Finally given up on this restaurant after eating there regularly since its opening. Theres a lot to like about this place, great space (although very loud at times), outdoor seating in summer, weve enjoyed some nice food, their fish

This is a restaurant not to be missed. The seasonal variety of the menu is a standout. The chef knows what he/she is doing with the combination of flavors and textures. The lamb was outstanding.
The only minor issue was the appetizer- we had a charcuterie dish which was unremarkable and boring. Nothing a very good martini couldn't make up for!

Pros: Very interesting menu choices, service is polished

Cons: The tables could be a bit more comfortable.

I was in town for a sports event and had been told about Lucca and the amazing food. I was lucky to get a table. The atmosphere is great and the place just has a happy, friendly feel to it. My dinner was wonderful, I had the chicken. I look forward to coming back and trying another dish from the menu. I will be spreading the word to my friends.

I travel from SEA to PDX monthly and always have Lucca on my trip schedule. Whether its grabbing a table to meet with friends or sitting at the bar and watching the action, it's a can't-miss visit.

Lucca is in my neighborhood, what a treat to have such a quality restaurant so close. Lovely atmosphere, great entrees, prices acceptable. I have found the service to be reliable and have really enjoyed my experience

Yuk. We had a terrible meal on the 1/8/10. Ordered the carbonarra and it was horribly salty. The squash soup was bland and awful, too. I hope they haven't changed chefs because that will be there downfall!

Pros: Ambiance

Cons: Possible change in chefs

Lunch on Friday. Roasted squash soup with pesto was very good. However, both pizzas at our table tasted like cardboard; overcooked, (burnt on bottom)with scant toppings. Reminded me of the cheap frozen pizzas we used to buy for the kid's parties. The pasta dish went half eaten. First and last visit.

I really love the atmosphere and the food, but apart from a few of their wait staff, the majority of their room service is seriously wanting. It's hard to imagine that in this economy it's hard to have a waitress that ignores a table for 15 mins or so on a mid-week night. I think after two really wanting nights at Lucca in 2 weeks, it's time for the owners to seriously review their service operations (note - it may not be the wait staff, but how they run the store) because poor service will drive us (and others) to other restaurants.

OWNERS - PLEASE fix this problem, I really want to love your place, but at this rate, I'm going to stop coming and take my time, money, and stomach elsewhere (like RSB, where I actually get service); you need to spend time training and reinforcing the performance of your floor service staff.

I ate at Lucca last night with a group of people and it was delicious! We had not eaten here before, our fellow diners have and they love it. I see why. The food was excellent, and the service was even better. We had an antipasto platter to start and salmon for dinner. Both of these dishes are not something I would normally order, but Dena, our waitress, described the food in such a descriptive and delicious way, my mouth was watering with every word she said, and I couldn't help but go with her recommendations. She was so pleasant, smiling, attentive and had a great sense of humour. she made a wonderful impression and completely changed the mood of one of our crabby friends dining with us. And the food was delicious! The salmon, King I think, was tender, moist and full of fresh flavor. It had fresh vegetables and an olive sauce that I've never had the likes of before! Dena said that the chef is a woman from San Francisco and she spoke of her as though she was as impressed with her cooking as we were. How refreshing to be served such great food by a person who obviously takes pride in the food she serves. I will be back! I should mention that ALL the service we received, from the girl who seated us to the man who refilled our waters, was very friendly. The people who work here obviously like their jobs and take great pride. Bravo!

Pros: The service

My wife and I have eaten here a few times and it's been consistently pretty good. We enjoy going for brunch, the scones are always very flavorful, the bacon and egg pizza is a favorite, good bloody marys. The service staff during brunch is very friendly and helpful, although this past weekend was different. It started out fine, we were seated by the nice gal who took our orders. As she was getting our coffees, the busboy came over and asked if we had any questions. The kid was unshaven and reeked of a what I can only presume was a fun July 4th with a lot of drinking. As the brother of a recovering alcoholic, I immediately recognized the odor. We told him we didn't have any questions, thanks. Our server brought our coffees, then politely excused herself to seat another table. The busboy came over again to ask if we had questions. I remarked that we did not, but we could make one up if that would make him feel better. The server came over again and gently led him away, coming back to take our order. Neither us nor the server said a word about the busboy, but I think both parties were uncomfortable with the obvious situation. A while later as my wife and I ate our meals, we saw the busboy behind the bar pouring liquor into a paper cup with a lid and drinking it on the way back to the kitchen. We felt bad for our server, she was really nice, and we wondered if this is the way she has to work every weekend.

Cons: People working drunk?

Very nice place, I would recommend it to anyone. Good service, good atmosphere and good food. I really love the pizza, unfortunately everything else is a little over priced. It would be amazing if they had a happy hour!

