I love to come by on Wednesdays and sing my heart out with good friends at Karaoke and drink the $1 drinks all night long. The drinks are good, cheap, and lots of songs to choose from. Plus NO COVER. The perfect Wednesday Night!!!!

I am a regular with my girlfriend and I had a simular situation about not getting a raffle ticket. I was there for one of their parties. To later find out when I went to another bar they were working at (the promoter) This was a special that the promoter was offering not the bar. When I went to the other bar (in the city) I did not receive the special. When I asked them about why I didnt get a raffle ticket. I was told it was for a private party only. I think that is kind of shady too! When I came back to Velvet Rope I mentioned this to the management and they advised me that they were no longer affiliated with that group. I have been back a few additional times thru the summer and it has gotten alot better. There is a good mix of guys and girls together without the drama. I am very pleased to see the changes the new owner has been doing. This place is alot better than it was a year ago.

I had a lot a fun with a group of friends. The drinks were OK. They have great deals on the website. It doesnt matter if you are straight or gay. I had a pizza that tastes like Little Ceasars. UGH.

Overall , we had a fun night

Pros: Entertainment, Fun, Drinks

Cons: Food, needs better "bar food" dont try so hard. Spice it up

OK ..I too really wanted to like this place. ans I did ...however.. The food was a bit bland! OWNER, if you read this DSO something about it. I will give it one more shot. I live in Oak Park and WANT to like the food. I had the pizza (Margarita) It tasted like tomatoes, cheese and bread sandwich that was warmed up.

The drinks were OK . They could use a blender. I know many women (straight) in the neighboorhood who would sit for hours just buying blended drinks.

I have a few sanatary issuses. The bartender made my drink after handling filthy money and didn't use hand sanatizer or anything. I told him I changed my mind after he queezed my lime (some dont see any hand sanatizer there, I am walking out.

The Chef spent too much time coming in and out the kitchen and I wondered if each time he returned back there, he washed his hands...I guess we will never know.

It wouldn't kill them to have turkey burgers on the menu. made not not that frozen patty stuff.

The Music was OK. SO was the drag show. Just fix the food, send the bartenders for refresher courses for drinks (or have a book) and get a blender! Business will pick up. I want this place to stick around. I rarelygive places a second chance.

SO, FIX THE FOOD, SANITitary issuses and it will be OK.

Walk in and the music is hot, place looks nice. Had a fun night until the end when we're about to get our bill... The bartender tells us that the shots that are advertised as being $1 are actually $6 but that we should feel special because they're normally $7. We had to point out to the bartender what the specials of the night actually were because he didn't even know. He then had to go talk to the manager/owner who came and talked to us. We had never been to that bar before and he explained that when the special says "$1 lemon drop shots" that it doesn't really mean that... unless you specifically tell the bartender that you want the cheap special shot, they just make you the regular one. Now trust me I've been to a LOT of bars, and never once have if a special says "this shot is the special" did I have to specify that that's what I wanted. A special is a special, and not a shot of lemon water... to get talked to by the owner like you are retarded is absolutely absurd. And to add to that, we hear all night about a special raffle that's going on and to win a free drink of your choice and to write your name on the raffle ticket that you got when you walked in the door. Well we didn't receive one and so I watched the door. Every black person that walked in got raffle tickets and when someone white walked in, they didn't get one. Being a business owner in Oak Park, I would definitely not recommend this place to anyone in the area or visiting unless you like to be treated like you're less of a person.

Here I am in the prime of my life...looking for the time of my life...so... How did I end up at The Velvet Rope? Gay Women friendly, the Owner greets you, a really busy place? Folks lets have the truth please.

Yes it is decorated beautifully. Ok I got the positive out.

On the several occasion that I have come to visit (all on Friday Nights) it was terrible. Someone to greet me...I think not. Oh wait unless your talking when they take your money. Yes $10 for a glass of wine. The food was recommended by two women (one a butch with grey hair, overweight and dressed like a man) that were there. Best filets they said. So I went back the next week, ordered the filet. I have not had anything that bad since high school. Now I know where the left over spam goes.

Now lets talk people and music. I visited in November and December, each time the place was near empty. Although the same two women (or are they silent partners) were there. A group of Spin Leftovers. Some very nice Gay men a couple of transvestites. One of the waiters was dancing on the dance floor, thats how busy it was! The music...please.

I am a Professional GAY Woman. Where are the places for women like me....well kids it's not The Velvet Rope.

If you want my business and others like me (Professional GLBT) get rid of the music, have a dress code and have food thats good.

I guess the few that were in there just found out that Temptations and Lost and Found are now closed and ended up here. Both places that lost their appeal long ago.
I thought this was a nice place from the looks of it ...it could be.

Pros: a beautiful place

Cons: Food, Service, Price

I love going to the Velvet Rope on Friday Nights for Karaoke with Creoke! The Dj is fantastic and everyone really gets into it. The food is fabulous as well, they just added some new things, like the Baked Lobster Macaroni. Its delicious and creamy with large chunks of lobster. Yummy. As for drinks, I highly reccomend the Pomegranate Martini or a Velvepolitan. Both are delectable. Prices are fair and the staff is friendly and enthusiastic. The atmosphere is just all around fun. Its definitly a great place to relax or party, regardless of the night. If you've never been, ask to go upstairs! They also reserve space for parties which is nice. My friend had a birthday there and we all really enjoyed ourselves!

Pros: Good menu and fun wait staff

Cons: Too small

This is a neat little lounge bar in the middle of downtown Oak Park. The owner is really enthusiastic about the business and personally greets each person that comes in. Drink prices are more comparable to Chicago ($9 for a martini), but the atmosphere more than makes up for it. No twinkies or nazifems (yet) invade the place so it is a nice place to relax with some friends and have a drink.
