Our pets, two dogs and two cats, have always received excellent care by Dr. Counts. She has gone out of her way to accommodate us since we live quite a distance from the clinic. Because of our experience, I was very dismayed to read the recent unflattering review of her by a non-client who took advantage of her caring nature and then rebuked her.

I guess we can be generous here and rationalize the gentleman's completely obtuse rant about Dr. Counts by assuming he was too distraught over his injured dog to think clearly. Shawnee Animal Clinic is not a 24-hour staffed hospital where you would expect to see a smiling and efficient staff awaiting you upon a 2:30 A.M. visit to the E.R. Instead it is a private clinic where the doctors and staff all work all day, very hard days in fact, and the doctors themselves answer "on call" emergency calls from home during the night. They are apparently one of the few, maybe the only clinic, who will answer an emergency call in the middle of the night. If Dr. Counts was awakened from a sound sleep, answered a call from a perfect stranger and agreed to get up, drive to her clinic and treat that stranger's pet at 2:30 A.M. doesn't that already speak to her concern for the welfare of animals? Believe me, the thought of $200 would not be enough remuneration to make me decide to do that! Dr. Counts is 100% devoted to the welfare of animals. Anyone who knows her at all, or has had a pet saved by her quick thinking and care would certainly attest to that.

It was unfortunate that the gentleman chose to focus on what he felt was lacking, a smiling, happy customer servant, rather than what he got, which was timely, emergency care from an extremely talented doctor, care which might possibly have saved his dog's life. If he thinks the non-client emergency deposit seems too high, then he should call his vet now, after the emergency has been handled by someone else, and ask why he was unavailable. That availability, after all, could have been priceless.

I have been taking our family pets to the Shawnee Clinic for many years. The staff are always so pleasant and concerned for your pet.I have called in the middle of the night for support and advice; they have always returned my frantic calls and let me know if I was over reacting to the symptoms or if I needed to bring my pet (child) in. They take care of my family as they do their own. Dr. Gail and Dr. Angie have always taken the time to listen even when the waiting room was completely full and I know they were very busy. I have a new puppy now and they were very helpful in letting me know what shots I could give to save money and I never have a hard time getting an appointment. The waiting area is pet friendly, but I would like to see them get more space.

2:30AM is not the best time to form a first opinion. This writer had never been to this clinic before, was not a client, and they had never seen his pet before. She chose to answer his emergency phone call during the wee hours of the night (after working an overtime day and knowing she had to be back at work to treat her regular clients at 8AM that same morning) since his regular veterinarian apparently slept thru the whole ordeal. Shawnee Animal Clinic offers emergency service to their clients. If she did not care about the welfare of his pet, she would not have treated it at all - but she did -for shock, started I.V. fluids, x-rayed and treated it for pain - all of which kept her at the clinic until 5AM. A ray of sunshine? NO, not at 2:30AM after being asked to treat a non-client's emergency. $200.00 deposit? Yes - they require this deposit of all non-client emergencies, as they usually do the dirty, critical work stabilizing a pet and then the owner takes it to their "regular" vet the first chance they get, without paying their bill. She was the vet that got out of bed and came to admit and care for his pet, knowing the full time that his regular vet was sleeping thru it all. When emergencies occur, its a traumatic time for both the owner and the pet. Do not let this one review affect the view of the entire clinic. They have a wonderful and caring staff and always keep the animals welfare top priority. If she didn't care for animals, she sure wouldn't get up at 2:30AM to put in another 2-3 hours on top of the 16 she just worked, or have built a shelter to care for unwanted animals where she also gives of her time, or have become a veterinarian in the first place.

I'm glad to see so many positive responses to my first posting. First, I HAVE been a client of Dr. Gail Counts, underline have. Secondly, when it comes to my pets, money is not an object, regardless of what was read into my previous statement. Also, she advertises 24 hour emergency services, so she should be prepared to be "awakened from a sound sleep" when she's on call, and not be so whiny about it, as some of her clients seem to be. I expect and demand excellent care for my animals and won't accept anything less. Yes, 3 o'clock in the morning isn't a lot of people's "best" times and I realize that. My regular veterinarian's emergency line happened to be out at that time unfortunately, and when I discussed it with him, it was promptly taken care of. Also, for your information and perusal--how can a wound become so quickly and obviously infected in a little over twelve hours IF it was supposedly treated? Also, the fracture was splintered so badly that I am the one who chose amputation, and my pet is getting along GREAT!! As for being on a completely obtuse rant--again I'm NOT a stranger to that clinic, and yes, I've been treated rudely before this incident and still stayed for treatment. If you comment to this "rant", please be more original than using a TV euphemism, e.g. "priceless". I stand by my previous statement. The responses have been so totally untruthful about this entire incident as to bring a good belly laugh to me. Thank you readers for that, at least!

I have been taking my dog to Shawnee for years. He loves it there. The staff is very knowledgeable and caring. I boarded him there once while on vacation, and he didn't want to come home. I wish they had a bigger area for boarders to stay, but they take them for a lot of walks. They encourage you to call and check on the animals anytime. They took care of my cat who had been hit by a car. I know they did everything they could to save him, but he passed away. They were very comforting, and even sent me a sympathy card.
