Please don't support an establishment that still practices unacceptable discriminating practices. This place should be banned. Take other peoples experience and put yourself in their shoes. In a great diverse metropolis like New York-we don't need these types of establishments! Hit-em where it hurts in the pockets. Alehandro was my server, he asked us to leave because me and my friend were not white. He's not even worth his tips. But you can help everyone by not patronizing a place like this.

Pros: there are other cafe's in the area

Cons: poor service particularly to non-whites

I just spent 8 days in NYC and they would have been infinitely worse but for Esperanto cafe where every day, I was able to sit for as long as I needed to contact everyone through e-mail and even read the headlines. I never had more than a drink and at most, a fruit salad. They were always perfectly polite and helpful, to me and everyone else around. Musicians drifted in and out and played, people of all colour, creed and appearence. I happen to be a 60 year old woman and never felt I was out of place, even though the majority were very much younger customers as well as the staff. I will always return to this place, as soon as I am back in New York. (The cakes looked delicious too and my occasional avocado sandwitch was perfect.).

I just saw the last review that was posted. I had a similar experience a couple of years ago. My Korean classmate and I (I'm African-American) were there and although we had plenty to order we barely got service. After much hand waving we finally got a waitress to drop by. Other customers' tables on the other hand, were visited quite frequently without prompting.

My most recent experience was more positive...another Asian friend and I went. Perhaps we got decent service, though, because there was also a German woman with us.

I thought I was being paranoid, but I'm glad someone else also noted this. Definitely worth calling this out!

If you're a foreigner especially not Caucasian,
'order minimum 5 dollars to keep your table' policy will be applied.
You want a just cup of coffee? They could kick you out anytime.

the cafe was crowded? there were only 5-6 (caucasian) customers in there,
had a coffee or juice on their tables, enjoying peaceful atmosphere when I kicked out.

Watch out two female staffs working on friday 2-3pm.

On top of the fact that it never closes, the food is great and reasonably priced! Try the Brown Betty, the cognac pumpkin cheesecake, the chai latte, or the fresh lemonade. I've been there many times with friends and they've all loved it and we've never had poor service. It's such a laid back little spot!!

I like this place a lot. Sure, the waitstaff isn't the most friendly or attentive, but it's a great place to go and get lost in conversation or a book. The panini sandwiches are some of the best I've had (particularly the salami pesto), the salad's always been fresh, the price isn't bad, and I like the decor(the computer phonebooth is a nice touch).

I've been there twice and both times, the service has been surly and unpleasant; also, the coffee is overpriced. I can't really think of any good reason to go here, given that there are about a million better places to get coffee in the Village.

Amazingly this cafe has no use for return customers. I found this out the hard way. Just like the guy below, I visited frequently just after moving into the area. First they kept asking for tips - and then when I put tips into the jar at the register, they informed me tips in the jar go to the barista and I had to tip the waitress as well. Finally, one night I asked for my check - the waitress, who had served me many times before, wrote on my check in my face: "Tips not included". If this is the type of abuse you are looking for, please go warm their seats. Others be warned.

The appeal of an always open cafe near my new apartment has brought me to the Esperanto Cafe three times in the past month. Despite the quaintness of the cafe, and the great atmosphere, the service has been poor each time. While you are free to linger over a book or conversation, getting a check can be a challenge, and change even more so, whether the Cafe is busy or not. Careful not to confuse the counter with a place to order your espresso unless you plan a quick escape, for lingering a minute afterwards brings the prompt scorn of the waitstaff pointing out the the unannounced presence of table service.

People here spend hours working on their laptops and doing their reading. I spent hours there reading and my waitress didn't have a problem with it. The desserts there are quite good, too. The only thing is the seats aren't very comfortable. It doesn't seem to bother all the readers there however.

Esperanto Cafe is the absolute greatest cafe I have ever been to. In the Village, you'd expect to pay an astronomical price for coffee, but not at Esperanto. Coffees only cost around $2.00. The food is outstanding! I highly recommend the Mozzerella Sandwich, Sandwiches are only about $5.00, and they're huge. Giant cookies go for $1.75. Get the ginger, or chocolate chip. If you want a treat, get the Iced Mocha. There's always fantastic music playing, and the waitresses and counter staff are the friendliest people in the city.

Esperanto is just a good mellow cafe where they don't mind if you linger with a book or your laptop over a cup of coffee. Even with the music volume a bit on the loud side, I've never had a problem studying there. The prices are pretty reasonable, and the coffee is really good.

The service is great (maybe even borderline nagging but at least you get attention), the desserts are excellent and the coffee is so very good... Its easy to get overly comfortable at this hip, young, cafe. And you never get the feeling that you need to leave. The only complaint? The music which is sometimes a little too heavy for my taste.
