I love the food, bright fresh flavors. Chef Andrew is amazing. One of my favorite places in Portland. Drinks are amazing-try the bloody mary.

Cafe Nell is my favorite brunch spot in Portland.
The french toast is AMAZING, and their bloody mary, called the Mary Nell, is a killer of a drink that is practically brunch by itself, since it comes filled with pickled veggies, chorizo,

I go to Portland about every other month for business and about 6 months ago, someone took me to dinner at Cafe Nell, and since then it has become my favorite "must go to spot" every time I come to town.
The food is always great and its such a fun spot and its always busy, but not too busy. I love it.

I was entertaining customers in town for lunch, and they suggested Cafe Nell, after driving around looking for parking, because there was a parking lot in the back.
It's a great little neighborhood surprise, and the turkey burger I had was excellent. It comes with grilled onions, but I added avocado and goat cheese. The french fries were addictively fantastic and the chocolate pudding was waaaay too good.

Friends and family took me to Cafe Nell for Sunday brunch for my birthday. Ten of us were seated in the center of the room at a long communal table. It was really busy and buzzing with energy, which made for a fun birthday morning. There are really great windows that look out onto the street, and a fireplace. I had the Monte Cristo sandwich, which was delicious. Several people had gigantic mimosas, and the owner brought me a special new drink to try for my birthday, a pink lemonade made with their own lemoncello, which was incredibly delicious. The service was warm and friendly. We had a great time and I highly recommend it.

We had the most wonderful Thursday night dinner at Cafe Nell. The pan-roasted chicken was exceptional, perfectly crispy on the outside, moist and delicious on the inside, on a bed of creamy mashed potatoes and sauteed spinach. My husband had the lamb shank with pureed parsnips and crispy brussels sprouts leaves which was equally delicious.

A co-worker arranged dinner here for 30+ people, and I have to say that we've had a lot of those as we meet twice a year for our get-togethers, and it's hard to pull off that many people at one time. This place had it all together.
Food and wine pairings were excellent. It was a really fun evening and the service was exceptional too.

Cafe Nell contributes $1 from a champagne cocktail made with Oregon cranberry liqueur to the wetlands conservancy. Our cocktails were delicious, sweet, and bubbly, and for a great cause, and the food and ambience are equally good, and the service was stellar.

I live a couple of blocks from Cafe Nell and have been there for breakfast and happy hour and the $5 breakfast special in the mornings is a really good deal. its usually not very crowded and its cozy. the happy hour is also really good since they have really great happy hour selections for $5 and under and they have even have dessert, a brownie, on their happy hour menu for $2, and since they only ask for a 1 drink minimum, I can have dinner at happy hour for under $10, which is a pretty good deal. The only thing bad about happy hour is that its only served in the bar and it can get really crowded on some nights, and its a little annoying that you cant get happy hour in the dining room. Which is why I take one star away, and give it only 4 stars, otherwise I'd give it 5 stars.

Went for lunch today with girlfriends after Pilates. It's a really cute place. The french fries are addictive and super good.
I had the turkey burger (YUM) and of course the fries.

We arrived at Cafe Nell for a Saturday night dinner, Jan 16th. Without reservations. They were packed, but the owner assured us he could squeeze us in. And then brought us (4) all a glass of champagne to enjoy while we waited. It was worth the 15 minute wait. We were seated next to the fire at the communal table. Our waiter Adam could not have been any better. Very knowledgeable about the menu. And not only was the fare fantastic---best lamb I've had---but very reasonably priced. Nice wine selection.

I had walked by this place twice after 1st Thurs the other night and recommended my friend have her bday party there. The atmosphere is charming. It reminded me of a cafe in Europe. Went with a large party last Sat night so I was thinking it was our size that threw the wait staff off?? Then we got our food and I decided to not recommend this restaurant to anyone else. We got our apps and our dinner at the same time. The anchovie on toast was really pretty bad. Extremely fishy taste reminded me of cat food and I'm not a picky eater. I normally love sardines and anchovies. The seafood platter was also disappointing - seafood was just so so. I only got one glass of wine the whole night because I was sitting in a spot where I couldn't yell out my drink order as the server ran past. She never asked if I wanted anything until she brought the check. I think with a large party that maybe the tips included and they don't care as much?? I have no idea what happened but it was pretty disastrous in a town that has some great places to eat. I won't be back unless its just for a drink. The only reason I give this place 2 stars is because of the atmosphere.

We've tried this place a few times as we are from the "hood" and it's convenient. Again tonight we tried. Sat for 15 mintues at the bar before our presence was noticed. Got drinks. Were not offered a menu. Ever. Staff all milling around, looking frustrated and busy.
Bartender admitted to being "frazzled", but never did ask us if we wanted a menu, or offer to refresh our drinks.
So we decided this was not the "spot", even though we wanted it to be, and asked for our check. At which point were were scolded for not having a small enough cash bill.
Hint to owners: Some graciousness would go a long way. Customers should be greeted with a smile and made to feel like you are happy to see them, not that they are stressing you out. Get rid of the uptight bartender and get someone in who CARES and has people skills. She's running off your business, sweetie.

How can a $50 gift certificate from a friend to a restaurant be a bad thing? When the restaurant is Cafe Nell. Two hour wait (with a half full restaurant) for a tasteless meal. You'd think that a free night out be a happy experience, but that wasn't possible here. Portland has far, far too many great places to bother with this stinker.

