I absolutely love this little place---and it's little place next door.\r
The deserts, entrees, and all else are scrumptious.\r
And the staff and service are wonderful.\r
Ironic, that at such a zestful place, where it's crowded every night

I've been to the Little Door a handful of times over the past few years and every time is just as amazing as the first time. The food, service and wine are always perfect! I even order desert here, which I don't usually order elsewhere, because its so good. Everything here tastes different and better than I expect it to. For example I ordered a tuna plate which I expected to be spicy, but it was sweet - unexpected but soooo delicious. It's a great date spot or great place to take out of town guests, the mood ambience and patio are sensational.

I have eaten at the Little Door several times over the last 10 years. I love the ambiance. But I am progressively become more and more disenchanted. This is mainly due to the pomposity of their waiters. The food, which once was wonderful, is now just above ordinary for this kind of restaurant. I don't mind paying exuberant prices for an amazing experience, but the quality of food, over priced wine and inflated ego's of the waiters no longer justify their prices. It feels as though the Little Door has lost a little bit of it's soul.

This place is an absolute must for all couples! The ambience and decor are perfect. The outdoor patio is covered with gorgeous little lights, trees, plants etc. You definately feel like you are somewhere other than Los Angeles. For dinner I had the grilled Ahi Tuna (medium rare) comes with baby veggies and a delicious hummus. Washed down with some fancy bottle of wine a la J.R's good palate.

Well - the ambience was good, the food was adequate and there wasn't anything to complain about, but I have to say that there was somehting not quite right. The service seemed very mechanical. Wasn't personal at all. Doubt I'll go back, even though the food was decent, I just didn't really enjoy myself there and it doesn't stick out as one of the best dining experiences to be had in this town. I guess it's just overated as celebrities tend to dine there, so I'm told anyway.

I took a friend to The Little Door for dinner after having it recommended by a friend. Yes, it's charming and very european, but the food was an insult. I could have sworn that the peaches that came with the foie gras were canned...oh, no you don't, not with foie gras and not for a 30.00 appetizer, not to mention the ridiculous puff pastry that should never have been on the plate...the duo of beets appetizer had a curious yellow "sauce" on it that nearly frightened me. The waiter won the prize for hovering...my friend and I clearly were enjoying a relaxing, slow moving evening and he couldn't even finish his story because the waiter kept "checking in"...uh, I'm in the restaurant business...read your guests!!! Not to mention he had them fire our entrees too soon and that's when the hovering really kicked in, he screwed up and had to get the appetizer plates out of the way because dinner was ready...and by the temperature it was when we received our entrees it still had sat before being delivered. Not the guests' fault, for a 350.00 dinner for two it should have been a much better prepared meal and much more professional service. Oui!

Now I'm sure the place was romantic at some point but they have since piled so many tables that each patron is right on top of the next. So not only do you hear every lame Hollywood and wannabe starlet conversation but you get gawkers drooling on your plates. The patio is noisier than a bar or cocktail party so if your on a date you will be yelling at them. The music is just old Buddah Bar and Cafe Del Mar mixes on repeat reminding me of the countless commercials using the same songs. The service was nominal, waitresses were cheerful and menu knowledgeable, but for $40 entrees you would expect an attentive wait staff. There was no new napkins, glasses, new utensils per course, chilled desert plates or forks; it basically was just like any old restaurant there. Nothing like the nice Westside restaurants like Bandera, Peppone, Capo, or Lawrys where you get good service for your dollar.

So what are you paying for? Well the appetizers were the best part. We then tried a few entrees that looked to be their specialties. The menu starts off with a fillet mignon and rib eye; both average. The couscous/lamb royale dish was tasty but not worth the $40s, much like from a cheap Moroccan place. The duck duo was weak and not served warm, a very salty leg confit accompanied by rare slices of duck breast in a bland lavender sauce, a carrot flan was the best part of that dish.

