I have been taking my cats to Critter Care for 14 years. I have taken feral cats, stray cats and also my own house cats. Dr. Portugal has always treated my animals very professionally, even the ferals and strays that I have had to bring in. She treated one of my cats who had asthma and diabetes. To help me save money, she taught me to give this cat injections so I wouldn't have to bring him in for shots every three weeks. With her care, this cat lived over 7 years, which he wouldn't have considering he had both conditions simultaneously. She has always been compassionate and kind when I have had to euthanize any of them for cancer, feline leukemia, stroke, emphysema and other terminal diseases. She even met me at her office one Sunday night at 11:00 p.m. to treat my asthmatic cat who would have died from the severe asthma attack he was having. I have never had a problem getting an appointment when my cats were sick and her diagnosis has always been correct. Her staff have always been very polite to me especially Tara and Teresa. Each time I have been in her waiting room, the people I met there were very happy with her service. Many of them have been bringing their animals to her for years. One man who moved away drove the distance just to have her take care of his dog. I would recommend her and have recommended her in the past.

I'm sorry but the positive reviews here are extremely hard to believe that they were written by actual satisfied customers who were happy with "Dr. Lori Portugal" and her staff service. I just cannot believe that. If they were written by authentic clients and not shills, then they either have extremely low expectations or need their head examined. Seriously.

The staff that is employed there are so rude it is jaw dropping. They all need attitude adjustments, maturity and a course on human decency. Clearly they have no regard for clients and act as if they're doing you a huge favor since you're bothering them. Smacking your lips while blowing huge bubblegum bubbles is so unprofessional. Screaming to persons working in the back because you are to lazy to get off the seat is also unprofessional.

But by far the worst is this Doctor person, Lori. Oh badness (not goodness). Where in the world do I begin with this colossal narcississt? She will talk at you instead of to you. She is not discreet whatsoever in what she says and everyone in the waiting room will know what is being said to you. Nothing is private because you're not treated as a customer, nor is your pet, you're treated as someone who should be grateful to be in her good graces. What "good graces" though? And despite what they may claim as far as welcoming any reviews, both good and bad, this is untrue. Lori will try to censor you from exposing the truth by acting as a bully, using even more unprofessional tactics. Also, if you do use her services and pay using plastic, watch your statements. I have also heard several people claim that she has sued them.

Lori would like for you to believe that it is nothing wrong with her, but rather something wrong with everyone else. Classic narcissist. But what is the one common denominator in all the complaints? Lori, that's who!

I know they read these comments periodically so let me just say this. You will not censor people, Lori. You will never successfully shut people up about you and your horrid staff and business. Ever! I hope that is clear to you. No lawyer, no statement, no piece of paper, nothing. You don't intimidate anybody, Lori.

Critter care is an honest and compassionate vetrinary practice. Dr P has treated our family's pet from chinchillas to mastiffs. They do a great job!

We've used Dr. Portugal for some years, beginning with a hedgehog and ""graduating"" to cats, so we have come to have great faith in her. She takes care of our ""well kitty"" visits, and had already proven her worth when a stray cat we took in a few years ago who had serious problems was brought around to be healthy and strong again and lives a very ""privileged"" life now!

Our latest experience was with our daughter's cat who we were babysitting and who began to lose weight at an alarming rate, was throwing up several times a day, was not his usual loving self. After examination and testing, Dr. Portugal correctly diagnosed pancreatitis, which condition also involves the liver. It's only now that we know just how grave his situation was, but over the last four months in Dr. Portugal's expert care, he has gradually turned the corner to being a healthy kitty once again. We are close to not having to medicate any more!

