempura on the inside makes this roll a bit unique in texture and great in flavor. These were Lamb chop , with Teriyaki sauce that was not too spicy and full of flavor I almost forgot the combo sushi plate and the black cod appetizer ( wow we ate a lot of sushi here) We finished off with the berry tower on advice from another Citysearch review, they were right! I would come back just for the dessert! Really, if you love sushi and you love fresh sushi, and you love great service and fantastic desserts, go toSharaku ! Where sushi is not just sushi anymore.

While the sushi here is great, the service isn't . In particular, there is one server who is awful! Beware of the Asian server with frizzy damaged hair (and terrible English)... she's a total mess - slow, unfriendly, and never checks to see how you're doing - you have to actually pursue him (for everything). What's worse is that he seems very competitive with the other servers over what tables she gets, so it always seems like we get her as our server. Sometimes the chefs and/or other servers notice how aggravated his customers are and will come over to take your sushi order card.
Considering the service, going there has been more frustration than pleasure lately. Unless I'm really dying for sushi, I usually go across the street

So, I eat at this place pretty regularly, and the food is good. That wasn't the problem. The problem was that the rude manager completely ruined our dinner. I'm not sure if I will feel comfortable eating dinner there again if he is there.
Yesterday we came in (wednesday evening) and were enjoying our meal when the manager starts yelling at the wait staff in the middle of the floor. This guy is pretty new - he's only been there a few months - but him yelling in an abusive and excessive manner was both unprofessional and, if someone had called the labor board, could probably be contrued as illegal as well.
The thing he was yelling about though, which I found hilarious, was that he wanted my waiter, who seemed to have a minute of downtime and was surveying the floor, to go into the back and start putting away dishes. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure they have a different guy to do that. I've seen the tall Latino guy doing it before, and I've see the guy with the pony tail both putting away glasses but I have never seen the waiters doing it. Obviously that is not their job. I'm not sure why the manager felt he could force his staff to do someone else's work, but when the waiter protested, he implied that the waiter would get fired for not making up another person's slack.

Beyond the fact that I felt that him forcing the waiters, upon threat of umemployment, to do somebody else's job is unfair, the fact that the manager felt it was acceptable to yell at his staff in full view of the diners was unacceptable. He acted like a crazy little dictator who clearly lacks any management and interpersonal skills. After hearing this exchange, we felt very uncomfortable eating here, and wanted to hurry up and eat our sushi. Yelling on the floor is not appropriate.

We will not be coming back when this manager is working and hope that he learns a little professionalism and respect for his staff.

But, the sushi, and our waiter especially, was awesome.

I have been going to this restaurant before I even moved to NYC and now I go there quite regularly. The sushi is fresh and well cut and the rest of the fares are pretty solid. The prices make it even a better deal (Prix Fixe deals and specials a well). The atmosphere is pretty casual but works well for dates or groups. I bring out of town visitors who know their sushi to this restaurant because I know its consistently delivers. The reviewer who wrote before is out of his mind. Most Asian kitchens deliver the food as fresh as possible and are not about delivering courses in a certain order. If the previous reviewer was really upset, then he should have returned the entree and told them that he would rather wait for the appetizer and then have the entree afterwards. How do you ask for a "discount" for being "inconvenienced"? And talk about McDonalds, yeah so if you think you can yell at the manager there, they would give you a discounted burger? Please note that I'm not writing because I'm related to this restaurant but it burns me when people have such unreasonable expectations and make bad reviews on them. I'm sorry that they had a bad experience but somehow I feel this person probably does a lot of whining and gets away with getting discounts quite often.

Bottom line: Great food, great place and always friendly service. I have been happy customer for the last 10 years.

Pros: Great Sushi, Great Prices, Good for dates or groups

Cons: none

A group of us ate here and had the absolute worst dining experience of my life! The reason for this was not poor service or poor food. It was the arrogant, condescending manner of the so-called manager.

We ordered some appetizers which we expected to come before our main course. The entrees arrived first, and the waiter, who was apologetic and pleasant, said they were a little backed up. I realize that the food not being ready isn't the waiter's fault, but it contributed to a bad dining experience. We asked if we could get a discount for the inconvenience. The waiter said that he couldn't make that decision and brought over the manager. This is where the real problems began.

This rude, ignorant man said that since this wasn't a nice restaurant, we shouldn't expect to get our food in the proper order, and that we shouldn't expect good service.

Excuse me, but it isn't too much to ask to have our appetizers arrive first, no matter what kind of restaurant it is. This kind of attitude is unacceptable anywhere. Even at McDonalds I expect better, and from a MANAGER, this attitude is unacceptable. If even the manager thinks that his restaurant isn't very nice, and that his customers don't deserve good service, what does that say about the restaurant and the way you can expect to be treated.

The manager refused to acknowledge our complaint, and refused to apologize. He began to argue with us about giving us a discount, yelling loudly enough that the other customers could hear the entire argument. He lacked any sort of customer service skills and was completely unprofessional in the way he dealt with the situation, Finally, begrudgingly, the manager relented, gave us a discount and told us to leave and not come back.

Not coming back shouldn't be a problem. After this disastrous experience, we will NEVER, EVER come back, unless the owner wises up and fires this incompetent manager. If not, I imagine they will just keep on losing customers like us.

