I should have guessed walking into a half empty resturant on Valentine's Day would be a bad idea. And it really was. We were sat down promptly, but continued to sit at our booth without a single server greeting us, let alone asking us if we wanted anything to drink. Meanwhile, there was a table directly behind us where a server was walking back and forth to serve them, while completely ignoring our existence. To make matters worse, after 15 minutes of sitting without a single word being said to us, a group of four was sat down on the other side of us and was served with drinks within less than 5 minutes. After waiting five more minutes we got up and decided to leave. Being Valentine's Day there was a presence of upper management, if not the owner himself. As we were walking out we had told this man that we had been sitting at a table for 20 minutes without being served and all he had to say with us was "Are you serious" and let us walk out the door without another word. I would understand this kind of service if the resturant was packed, but the resturant was half empty, on Valentine's Day no less. Clearly, we could not critic the food. We can even critic the quality of the water, as we weren't even served that. Overall, judging not from our experience but others that this is a horrible resturant and unless things change it will continue to be this way.

FOOD ORDER PLUS: Catch 22 Sushi--buttery good! But must request for ginger if you want to clean your palate properly.

FOOD ORDER MINUS: 3 layer Eel and Oyster-looked soggy and the taste was overwhelmingly fishy. Miso Soup- salty, White Tuna Melon- yummy, mango sauce on the side gross. Root Chips- stale, Tiramasu presentation was short changed and was a tad bit frozen. Teapots- inconsistent with every table order. Very annoying because I felt as if they ran out of teapots and I was using their manager's personal teapot. Pineapple Juice- watered down

DECOR PLUS: Nice flat screens, bathroom door and sink are pretty cool

DECOR MINUS: Booth seats are too far from the table obviously poor craftmans ship, Lighting is too bright. They obviously did not use a professional to do some handy work because their paint job is a bit on the self-improvement side.

SERVICE; Stinks like week old fish. Not even the cute asian girls serving as eye candy could have excused their snotty attitude and lack of server manners. Pathetic!

OVERALL: Hey, it is Sunnyvale and commerical rent is a lot cheaper than places like Santana Row hence that is probably the only reason why Kampai is still in business.

There are other japanese restaurants that meets the mark. The food and sushi rolls could be better if it wasn't drenched with spicy sauce. Portions are a bit small for high prices. Also the service could be better if the waitress knew how to give reccomendations. However the whole experience was horrible. This place has great decor - very modern and the restaurant is extremely inviting. The bar and drink selection is fantastic - especially the sake and the mojito. The selection of food is expected and there is a selection for vegetarians also. The food was well prepared - flavors and presentation were crisp, not your traditional Japanese - but a good fusion selection.

The bads were the service, which started out well but deteriorated through the night. Food took a while to prepare, appetizers arrived after the main course and the waitress seemed concerned and yet uncaring.

Prices were relatively high (for Sunnyvale) and if the service was up to mark, perhaps the prices would have been worth it if the service was to mark as the entire experience was not worth it.

Would return for the drinks and perhaps some of the appetizer rolls - perhaps the restaurant was having a bad night. However the service needs to improved in order for the place to succeed in the longterm.

The selection of food is expected and there is a selection for vegetarians also. we went in a group of 5. Had to wait ten minutes inspite of making a reservation, the host was rude, service was terrible. The restaurant wasn't very crowded, it was a Thursday night, around 8pm. We ordered after about 15 minutes of being seated, (the server didn't show up before that), and then waited for 45 minutes for atleast the appetizer. When even that didn't show up, we had to get up and inquire at the sushi counter (server didn't come to check), and were told they still hadn't started on our order. By this point, we had realised we weren't being treated very well, paid 12 dollars for 5 drinks, and left. Would not go again. If this is how they treat groups when they just opened, and on a Thursday night, I wonder how they do on Saturday nights. A big disappointment.

I say this, having live in san francisco for many years, and after experiencing the true culinary genius that exists here, did not think any other place outside of the city would satisfy my expectations. I happened to be in sunnyvale, on a business meeting, and took my client here after seeing the website on Citysearch. I'm really glad, and relieved. All four of us had the same opinion. Beautiful dining space, great energy,very surprised by the presense of the great restaurant like this on el camino, especially from the way it looks from the outside. The look and colors of the decor are excting, and when the food and drinks come along, it makes the experience even better. All of the sushi was fresh, and the cocktails were well done as well. From what I understand from my colleagues, the dining options in the south bay are limited, and they were glad that Kampai House is here.

The service is SLOW!!!! Might be because they just opened. The wait would be tolerable if the food was better. The sea bass was pedestrian but the tempura udon was tepid, almost cold. And the broth was too watery and flavorless. I think I'll wait awhile and see if things improve.

After reading the Kampai House's review in Mercuary News, "Fusion with Flair, if you are patient", my take on it is that as long as the food is good, it is worth a visit. I will be the judge.

The four of us went on a Friday night around 7:30pm. The restaurant decor is modern, simple, with a bare, industrial feel to it. A DJ was playing trendy, lively house music. I check off "satisfactory" on the ambiance.

We sat down, the server came to greet us about 2 minutes while we reviewed the menu. The menu price ranged from $4 to $25. With the help from the Mercury New review and the server, we decided to start with couple of cocktails, Captian Crunch, Black and Blue, and Agedashi Tofu as starters, Fire Dragon, Sakura roll, and a few nigiri, and the highly recommended signature plates, Dynasty (duck) and Kyoto Emerald (black cod), and end the meal with the dessert "Mint Condition" a sake infused barlett pear.

The cocktail Oren Ishii, a Lychee Martini, was fabulous, and they did not short change me on my vodka. The food was excellent. The salmon and maguro nigiris were the best ones that I had in Sillicon Valley. The Fire Dragon roll was fun to look at and crunchy, tangy to taste. Captain Crunch, Dynasty, Kyoto Emerald were unique, delicous, and memorable. Mint Condition, the pear just fell apart in the mouth and left a refreshing, sweet, pleasantly surprising flavor that lingers. I check off "satisfactory" on Great Food.

The server checked on us a few times, and the owner stopped by to ask our feedbacks on the restaurant. I didn't have a problem at all.

Being in Sunnyvale for many years, Kampai House had gone beyond this town's expectation. I truly think Sunnyvale deserves better. With good food, I am a patron from now on.