Dr. Portugal is kind, has a heart for animals and their well-being, will go the extra mile and beyond, is extremely knowledgeable, and has a refreshing way with owners and animals alike. Likewise, her staff is welcoming, warm and personable. We'd say Critter Care is a Thorndale treasure!!

horrible vet!!! Long story short... took my dog there for vomiting, was told she had pancreatitis... (treatable), was told she would be fine. The next day i went to visit, was told her kidneys were shutting down, but would get a medication ordered to help with that... it was a reaction to the first medication given for pancreatitis. By the third day, i went in to visit (unannounced) and was looked at like i had three heads. When they brought my dog out, she was so swollen and wouldn't even look at me... The employee who walked her out (we knew personally) and their comment to me was, "between me and you, i would get your dog out of here, take her somewhere else". We did right then and there, ended having to put her down that night at the other vet.... Her body had started shutting down... She was only 2. The bill was through the roof..... i was making small payments... and still got threatening letters. This was just one experience... All the times before, the exams were done in the waiting room, i was told every time that my dogs had fleas.... i never saw any, nor did any one in my house see or get bit.... also told my dogs teeth were bad... Everytime i went in there I left feeling like a horrible pet owner...

If you love your pets do not take your animal to Critter Care located in Thorndale, PA. I took my cat there on Friday and they gave me all the medicine to give to him. I spent over $300.00 that day. When I woke up the next day the cat had died. This is the worse veterinary hospital in the Chester county. They should have kept him over night. My animals now go to Animal Clinic which is also located in Thorndale,PA and they are the best.

Giving it a 1 star is to much. I took my outside cat to her in aug 2010. She said the teeth all had to be removed due to infection in the gums and rotten teeth. End of Nov he stopped eating, after telling her his symptoms she treated him for sinus infection, We kept taking him back with no improvement and she kept giving him more meds. Not once did she mention that it could be coming from infection in his gums. On 1/5/11 I found him bleeding from the mouth, took him to another vet where she noticed sweeling and said the blood was coming from his K9. This vet only saw him once and knew right away where the problem was coming from. Did Lorie Portugal know that this was coming from gum infection due to the k9 that she left in his gum ?? I think so. I then took him to a specialist where I was told his gums were full of infection and some teeth were just broken off at the gum line. ( We were shown pictures inside of his mouth clearly showing the teeth and the pockets of infection. It was so bad that I had to have him put down.
If you love your pet, STAY AWARE FROM CRITTER CARE!!!!!!!!!

Giving this place 1 star is being kind!
Worst ever....Bogus bills, and lawsuits. That's her practice, rip you off and sue you. Wonder if anyone ever been successful in an appeal?? Somehow I doubt it, but I will be looking into it for sure.

I do not know how this woman keeps a legitimate practice. That place is a pig stye and she should have her license revoked!! I sat in the waiting room while she examined a cat which proceeded to urinate on the floor. She wiped it up with a cloth from her pocket.....I walked out and would STRONLY recommend others follow suit.

This Vet is mean and downright cruel. She tries to rip you off on the bill and has a dirty smelly environment. Dr. Lorie Portugal should have her practice closed for her bad treatment to animals as well as people. It is a wonder who would write a glowing report about this "Vet" ever?
I have heard multiple stories of people she tries to sue about their bill. She killed my dog!!! I heard I am not alone, someone should look into her death records...
After getting my dogs records back, which they did not want to give me, I was sued as well, for a bogus bill.

I feel for all the reviews I have read about Critter Care, so I went with my guard up. Take what everyone says about the smell VERY true!!! (wow, that's one bad smell) After calling around to other Vets, they had the price that fit to get 'Romeo' fixed. He's also known as "gimpy" because was missing about 3 inches of his back foot. This was causing him to be in such pain because of what I thought were ingrown toenails. Long story short, in one short work day Romeo had his manhood taken and his foot repaired. It's 3 weeks later and he's back to being his playful kitty self. It was worth the 30 min drive from Phoenixville!

