Decided to finally try this place today, as it always seems to be crowded so I figured it must be good, right? Well, it's probably crowded because all of those people have been waiting for 25 minutes for an effing bagel!

When I walked in, I asked if they took a debit card. The unsmiling woman behind the counter stoically shook her head yes. I get in line and wait 10 minutes for someone to even look at me, let alone take my order. Mind you - there's at least 6 people milling around behind the counter. Sure, they're pleasant enough, but smiling at me doesn't do me much good if you're not going to take my order.

While I waited, I couldn't help but notice that the egg salad looked like it was growing something, the paninis looked days old, and the spinach "kanish" (sic) looked like something you'd find on the walls of a cave. I considered walking out, but stupidly didn't.

I finally get to order my simple onion bagel with plain cream cheese. After another ten minutes of waiting, I considered walking out for the second time. I decided to stick it out for reasons I'll never know. FINALLY, my bagel comes along and I hand the woman my card.

"$5 minimum." (my order was $4.75, which by the way, is outrageous).

I said, "Well, I don't have any cash. You didn't say that when I asked you." She simply takes the bag with the bagel, puts it behind the counter, and looks away to the next customer. WTF?

I walked out, and I'll never step foot in that place again.

FYI - You can get TWO delicious bagels with gournet cream cheese, a drink, AND a smile, for under $6 at Corbet and Conley an Ave and a half away. Well worth the walk.

Pros: I wouldn't know - I never got my bagel

Cons: Rude, horrible cashier, long wait

Mid Manhattan seems to be running out of real New York bagel shops, but thankfully this store remains. You can be certain you will be getting a real NY bagel from this store with anything you want on it!

Prices are normal, bagels are normal, service is horrible. Manager made me feel unwelcomed, and even taunted me. I had no idea that he was the manager until I asked for the manager. From the woman at the cash register to the workers in the back - they're were all rude. I pay for their products, and shouldn't have to feel that I'm begging them for something. I'll never go back there again. My company usually caters breakfast from there, but that's going to stop also.

Pros: Semi-okay prices

Cons: Rude workers & manager

I go to class a few blocks away, and I go to pick-a-bagel a few times a week. It's cheap, the workers are fun, and the food is the best in the area. It's great for a place to grab a quick bite to eat.

Besides the fact that everything is overpriced, prices also change depending on who's working. For 2 bagels and 2 coffees I waited an hour and I live a few blocks away. The mans attitude on the phone was horrible...the food is good but I think the place is overrated.

I'm surprised to hear anyone complain about Pick a Bagel on Third. In one week, I ate a bagel from each of the top 20 ranked bagelries (according to citysearch) to find the REAL champion of New York. H & H is the one everyone raves about, but Pick a Bagel on Third definitely had the best texture and the best size.

The only downfall is that the bagels at Pick a Bagel were cold when I walked in and H & H's were piping hot. Still, I could tell Pick a Bagel was the champ! I'll return to their store and H & H any time I'm in New York. I was not impressed with Tal, Daniel's, Murray's, Ess-a, or any of the rest of them.

Pros: Texture, size and taste are just what a bagel connoisseur looks for

Cons: Not enough hot bagels being churned out, service was decent

i've been working in midtown for a few weeks and have yet to find a decent bagel. while these are far from the best, they are also far from reasonably priced.

Pros: great location, perhaps best bagel within a close range

Cons: not a true new york bagel, too expensive

.

The prices change day to day according to who is working and which way the wind blows. If you like being "herded" through the line and paying top dollar for a bagel this is the place for you.

Pros: near train stop, clean

Cons: , not enough seating, unfriendly service

.

Pick-a-bagel is mediocre at best!! Their bagels are often hard and their spreads and fillings are often not very fresh. If you want real, hot, soft bagels, head to Avenue N bagels in Brooklyn! You won't be disappointed!

I've been giving these guys a second, third, fourth... chance for two years now. Not anymore. If you don't loose a tooth on the bagels, you'll loose your lunch on how much you'll spend on it.

If you're looking for a simple bagel and coffee, do yourself a favor and get the best bagels (and bargain) in the US from your local streetcorner bagel cart.