I had read some reviews of Cafe Nell, but had not been by to try it yet. Then when I tasted the chef's entry in the Portland Iron Chef competition (he won the people's choice to compete next year for Portland's Iron Chef), I went for brunch the next day (Sunday). The cafe is really cute. The food was excellent. Nice range from healthy to indulgent. Very moderately priced. Great cocktail list.
For brunch there were 5 bellinis, a ramos gin fizz, a couple of other fizzes. Very fun. Great wine list. There was a by-the-glass selection of 12 rose' wines. (in addition to Oregon whites and reds). I had never seen that before. Highly recommend it.

I went to Cafe Nell for breakfast on a weekday, which may be when they have less-experienced staff. The food was really exceptional ... a very creative menu, beautifully-executed. The potatoes were particularly good, I thought ... crispy on the outside, very tender inside. The omelette I had was the French style I prefer, whcih is "runnier" than a lot of people like, so I imagine they get more complaints than compliments, but I loved it.

Our waiter, however, could have been much better ... although there were only three tables full, he seemed anxious to rush us along, and at one point actually picked up my plate to take it away, without asking whether I was ready for it to be removed (I wasn't). After that, it took forever to get our check. I'd go back because of the food, though.

Sous Chef Nick Dellinger is making his mark on the breakfast and lunch trade at Cafe Nell. Nick's attention to detail shows in his well made and tasty creations. Nothing other worldly, just darn good food which is displayed nicely. Portions are more than adequate but not overly large. Both my wife's and my meal was excellent. I enjoyed the Huevos Rancheros and could only complain that I would have liked the black beans to have been a little mushier, personal taste. My wife had the spinach and mushroom omelet with the rosemary roasted home fries both of which were excellent.

My only complaint was that I had ordered a side of chicken sausage which the waiter forgot to include. I pointed it out and within a short time received it.

We are looking forward to trying dinner in the near future.

The building was a major change from the days of Cafe Des Ami.

I had a great time here at this little hideaway in NW. The place was very cute inside, and I loved the bar. I liked the clientele too... they were not the type that was trying too hard to be chic, they just kinda were. The food was good, but I'm all about ambience and experience, so that's what I remember most of. I will definitely be back, and I would definitely recommend it to everyone (everyone who's cool, that is ;-) ).

Ate at this restaurant two times. Things enjoyed: Atmosphere, design, lighting. Problems: The first visit, I ordered lentils, which were severely undercooked. My friend's scallops were served cold. We also ordered a glass of wine each and were charged the wrong price for both. Additionally, we ordered a side of fries, which were delicious, but it came with a hair in it. The second trip still provided for good atmosphere and we were greeted with a friendly garcon. Our waiter, however, couldn't have been any less friendly. He was the bartender, it was a busy night, but when I asked how the chef prepares a medium steak, he said rudely, "Medium." He didn't offer us bread; we had to ask for it. The hanger steak had good flavor, but unfortunately, other than a few bites, was inedible because it was a hunk of unchewable fat. Too bad - we wanted to support this local place, but will not return a third time.

So I have tried Cafe' Nell twice now. First was a quiet breakfast with a friend, only two other tables in the place and the service was crappy. Second time same treatment; wailer had the nerve to ask if the food was worth the wait. The food is nothing special, the environment is loud and the waitstaff is clueless.

If you enjoy okay food with crappy service I suggest Cafe' Nell. Also, they need to figure out how to make poached eggs. Menu says "eggs any style".

I love when new restaurants open up in NW Portland, Cafe Nell was no exception. I went there with my boyfriend for breakfast and while the wait staff was pleasant and the interior is quite charming, that does not account for the fact that my 8$ pancakes were burnt as was the toast; his 3$ side of bacon was undercooked and then microwaved on one side when returned to the kitchen for additional cooking. The homefries, were crispy, only because they tasted like they had been fried in oil earlier in the morning and then left under a heat lamp to "dry." My boyfriend's egg was nicely cooked; however what we initially thought was pepper, turned out to be griddle from the grill. I think this place could most definitely benefit from a new chef who actually cares about the quality of the food he is preparing for paying customers. It would be a shame to see a place aesthetically pleasing as Cafe Nell go under due to lack of taste.

.I've been going to Cafe Nell for about a year now.
I absolutely LOVE it.
Have eaten breakfast, lunch, happy hour, dinner, and brunch there. Always a good experience. It's quickly become my "go to" spot in the neighborhood.
The staff is always friendly. The food is excellent and affordable.

Only drawbacks are that it's been discovered, and sometimes gets really busy. And can get a little noisy.

Some friends suggested I check out Cafe Nell at 20th & Kearney. Said the space had been redone. That it was very cool. And the food was excellent.
I was skeptical, since I had dined there when it was Hurley's and was unimpressed. And thought "why bother".
But I went. And I was shocked. The space was totally transformed from the dark, dingy place it used to be, to what feels like a spacious, but cozy light filled cafe. Modern, but comfortable and cozy at the same time.
Cool fireplace covered in red glass tile, visible from practically every seat in the dining room.
I felt like I was sitting in a cafe in Europe or New York. Which is not a surprise since my server told me that the owners had come from New York.
They serve breakfast every day from 8 am until 4 pm. The egg white omelet I had was fantastic. It came with grilled toast and home fries. It was tasty, but not greasy. The coffee was rich and dark (Caffe Umbria).

The lunch and dinner menus looked tasty: two persons at the table next to me were having a house-ground turkey burger, and a stuffed trout. Both looked great, and they seemed to be enjoying them.

There was a crowd of regulars hanging at the bar.
Good vibe. Can't wait to try their dinner.

Newly opened. I watched this place being gutted and rebuilt with great care. Great location. Not to far from 21st and 23rd, yet close to the Pearl as well. Friendly staff but no KA either - good. The food has been simple but good both times I've eaten here. They are open for breakfast. Also good happy hours.