I have had several bad experiences with this vet clinic. First of all I am a graduate from CAT Brandywine, animal science and technology. I am currently attending delval and I am working to become pre vet. So i know a thing or two about animals and animal care.
My first experience occured when i took my dog in because he suddenly lost about half his body weight. when i took him in the vet treated me like some kind of animal abuser. He kept making comments about starving my dog and not changing his water bucket enough because his weight lost was due to him drinking stagnant water (which took to overnight stays to figure out) in my defense i didnt know my dog was drinking stagnant water he must have been drinking the water from out pound. He was fed everyday and had 30lb bucket of clean water provided everday. after she medicated him he didnt act like himself. He put all the weight back on but he was having a hard time moving around (he was 10) so we took he back looking for answers. The doctor said he had arthritis (okay thats possible) she medicated him and the meds worked like magic, however what we didnt know was that what she prescribed him was a new med still being tested and it caused my dogs spine to fuse together. he had to be put down, my dad was on his way to the clinic to say goodbye to Chaos, he was 45 minutes away. the doctor said she cant wait she has a meeting and she was giving us 5 minutes to say goodbye because she was going to be late, my dad never got to say goodbye.

A Second experience occured when i was in high school and had to pick someone to job shadow. like many of the comments i read before they wouldnt let me in the back of the clinic and i wanted to know what went on behind close doors. as soon as i arrived they took me back, the vet tech told me to stand in the corner and stay out of the doctors way. I then was watchin her fix a puppy. after she removed both testes i asked her what she does to dispose of them. she said we throw them at people, she threw both testicles at me one landed on the computer screen and on on the key board directly next to me. when she was done with the puppy she layed him on the floor to recover. (WHAT THE HELL!?) after that i saw a german shepard, veryyy skinny and on a short lesh attached to the hindge of a door. The vet tech told me not to tough that dog, (the dog was begging for some human contact, i played with him and released him from the door, they were pissed off at me) the vet tech then said "instead of making a mess of everything y dont u make urself useful and hold this cat) im not sure what was wrong with the cat but it was having a hard time breathing. after 30 minutes the cat started to go limp in my arms, i immediately got someones attention. they had forgotten about the cat and blamed me for having the cat out of their sight. (i was standing in the exact same spot by the german shepard) i was suppose to complete 8 hours of shadowing. i left after 3 hrs and on my way out i pulled my 6 dogs, and 2 cats records.
on a positive note, she is the reason i am striving to become a vet, patients and clients should never be treated the way this place treats people. On top of everything the whole clinic smelled awful and the staff was untrained. Being young isnt a bad thing im pretty well trained and im 18 yrs old so i wouldnt judge by age, however you can tell how comfortable one is who is expereiced and who isnt.
I hope my experiences help spread the word about critter care. make the right desicion!!

I have been taking my 4 cats and 1 dog to Critter care for the last 7 years and highly recommend their service. The staff are friendly and seem to care for all my animals; whenever I take my dog she gets so excited and happy to see that staff. I know that Dr. Portugal's approach is a bit unorthodox and that some people find it odd, but I think she is great with my animals. She is understanding with large vet bills and is willing to work with you. I think the world of her and wouldn't go to any other vet.

I have dealt with Critter Care for many years now. I have mixed feelings about the clinic. I first started going their with my parents dog. She has never had a problem and even seems to enjoy the visits. On the other hand my parents have had her boarded there several times during vacations and she always seems to come out with some type of infection. I took my cat there for her de-claw and I must say that they did a really good job. She was back on her feet in less than a day with little side effects. When I take her their for annual check ups the assistants there seem to be a little rough with her. I warned them that she does not like to be held (especially by strangers), but the assistant took her right out of her carrier and was holding her up while she hissed and growled. He acted like he knew my cat better than I did. Then the assistant was upset when the cat peed and pooped on him because she was scared.

We took our cat to this vet. The place was totally disorganized. We go to a ver because we expect a clean environment and for the vet to peform the exam and shots. Well, we so the vet initially come out and give some womans dog shots on the floor of the waiting room - which seemed a little odd. Next, as we were waiting for the vet to call us back to an exam room some high school kid came out with a needle and nail clippers and tried to pull our cat out of the cage in the waiting room. I told him no way because we didn't want our cat to bolt out the front door and second he was not a vet nor did he look trained.

