A wonderful place for a beautiful positive birth experience. I spent 18 weeks receiving my prenatal care at Kaiser because that was all my insurance would cover, but after bad experience after bad experience and a tour of Andaluz I knew that this was the place I wanted to have my baby. My midwives were Carrie Duncan and her apprentice Kristen Downer and both of them were fabulous! This was my first child and I was (like most first time moms) a bit nervous, but Carrie and Kristen continually encouraged me to trust in my body and in the birth process. I had a challenging birth (an 8.7 lb baby with a brow presentation), but the support of my midwives got me through the 12 hour labor (3 hours of pushing) and in the end I had a beautiful water birth and a sense of empowerment like nothing else I have ever, or likely will ever, experience. I will absolutely without question be heading back to Andaluz when the time comes to have my next baby. In addition the spectacular midwives, the overnight staff were wonderful as well. They came to help me in the middle of the night when I struggled with breast feeding or if I had any questions at all. They also made and ordered in delicious meals for us, I received a postpartum massage and they also brought in a specialist in craniosacral (there was some discomfort for my baby due to her brow presentation during delivery) and a lactation consultant to help me. It felt like I was staying at a bed & breakfast! I simply cannot say enough about how fantastic my midwives and my overall experience at Andaluz was. Feel free to read my birth story if you'd like to read more about my experience: http://thelittlethingswedo.blogspot.com/2012/01/my-birth-story.html

While I agree with other reviewers that the midwives at Andaluz are very empathetic and obviously love their jobs, also that their consultation rooms are very comfy and reassuring, I found their competence and capacity to act as safe practitioners for the delivery of my child to be completely unsatisfactory. I wanted nothing more than to have a natural waterbirth without unwanted interventions. That said, throughout my pregnancy I became concerned about the level of care at Andaluz. Several instances of strange behavior on the part of my midwives made me concerned. At one appointment, one of their most senior midwives had to have me self-insert a speculum because she did not know how to. This was just one such example... At the time of my delivery, the midwives allowed me to become dangerously dehydrated (to a life-threatening degree). They had NO CLUE about what was going on with my labor and often I was left alone even though I was very obviously not doing well. At one stage, the midwives had the "book of Midwifery" open on the bed and were flipping through it. In front of me. After two days of labor. When, after over 48 hours of intense labor, I finally demanded to transfer to a hospital, they delayed and hemmed and hawed and finally insisted that we use our own vehicles. I rode in the back of my husbands car to Emmanuel in extreme distress and agony. Upon arrival, the Nurse Midwives were shocked at my dehydration and general condition and horrified that I was not transported in an ambulance. I was given 6 bags of IV fluids and was still very dehydrated. I suspect that Andaluz avoided ambulance transportation as it is recorded. I furthermore feel as though they deceived me when I asked this very specific question about the number of transports they make and it is my opinion that they are endangering women and babies with their sloppy and unprofessional care. I felt as though a hospital was the last place I wanted to celebrate the life of my baby - more fool me. The Andaluz schtick is that they empower women to make their own decisions. In truth, they are so poorly informed and so fanatical about being anti-intervention of any kind that they completely lose sight of the health of their patients. The difference in the nurse midwives at Emmanuel is immediately obvious... they know what the hell they are doing.

We loved everything about Andaluz. We went in for the free consultation with a midwife and after a tour and some question & answer time she suggested a second midwife that she thought would fit best with our personality. Awesome...we get two midwives!

They are respectful and understanding of all your choices. They give you lots of information on each question you may have and will respect the decision you make. They are more than willing and actually like when partners and family are involved in your birthing experience.

All the staff is wonderful, we felt safe and secure through our whole experience. You can tell all the midwives love what they do, this is not just a job to them.

The birthing centers are beautiful! Each one has beautiful birthing rooms with HUGE tubs. You also get one free meeting with a lactation consultant. They have so much to offer!

If you're thinking about using a midwife please go check out Andaluz. If nothing else you can get a free consultation. But I know once you go in you'll love them!

I would recommend Andaluz to anyone who is wanting to have a child or already pregnant. They offer a free consultation where you will get a tour, watch a video of actual waterbirths, receive a prenatal exam to show you what to expect and plenty of time to have all of your questions answered.

I am so thankful for Andaluz for providing me with the perfect environment for me to have a safe and wonderful birth experience. The midwifes, doulas and all the staff are supportive, loving and professional. I had both of my sons at Andaluz. My first in 2000 at the Tualatin location and my second in 2009 at the Portand location. Both locations are clean, warm and have beautiful birthing suites. Love, love, love Andaluz!!

Andaluz has a lot of great midwives to choose from and a lovely facility that feels like home. Having two locations, the Portland and Tualatin birthcenters, makes it so more families can have a water birth.

I can't say enough about the amazing women at Andaluz! My daughter was born in the water at the Tualatin center in 2005 and since then they have expanded to include a wonderful new birth center in downtown Portland. If you are looking for an out of hospital birth but aren't quite comfortable with birthing at home I highly reccommend either center. The rooms feel just like home, but better because someone else does the cooking and cleaning!

I came to Andaluz at 20 weeks as a surrogate. They treated me and the intended parents wonderfully and with great care. Our situation was different, but they accommodated our needs and supported both the parents and myself post-partum.
After the birth of the baby we each got our separate rooms at the birth center and were taken care of and pampered. I even received a post-partum massage and it was amazing!

I love, love, love Andaluz! The midwives are amazing, loving, caring and best of all give you choices! The rooms are amazing to birth in. I would never go back to giving birth in a hospital after giving birth at Andaluz.

The midwives at Andaluz are absolutely amazing! I had my baby there in 2004 & have nothing but praise for them. The rooms are like B&B's. The prenatals, labor care & postpartum care are above average. I would recommend them to anyone looking for a positive & delicious birth experience.

The midwives at Andaluz were so very supportive of our desire for a natural, intervention-free birth. We used the center in Tualatin and they now have a new center in Portland. I highly recommend their expert services. Every pregnant woman deserves the care of a midwife!