The Little Door is just like an over budget Hollywood movie with no real story. You are paying for the image with The Little Door. From the street the place looks good and there are expensive cars. Inside looks charming when not packed. To us it seemed more like a lunch spot than a romantic dinner destination. I would recommend checking it out for a glass of wine and appetizer but not for a multiple course meal. Basically it?s good but not worth what they charge. I really still can't see how they justify their prices but it is LA and many things get by on image and good-press alone.

Horrible, we were not warned that the "romantic outdoor setting" was for smokers. The close seating was a huge problem if you were a non smoker; they should say something ahead of time because I had a woman?s cigarette smoke in my face the whole time. It didn't matter how good the food was at all if we couldn't smell it. We also specifically asked the waiter to split our main meal which was never done, they just made a fuss about the chef and ended up bring us a plate, making my husband look awkward and cheap, which was not the case after a $140 bill. It was so bad we boxed up our food and left. Very unprofessional! I see no reason to ever want to go back there again. How on earth was this place voted into the top ten most romantic restaurants? I understand the French can have attitude and do smoke but this is California! If you are a non-smoker and like to be treated with dignity then stay far, far away!

We had a reservation for 4 for Saturday night (Valentine's Day weekend no less!) and after reading some of the reviews and comments about bad service I was a bit nervous. But we couldn't have had a nicer experience! They were able to accommodate my last minute request to add a 5th person, and even though it was solidly booked and they needed our table for the 8:30 reservations, we didn't feel at all rushed. The atmosphere was incredibly warm and inviting; we sat in the blue room which has a lovely gas fireplace and beamed ceilings.

The food was really very good. I split the roasted beet salad appetizer with a companion and had the monkfish for an entree. Both were really tasty; the beet salad in particular was incredibly beautiful and vibrant in color and texture; with just the right amount of goat cheese to balance the earthiness of the roasted beets. The fish was cooked perfectly; not overdone or dry at all.The wine list was truly impressive, although most of it was beyond our financial reach. They did have some decent selections by the glass, but it would have been nice to see some more selections by the bottle under $40. Or rather, ANY selections under $40.

The wait staff was very friendly and competent, if not top notch. There were some small details that were overlooked that one would expect dining at a top-end restaurant; for instance, although the waiter knew we were splitting a salad, we were presented with the salad and a second empty plate for us to divvy up amongst ourself; a truly top-notch restaurant would have split the salad for us before bringing it to the table. Its a small detail to be sure, but there were several moments like this throughout the meal that would have bumped my rating to 5 stars.

Yes it is very expensive and definitely going to be a "special occasion" place for us. I'd like to see a better selection of wine under $40, and if you don't like smoke, you may want to avoid the patio. But I'd definitely go back!

We (3)made a reservation for a Tuesday night. This rude waiter pushed us to order both appetizer and main course altogether b/c he NEEDED the menus back (it was not even a busy night). He did not provide us the drink menu. Poor busboy came to put a bread and dip on our table, the waiter held his hand tight shoutain at him NOT NOW and the busboy took the bread back. We asked if you serve any cocktail drinks and he said" HAVE U JUST ARRIVED to California?! you need a license for that!!Now, this rude hostess came and pulled our extra chair without asking or saying any apology word! The waiter could not read the menu when we showed him this food and said he doesn't have his reading glasses with him so he went to put it on but he came back the same and said read it to me. We read it for him he couldn't hear us said what! Which? With an attitude. We complained to the manager the next day and they finally agreed to give us $100 gift certificate (we spent around $400). We went to see the owner and he was the worst. He said that he didn't believe us since this is the first time complain!!Now, i am reading the reviews and see how many unhappy people complain about their HOrriBLE AttiTude, i can see who is lying and he offered $100 certificate (how come you don't believe us and want to give us $100). We said only $100? he said he won't give us $100 and he changed his mind! FORGET ABOUT ANY APOLOGY.....
WASTE of MONEY, TIME, and NEVER EVER go there again. After i saw that rudeness from the owner, i can see why the waiter was so rude...THIS OWNER TRAINS ALL OF THEM...PLEASE DON'T Get TRICKED BY THE AMBIANCE..YOU WILL NEVE HEAR SORRY FROM THESE Obnoxious PEOPLE. PLEASE READ OTHERS COMPLAIN TOO...