The word on the street is that the chef is relatively new, and she has her hair done at Arabella's, by Steven....with that aside....my wife and I were in town for a visit, and we had not place to go for Valentines Day. We made some contacts and were graciously allowed to "squeeze in" for the big day......antipasti, "breakfast," a couple of pizza's with a range free egg cooked in the middle for "dipping," and beef and pork that melted in our mouths......this is the best kept secret in Portland, and I imagine that the next time we stop by Portland on Valentine's Day unannounced we will not be so lucky to be squeezed in.......Lissa is one rockin chef, and she obviously has an outstanding crew.....try it....you will love it....PS: $$ for wine, and all that food for 4!!!

I wandered into Lucca with a girlfriend one night and was pleasantly surprised by the experience we had there. We ordered drinks (the fancy nancy is great) and pizzas (margherita and salsice), and enjoyed watching the hot pizza cook with the dark curls toss our dough!! The service was great, the food even better, and the view (wink wink) was the best! Luckily, Lucca is a short drive from my house so I will be back!

I recently visited Lucca on a sunny day and really enjoyed my experience. Our entire experience was fantastic. It is rare to receive as good as service as we did from our server that day. I wish I would have taken down our server's name, because she was so attentive and friendly. Our food was great too. We started with the "simply greens" salad and had two pizzas (Margherita and an Arrabbiatta with sausage) both suggested by our server. All of the items were delicious. The food was so good, I decided to order dessert, which is something I rarely do. We had the profitoroles, which was an amazing concoction of toffee, ice cream, and sea salts. I highly recommend this neighborhood gem.

Lucca is only a 15-minute walk from my house, but it's taken me a few months to try it. Went there because a good friend suggested it. I am SO glad she prompted me to go--it's my new favorite Italian place in town (I've been missing Assagio dreadfully!). Our server was incredibly pleasant and very well informed--she made a great wine suggestion based on what I told her I was looking for. I had an appetizer that was the special of the day--figs wrapped in prosciutto with goat-cheese crustini. It came with some lightly dressed arugula in the center and it was DIVINE! Light and sparkling flavors, high-quality ingredients, paired with a deft, light touch. Then had the pasta with pesto, green beans, and potato dish. I had had exact same dish many years ago at one of the top restaurants in San Fran, but that dish disappointed greatly. Not Lucca's version--it was fantastic! Best pesto I've had in Portland. Portion could have been a bit bigger, but I'm a hungry runner, so eat more than most. Ended meal with delicious, generous profiteroles with caramel gelato in them. I"m still drooling thinking about entire menu. This location seems to be cursed, but i hope Lucca thrives and survives! A+!

Pros: Innovative takes on classic Italian; atmosphere; service; selection; accepts reservations

Cons: slightly small portions of entree pastas

We were not impressed with Lucca. The staff was rude. My expensive drink was spilled in the bread basket as it was set on the table but the server did not apologize or clean it up. We were seated next to the noisy bar. The food was bland. We had to wait and wait for service and finally had to track down our server to pay. We won't be going back.

Yikes!
It was a busy Sunday (Good right?) (Not So Much.) I prefer to sit in the bar where all of the action is. My bartender on this night seemed to be some shade of green (lime, kelly, sage?) It, is possible to serve the customers (your customers at the bar), as you are serving the dining room customers as well. My experience as a bar owner is to, get a drink to the customer ASAP! This was not the case. I waited, and wondered if I had sat in the black hole of the restaurant. I ordered the mussels as an appetizer, and it was excellent. I ordered Cod as my main course. I forked into my main course and was set back by what I found. Cod is a tricky fish to cook, but raw is not usually the mistake. I had to take a look around to make sure I was not at a hot sushi spot. I was correct that I was at Lucca on Freemont and the main course was awful. I had obviously had 1 bite, and pushed my plate away. The greenhorn finally came by and asked me if I wanted my meal boxed up? I said 'I'm sure it is wonderful, but it is not cooked beyond raw.' He said 'OK' and tossed my plate into the dish bin. NO NOTHING! I will, and do pay for what I order. I feel like the bartender on Sunday night had no clue on customer awareness. Within 30 seconds of my dish touching down in front of me I knew that it was improperly cooked. If, at that time it was addressed I would of sent it back for a final torching. But, since that slimy square sat if front of me with the 1/2 cooked Yukon Potato's. I have no mercy. It was awful. The bartender was absent and clueless. Look! I work in the food service industry. Give me a drink, give me some food, check on me and leave me alone! All, I felt was alone. I have NO problem paying for what I eat. Please, make sure what I am eating is cooked and up to PAR.
I was very disappointed in my experience. I will not go back. I got stroked for something that I did not eat or enjoy. T,
FYI You can Comp a meal or dessert!

