I love the casual fee of the place. Not as formal as Merlo on Maple. I love them both, but Trattoria del Merlo is for when I am feeling less formal or I want to spend less, but still want great, and authentic Italian food.

If you want traditional American/Italian food then you should have gone somewhere else. But if you want it to taste like you are in Italy then this is your spot. Don't expect the standard menu selection. But expect to find something fabulous that you had not counted on.

Pros: Exceptional food, and great combinations of food

Not one of the four appetizers or six entrees we ordered were anywhere near good. They were also all over priced for the amount of food served. While the waiter did tell us that the appetizers served 2 people, the Prosciutto di Parma appetizer for $14 came with ONE slice of prosciutto and the Carpaccio di Salmone for $10 came with ONE slice of salmon. That shouldn?t even be considered enough to serve one person, let alone two. As for the entrees, we were told that the pasta special with a duck ragu came with a pink sauce. In fact, it came with NO sauce at all. The waiter claimed it was tossed lightly with sauce but couldn?t find any sauce himself. The Maccheronicini Verdi Salsiccia e Funghi nel Tegamino was supposed to be spinach pasta in a cream sauce. It ended up being a flavor-lacking, crunchy flour pasta with a few pieces of spinach pasta. The rest of the entrees were just as horrible. In a city with so many excellent dining choices, some of which are within a block of this restaurant, this kind of substandard cuisine is unacceptable. There are two sister restaurants, Merlo on Maple or Merlo Ristorante, which, based on this experience, we will be staying far, far away from.

I booked my reserviation on Open Table, we arrived on time for the reservation ane greated by a nasty hostess who took us to the back room of the restaurant. We asked if we could please sit in the front, main area of the restaurant where there were several tables available and she said "no". When I asked why she said that they were reserved for people with reservations. I told her we had a reservation and she said that if we wanted to sit in the main dining area we had to request it, otherwise we would be stuck in the back. She then proceeded to pass every empty table in the back and try to stick us in the back corner. When I told her we wouldn't sit there she rolled her eyes at us. Horrible hostess and terrible first impression!

If I could give this place no stars or half a star I would. Seriously the only nice thing about this place was the door, it was pretty and I was really happy when I went through it on my way out. Took my mom there for her birthday and couldn't even find a decent wine to order. One bottle was $42.00 at $11.00 a glass could be found at Sam's wine for about $12.00 a bottle. I had some Salmon pasta which was over cooked and tasted like ramen noodles. My mom, who was SO excited to try this place had the special (a duck ragu) it came with a wee dusting of sauce and was so al dente that it still crunched! My husband had the other special which sounded great (a breaded pork chop with some prosciutto (ask me where it was?I do not know) it tasted like chicken fried pork. The portions were ridiculous for the price... I don't think I have ever ordered pasta at a restaurant and have been able to see the majority of my plate. I don't mind perfect portions but don't charge me $16.00 for a meal that cost you $4.00 to make. The kicker was desert. We had the Salame di Cioccolata con Panna e Fragole which was literally two little cookies about the size of two half dollars some whip cream and a strawberry. You can bet I ate that strawberry to for what it cost me! Again the portions and the price wouldn't have been an issue had the food been amazingly out of this world. But being below average, in this economy; I don't see this place going a year before it has to close its pretty door for good.

Pros: Close to other restaurants, bars, public transport

Cons: Overprice food, not tasty, snooty hostess, snooty servers

I went to this restaurant with a group of six last Sunday. The food is totally fresh, the pasta soft but yummy, and everything was superbly cooked. The pasta is made in house and you can taste the fresh ingredients. I am usually disappointed by Italian food, wondering why restaurants have such a hard time with crafting excellent dishes. This place is now my favorite Italian restaurant. And the prices are ridiculously reasonable. For 6 of us, it was $200 with tax, tip, a bottle of wine, entrees and dessert. Cheap. But doesn't taste cheap. Will be back!