Pros: Nothing when the customer service is horrible

Cons: Rude People

The ambiance and food are fantastic, which is a shame considering the less than impressive customer service. If you choose to dine here, be sure to double check that your bill was calculated correctly - and then pay close attention to your credit card statement to see that the right amount was charged. Truly a disappointing (and inconvenient) experience.

My husband and I celebrated our 1 year wedding anniversary at The Little Door. Unfortunately, it will be an anniversary that we will never forget due to a getting sick from the food. I had the salmon special that my husband ended up finishing for me. He had the lamb which I did not taste. Since we were both sick then we believed that it must have been my salmon dinner. When I called the restaurant the next day to let them know so that they could look into it and make sure that no one else gets sick, I was told that the manager would call me back. Unfortunately, no one called me back which made me even more sick with disgust that this restaurant not only made us ill, but couldn't even given me the courtesy of returning my call. I called again a few days later and requested to speak with the owner, within minutes the manager got on the phone and said that she hadn't returned my call because she was counting how many salmon were sold. Guess it takes days to count 24 salmon? When she called back to tell me how many salmon were sold, she insisted that no one else were sick and that it must have been something I ate elsewhere. When I told her that I hadn't had anything else to eat, she asked "are you sure about that?" I couldn't believe that now this person was implying that I were lying. This has led me to write this negative review, not because of how sick we got, but because of how poorly and disrespected I was treated by the management. At the end of the day, a simple apology and an insurance that they would investigate the matter would have made all of the difference. And that is how my husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary.

This restaurant is really beautiful and the setting is very warm and romantic. The food is very good as well, though a little overpriced. I have been here a handful of times and they consistently disrepect their own reservation times and have customers wait at their crowded bar. Keep this in mind when you go because it seems to be a regular policy. The ambiance and staff emits a very Euro-feeling, for better or worse depending on your own preferences. There were even smokers which are hard to find in LA.

Pros: beautiful setting

Cons: French attitude

I just got so annoyed reading the last few reviews. This restaurant is beautiful, it's usually busy, but that's a good thing. I've never felt like the tables were too close together; since when was a restaurant being popular a bad thing? My first guess is that the people complaining are the kind of people that shouldn't be in there in the first place. They have no idea what they're eating, and expect to have a waiter kiss their a** for ordering $50 dollars worth of food and lingering around like they ordered $500.

My boyfriend and I have been going there once or twice a month for the past couple of years for a reason. The food is delicious, and everyone I know raves about the desserts. I love how the atmosphere and service is classy and fun rather than fussy and stiff. I also think we've had every waiter in the restaurant at least twice and... not a single one had a "fake french accent" why would anyone do that??? Some of them are from European countries OTHER than France though, maybe that got you confused?

In conclusion. For those of you who aren't going to feel put out by a $200 dollar tab, know what good food is, and don't mistake fresh organic produce for canned beans.... you will love it! The new Zagat gave it an amazing review by the way.

Pros: A door guy to prevent MOST of people who shouldn't be there from... being there.

Cons: Hmmm.... I wish they had Vodka! But I can just sneak my own in!

.

I will keep this brief:

1. Our waiter didn't seem too concerned about service. We wanted to order an appetiver and then order our entrees after it arrived. He told us that we could not do that, everything HAD to be ordered at one time.

2. Some of the ingredients on the plates were clearly canned. On $40 entrees?

3. One dish: seafood, was so salty as to be nearly inedible.

4. The dessert, a peach "tart" appeared to be made of thin slices of peach and jam, with a pastry base that you would expect from a high school home-economics class. It was served with..... Breyer's ice cream. Wha? On a $12 dessert?

5. The only non-alcoholic beverage they had were bubbly water and diet coke. They were out of bottled iced tea and lemonade. Bottled iced tea and lemonade? Is this a deli?

6. And the couscous was really lackluster.

Ok. Dinner for two, with one glass of wine and one bottle of bubbly water, including tip, was $170. You can do much much better for that kind of money. Yes, it's a very cute courtyard but.....

