This review is really between 2 and 3 stars. Our AC was suddenly blowing warm air during the middle of a heat wave we had in June 2012. We called GSM since they had previously maintained our units. The tech arrived within 45 minutes and had the problem diagnosed within 10 minutes. In between many, many sales pitches on a potential service agreement contract which I could use immediately to save 20% on my repair, the tech pulls out a binder and points to a price for the repair my unit needed, which was $229. The tech said he had all the parts on the truck to make the fix immediately. I was a bit surprised at the high cost of the repair, but felt I had to go ahead with the repair. The tech took no more than 15 minutes to make and test the repair. I asked to retain the damaged part which ended up being a single soda-can sized device that ramped up the electrical voltage to pressurize and run the refrigerant through the lines. Total cost of the 1/2 hour repair was $308, which included a $75 service call fee. After the tech left I found the part I had just paid $229 for installed online for $28. EXACTLY the same part. It is a job any qualified technician should complete in 15 minutes and even if the part was marked up 100%, the bill should have been much lower. I could have turned them away but then be out the $75 tech service call by having to pay the same diagnosis fee to the next company to do exactly the same thing. Discussions with the service manager about the situation went nowhere, citing only that they have to cover very high overhead. In the end I am fine with the repair and timeliness of the job, just not the overcharging of the repair cost when they essentially have you in a captive market and blinded to their repair pricing prior to making a financial investment in the diagnosis. There is no incentive for GSM or any other HVAC company for that matter to be openly competitive instead of using EYES ONLY pricing binders. Auto repair centers were forced by law to post their pricing for certain jobs - the HVAC industry should be forced to do the same.
