I was out of town traveling to Baltimore, when my car began to sputter. It was drivable, but sounded worrisome. So, I called around Baltimore to get quotes for diagnosing the problem. I got anywhere from $60 to $160, except for Butch at 5 star who told me no charge. "Wow!" was my response.

However, free was only for the diagnosis, once I got there he diagnosed all manner of problems and the price of repair skyrocketed.

Butch said that the coil pack sparked under load and said he'd need to replace the coil pack and ignition module.

Butch said that the fuel injectors needed cleaning (he wanted $89.99, you can buy a tube of cleaner and dump it in for $5 from Advance Auto)

The final problem he found was that the idler pulley was loose and was liable to come off any time and that he needed to replace it.

Then I was presented with a bill around $600.

I was leery of driving home with my car 5+ hours with it making the strange sputtering, but since it was working OK, I decided to chance it. Fortunantly the car made it home just fine.

I then to my car to my home town, family mechanic.

Guess what?

He went over every single item that Butch said was wrong and determined that NONE OF THE THINGS 5 STAR SAID WERE MESSED UP HAD ANY ISSUES! The only thing that was wrong was a little water in the fuel line from the snow, which will work it's way out in time, or you can purchase a $5 bottle of Heet water removal treatment to speed things up.

Bottom line is that all I did was pour in some Heet water removal treatment and the car never had any issues with any of the supposedly failing systems that 5 star said were failing.

So, either they were having an off day when they diagnosed my car, or they were purposefully inflating the bill. Either way I'd avoid 5 star at all costs.