My fiance and I went there to celebrate our 3year anniversary. Dont get me wrong the food was great (except the appetizers,,,,not good) our soup was great, the steak was great but the waiter had an attitude. We have asked to send back our apperizer (which the waiter had recommended) and they wouldnt take it back. We asked to speak to the manager, and even the manager was rude, but he took it back. At the end we have found out that they just took our appetizer back without taking it out of our bill. We have talked to the manager again and he said that he would not do it because no one in ten years had send that specific appetizer back.....To make the story short we told the manager that he is rude and this place has no customer service. He eventually took it off of our bill,,,but that was not the point. We didnt care to pay $44 for that appetizer it was just the principal. We will never go back there, and we dont recommend this place to anyone. VERY RUDE!!!!

Step into another world, this is a stunningly beautiful candlelight patio abuzz with people until late in the night. Make sure to make reservations. I only got mine at 9:45 on a saturday evening- neverthless the food did not suffer, it was delicious, marvellous, almost impeccable. monkfish wrapped in bacon, gnocci with roquefort sauce, wow, they have a top notch chef working back there. And for that high price, i demand the food be that good, but was happy to find out that it was worth the splurge. Highly recommend for a special occasion!

We went to the Little Door for my birthday & the food was outstanding. Unfortunately the quality of the service did not match the quality of the food.
It took the waiter 10 minutes to approach our table, another 20 minutes for the wine to arrive, and then we didn't see him again for about an hour and a half. The busser did the majority of the work (bringing our food, refilling our water, asking if we wanted more wine). When the server re-appeared to take the dessert order, I was in the restroom. My dining compainon asked that he come back when I was at the table & it took him another 20 minutes to materalize. After we had eaten dessert & had coffee, it took another 30 minutes to get our check. This was after I went sprinting after him to flag down our check.
I have never had such a bad service experience.

I cannot recommend Little Door enough for any dining circumstances! I would go there with my parents; I would go for a romantic date; I would go for a casual meal with a friend. With its beautiful indoor and outdoor seating you can't get a bad table. Our handsome waiter could not have been friendlier or more helpful. The menu displays great variety (important if you're a vegetarian like me), and the dishes were clearly made with fresh, quality ingredients. The seemingly small portions will really fill you up (I definitely took some home). I will go back again and again!

I just had dinner here last night. Quite a crowd for a Sunday night, which is a good sign. The food was excellent! We shared the black mussels and beet salad as appetizers (both were great). I also recommend the scallop dish for an entree. I have to say I really liked the ambiance. Candles on every table, very romantic. I ended up staying there longer than I had planned on!

I usually dread eating out on Sat. night in LA, however this place was great. A bit crowded, but to be expected. Food was great, (wild salmon, my date had the lamb--which I got a few chops on my plate, that was great as well) waitperson was just okay, he had a bit of an attitude (looked like an aspiring actor--not sure if he was really French or not). Doorman was also full of attitude. The front desk girl was the best! Very attentive and updated us on our table while we sat at the bar. Overall, I loved the place.

My bf took me here for dinner. It was so cute! You have to sit outside by the fireplace - prob. the best seat in the house. The outdoor seating feels like ur sitting in a garden. I honestly dont remember how the food. But I do remember thinking it wasnt too bad and the prices were reasonable.

I had been looking forward to going to Little Door for some time, and sadly, I think I built it up too much in my mind. The dining room was so cramped I could almost eat off of the plates at the tables on either side of me. For how expensive the food is, it wasn't mindblowing in any way. The dishes were fresh tasting but not exotic or exceptionally delicious. There are many other restaurants at this price range in town that are better.

The food here is really great, the atmosphere is lovely. Our waiter was adorable and very good- and the wine was superb. We had oysters to start, I had a lovely john dory fish (which I'd never had before) with a peachy sauce that was just wonderful. My BF had the filet which was gone in mere moments it was so tasty. The patio was very romantic, and their wine list was great. I can't find a single thing to complain about in the whole experience.