Found this place last night and could not have been more impressed. The service especially was outstanding from the moment we walked in the door.
A nice wine list allowed us to get a great selection at a reasonable price. We ordered the Anti Pasta del giorni and enjoyed an excellent selection of appetizers.
We also ordered a pizza, but were dissappointed when the bottom was on the burnt side. It was edible, but definitely had bites of a burnt taste. We were discussing if we should send back when a staffer approached us and asked what the problem was. I was so impressed that he was watching the room and could see we were not eating and looked unhappy. We did not have to hunt someone down or complain. When we showed him the pizza he took it immediately and we had another in less than five minutes.
We were so glad that we sent it back, cooked properly the flavors of the high quality cheese and sausage emerged--delicious.
As we finished our meal the chef herself came out to see if everything was ok and to apologize. She brought us a treat of two figs stuffed with cheese and topped with almonds. Oh my gosh--as my husband said, "it was better than chocolate."
Anyone can make a mistake, but the fast and gracious way this resolved didn't even feel like an interruption to our meal. The food was delicious and every member of the staff incredible warm, friendly, genuine and helpful.
We will be back!

This place has the most expensive drinks in town. I ordered a pasta dinner that was $12.50. My wife ordered a pizza that was $12.00. We each had a martini before our meal. I ordered a second one during dinner. The martini's are $10 per drink. This was not a fancy schmancy martini. It was a bombay saphire martini with olives. I have never paid $10 for a martini in Portland, not even in the Pearl district or at downtown restaurants. Bottom line, despite the fact that I live in the neighborhood, I am not going back. The food is good (not great), ambience is good (not great). My advice: if you are in the neighborhood go to Pastini at NE 15th and Broadway - the menu is bigger, food is as good, and it will cost you a lot less when you walk out the door. It's too bad, bc this is coming from someone who would love nothing more to have a sweet little spot within walking distance of their front door...

Pros: good service

Cons: terribly overpriced drinks...for goodness sake this is a neighborhood restaurant not the Pearl

.

have been twice for brunch on sunday and for dinner. the cheese plate was top notch, the pizza with the fennel sausage was excellent, and another appetizer that was the deep fried goat cheese with a garlic dipping sauce was another great choice. the appetizers alone are a good reason to go. brunch was an unhurried event, in a relaxed and quiet setting. both times i have dined here the noise level was really non existant, its on fremont which has several restaurants i frequent so i am familiar with the area. brunch had quite a few great choices. its a little expensive, but if your not a big drinker, its reasonable and well worth a look. the staff service was friendly and very attentive without being overly attentive. serving sizes are not large but well proportioned.

The restaurant itself is great inside, however the food was just OK. Nothing to bring me back or remember it. Such a bummer considering the location and atmosphere. Drinks were standard but way overpriced, waitstaff was fine, overall nothing to make it stand out.

As I live in the neighborhood, I've been to Lucca 3 times now, and each time has been a pleasant experience. I've found the wait staff, bartenders, and owners to be friendly and expedient. The specialty drinks can be off and on, but the wine selections struck me as perfectly adequate and reasonably priced.
As for the food, I haven't had a bad meal yet, although the pork was a bit fatty last time, but still tasty.

All in all, I enjoy it more overall than the previous 3 restaurants that have died on that corner. I hope Lucca is here to stay!

Pros: friendly service, great risotto appetizer (rhymes with halls, starts with a B)!

Cons: busy (although that can be a good thing), can get a bit loud, too

The pizza I received was bland, overpriced, the cheese wasn't even all the way melted. And it was so small, it'd have been better suited as an appetizer. My mom ordered pasta and didn't finish it, although I can't say for sure why. Beers are five dollars (ridiculous) and taste like beer you'd get anywhere. This restaurant is trying too hard, and doesn't belong in this neighborhood. Our server came by for our drink order, but the busser did more of the work. He even delivered our food. Our server returned when we were long done with our meals, to ask how everything was, then didn't ask if we wanted desert, just dropped off our check, and walked away.

Pros: i won't be going back

Cons: everything

We dropped in on Friday evening and although the place was fairly full we got seating for two with no waiting. The decor is very nice and a great improvement over the last restaurant in this space. The food was not fantastic but it was good and a good value for the price. The service was terrific - friendly and attentive without being intrusive. The down side was the noise level -- at times the noise was almost painful. Because of the noise, it will be awhile before we go back. For anyone who doesn't care about the noise level, Lucca is worth more than one visit.

Wow, I've been here several times and have vowed to keep coming back until I have tried everything on the menu. (I'm nearly there) Everything I have eaten at Lucca is fantastic. I'm originally from Boston, and have a hard time finding great pizza outside of Boston's North End, but at Lucca, thanks to their wood-fired pizzas, my longing is over. The food is gourmet but never pretentious, the salcicce pizza (Salami) is out of this world. And that goes for the rest of the menu - the salads are delicious, and fresh, the entrees (chicken under the brick and spagetti and meatballs in particular) are outrageously good. Picture food that would make your Italian grandmother proud in a chic, relaxed setting, with a friendly staff. The prices are reasonable when you consider the fresh and high-end ingredients they use. And to top it off, you have to try the profiteroles, delicious puff pastry with ice cream and delicious chocolate sauce with a Lucca twist, a dusting of crushed Heath bar. You will leave with a smile on your face.