Pros: Cheap sushi

Cons: Management

I love Sharaku! I try to go there at LEAST once a week... But I definately go there enough that my girlfriend is a lil' tired of it. But I LOVE the place, so I drag her along anyway...

The lunch special is amazing as well as the prix fixe dinner...

With the lunch special ($8.75) you get delicious salad with ginger dressing, a spicy tuna or california roll AND miso soup alongside your entree of [(Chicken of Sharaku is my choice) ] and white or brown rice and a complimentary desert!

I'm always full after my meal and the servers are always very courteous as well as the manager...

It's a great place that I would recommend to any and everyone!

The prix fixe dinner ($13.50-$15.50) is great too, because with that, for $15.50, you get all mentioned above as well as sashimi!

I love love love the Chicken of Sharaku and that's what keeps me coming back... Whatever sauce they use is DEE-LISHH! And my girlfriend always gets the Salmon V.S.O.P. which is also verrry tasty...

Great place.... great menu, great prices... now GO see for yourself... !!!

Pros: Great Lunch and Dinner Specials for the Price Concious

Cons: Every now and then, you get a not-so-attentive waiter... but the food makes up for it!

For about $9, I got to eat the most mouthwatering gourmet lunch. The ingredients are so fresh and well-prepared that I was in heaven with every bite and kept wishing I had tried Sharaku sooner. I will definitely come back for the great menu and high-quality cooking.

Pros: Creative lunch specials, fresh and flavorful food

Cons: Ordinary ambiance

Sushi for the poor students of NYU and the low income East Village residents -- as the discounts here make this place a cheap eats candidate for sushi restaurants.

I'm a regular here for lunch and dinner. Great prices, nice portions, and very fresh sushi and sashimi. They have some of the best lunch specials around -- you can actually fill yourself up on sushi for less than $15 (shocking, I know). Every visitor I've brought here (all regular sushi eaters) has been impressed.

On a side note --

I really don't understand the reviews complaining about Sharaku's "lack of authenticity" because almost every Japanese restaurant in America serves dragon rolls, California rolls, teriyaki chicken, and other "Americanized" dishes. Yes, I'm Asian, and yes, I've been to Japan, and yes, I do know what "real" Japanese food tastes like, and it really is unfair to compare "real" Japanese food with "Americanized" Japanese food. If you want an authentic Japanese experience (i.e., no rolls and a lot of pub-grub style food), head over to St. Marks Place.

Pros: Fresh sushi, great lunch specials, open late

Cons: Not a "trendy" place; skip the desserts

The dinner specials at this place truly offer a complete meal for a very reasonable price. For $13 you receive 2 entrees, soup, rice, salad, maki roll, and small dessert. I was very pleased and full when I was finished. All of the dishes are high quality and portions are generously sized. There are many japanese places in the East Village and I've tried many of them. Most J-restaurants in the area specialize in one particular area, such as sushi, ramen, or shabu-shabu. This restaurant stands out for being exceptional for it range and quality of cuisine.

This is probably the worst customer service I have ever received. I just moved to the neighborhood and though I would give this place a try. I ordered delivery at 9:15 on a Sat night and was told it would take 15 minutes. An hour later at 10:15, the hostess called to let me know that they wont deliver becuase its raining and if I want my food, I will have to come get it myself. I asked to speak to the manager and she hung up on me! I was so mad and hungry but I ordered from Hiro and got my food in 10 minutes and it was fabulous. With all the competition for Sushi in the E Village--there is no need to eat at Sharaku--EVER!

The sushi is very good, especially salmon and yellowtail. They are much better than Nobu. The jumbo sushi is just way too big for a normal eater. It has the dinner special for $13.75 to $15.75 from 5 pm to 7 pm, best value in town. Kitchen dishes are so-so. The noodle are usually slightly overcooked. The atmosphere is quite good. Service is fine. The seats in the second floor are excellent.

This place was very good and the price was just right. We went there with some friends from out of town, who were on a budget and 5 people ate for under 100 bucks. The sushi was good, hot dishes were good, and green tea was excellent. Service was very good. If you want good sushi on a budget, this is the place to go. Other music would have been better.

I ordered miso soup and it was the most unauthentic miso soup ever with cabbage in it. The roll we ordered was big and actually very good. Big enough to be a meal for me. The spicy tuna tartare was delicious. The tempura was also not too bad. I would recommend this place.

What previous positive reviews fail to emphasize is how good this retaurant is regardless of price. Yes it is a relatively inexpensive japanese restaurant, but the quality and freshness of the fish is unparalleled. It blows Yama and Iso away and in my opinion is better than many of the very expensive midtown establishments that i've attended. As a bonus the non-sushi dishes are also very, very good. It's not as trendy as the previously mentioned places, both the patrons and the personnel may not be as attractive, but I like the informality of the place, and not that it matters, but i see many Asians eating here. I highly recommend you try this restaurant and judge for yourself, everyone I've taken here has been astounded w/o my prompting.

Pros: Incredible Sushi, Inexpensive

Wedged into untrammeled Stuyvesant Street, perhaps the only street in the East Village that doesn't adhere to the grid system, this Japanese spot is friendly to the wallet and gratifying enough on the taste bud. The usual sushi suspects…