We had a very pleasant preliminary experience at the Little Door. The food was creative, tempting, and extremely satisfying. The wait staff was attentive and prompt. The crowd was eclectic and pleasant. Unfortunately, things went downhill from there. They ran out of coffee which had disastrous on our after-dinner smokes. As the crowd left, the restaurant grew progressively colder and much to our shock and chagrin, once the fine, white, crisp linens were removed from the tables, we were horrified to see brightly-colored, poorly constructed, sticky, clown tables. This shock to the system was surpassed only by the flood on the women's restroom floor. Talk about a disappointment! Instead of exiting the restaurant with spirits high and bellies full, we left with wet feet!

All and all while we would recommend the Little Door, there are some minor matters which require attention before we can rate this a top-notch dining experience.

I'll boil it down to the basics...Very good food....very nice setting.....horrrible, snotty staff and service. But if you're on a date it at least gives you somehting to talk and even perhaps laugh about. Remember- you have the last laugh- a tip is a reward, not a right-for good service!

Walking through the little wooden doors into a gorgeous courtyard and cottage style house, made me feel like I was privvy to some type of wonderful secret. The whole atmosphere is so incredibly cozy, that I immediately felt like this was somewhere that I could really relax and enjoy a nice meal. My fiancee took me their for our anniversary and the staff was sooo accomodating. They actually took us around to the different areas of the restaurant so that we could decide where we wanted to sit. We ended up in the back room, complete with fireplace and rustic, charming decorations. The service was impeccable, the food amazing. I really was completely thrilled with this place. If you want a lovely outdoor setting complete with twinkle lights and true ambience, don't walk....RUN to the Little Door. This place is a must try.

Food is good, tasty and light, nice menu selections, some great, some OK. Service is horrid, always very late to seat you, even with reservation, and I hope you like where they seat you since it is like climbing Everest to change you seats. Food arrives late and portions are fairly small. Some seats are not comfortable and most times you are touching elbows with the French guy sitting next to you (This could be actually fun). The price is usually high to very, very high. I guess OK for a very special occasion, but forget it for just having dinner.

i called in advance and got reservations at 9:30 and we where seated at 10:30, even though there were two tables open but since we were only two people and the tables that where open where for four people we weren't allowed to sit on those tables. and if your not french they treat you very rude, a few people walked in talked to the hostess in french and got a seat immediately. another thing that ticked me off was all the people that were waiting got a sample glass of wine on the house for waiting but we didn't. food was great no complaints but not worth the hassle of waiting for it and getting yourself ticked off about it

We arrived without a reservation on a Tuesday night. We were told it would be about a 10 minute wait for two (which was good) and we sat at the bar. After about 25 minutes I inquired with the hostess who seemed surprised to see me - despite the fact that we were seated 15 feet away from her stand.

The menu is quite adventurous, although many of the items looked familiar to fare we've had elsewhere from a famous French chef, not in L.A.. Since L.A. is not a "chef driven" city, we can't blame them for a bit of recipe poaching.

Service is where this place really fell apart. Our waitress was friendly but slow to greet us. While we brought our wine from the bar, it was a good ten minutes before we had water, which was later refilled only after being completely empty for several minutes. We ordered two entrees and discussed the cheese plate as a better dish afterwards (than before). The food was very good, although my tuna was far more than seared. At one point I had no wine and no water and when I got up to find the server, she was casually enjoying an espresso at the server station. I'm glad she had something to drink.

After a busser gathered and boxed our food, the server came by with the dessert menu written on a chalkboard, plunked it on an empty chair and looked at us, not even saying a word. In fact, the server never said much of anything. She never went through specials and she held a freakin' chalkboard to sell us dessert. No thanks.

Service should be outstanding for these kind of check averages. Instead, it appears The Little Door is content to rest on it's laurels. It's very, very popular - why should they give a damn? We considered complaining but as long as people keep paying those prices and the lines stay long, they have no reason to change.

If you think this place has good service, you've dined in L.A. too long.

Our two glasses of wine and two entrees, with tip, were ~$135.