We were then told to give them our cat and wait. Again, I said no way we were going back with her. After 5 heated minutes of this back and forth they reluctantly let us go to an exam room. At this point the vet proceeded to tell us that our cat had tooth decay and a gum infection and that she would need teeth pulled. Well, that was it for us. We got the rabbis shot and left and took her to two other vets for a follo-up on her teeth - BOTH VETS STATED HER TEETH WERE FINE. Her teeth are still fine.

The place smelled, the staff was awful, the vet was rude and unprofessional and I think (in my opinion) that she wanted to pull the teeth for the cash and could have cared less for our cat. I would never recommend that anyone go to this vet - even in an emergency.

My wife and I have been going to Dr. Lorie Portugal since we got our first cat some 10 years ago. I'm not sure what vet some of these reviews are talking about, but it's certainly not Dr. Lorie! I'll admit, some may not like her style, but I think it's much more relaxing for both the patient and his/her "parents" to be seen in the wide open front area, rather than a small examination room.

Not only does she remember each of our cats' names (all 4 of them), she remembers details of our personal lives as well (including a visit right before my wife gave birth to our son). You don't feel like just another patient when you're there.

Finally, recently, one of our cats ate some leaves on a lily plant, and we were concerned that they might be poisonous. We called the office to see if they were open so we could ask about it, but they were closed. So we called the emergency number on the message, and Dr. Lorie herself answered. Now that's dedication. (The cat is fine, by the way.)

I have read and reviewed everything everyone has said about Critter Care Vet Hospital. Some I love and some I disagree with! Personally I have been a client of Dr. Portugal for 6 1/2 years. My animals love her and she always greets them like their her own kids! She also saved my dogs life without the cost of thousands of dollars. The price was very affordable. The staff was also kind and I love the family style atmosphere how Dr. Portugal comes right out and sits on the floor with your pet! I truley believe she is a great vet with a great staff behind her!

Dr. Lorie Portugal is a brilliant surgeon with a very busy practice. Upon entering the facility, you'll notice an entire wall of tear-jerking photographs, thank you notes, cards, and letters from grateful pet owners. I'm not on that wall, as I never thanked her via "the written word"; so when I ran across these reviews, I decided to share my gratitude here instead.

Two of my precious felines had life-changing surgery at Critter Care, with zero complications in both cases. After methodic testing, and careful consideration, their quality (and quantity) of life was returned to them. I smile, and think of Dr. Lorie, every time I see them jumping, playing, and chasing imaginary friends and foes; something they were no longer able to do before surgery. At times, they appear "out of nowhere" so suddenly, I'm sure they have a molecular transporter hidden around here somewhere; but that's a story for another time and place.

I should have known from the smell when I first walked in but I had no choice. My friend had to cancel last minute and my flight was leaving later that evening.

My poor white dog was filthy when I picked her up. I was only gone for four days. She still had food left over and poop was caked to her bottom. It was disgusting. I felt like a bad mother. They say they walk the dogs for a long distance, even showed my how long, but that's not what I observed. I arrived early and saw them taking the dogs out for there scheduled walk (as told to be by the staff) so I parked across the street. Long walk...NOT. They walked for a three minutes (I timed it) and brought the dogs back.

I will never take my dog back there again.

Brought my Scottish Terrier there for boarding Friday night through Monday morning. She gets fed twice a day-- 3 oz servings each time. Her boarding stay meant six, 3 oz meals which I provided in indivdual packages in a plastic container displaying the feeding instructions. When I picked her up Monday morning there were 2 packages left. They had not fed her twice during her stay!! Should have figured they couldn't handle it since it appears most of the hands-on care seems to be done by people barely out of (or possible still in) high school. Never again!

The people are rude and very unprofessional especialy the receptionist..The vet talks to you like your an idiot..and when our dog passed away while under thier care which may or may not have been able to be prevented we went in to pick up our deceased beloved pet so that he could be buried by the family imagine the horror we and our children felt when we opened up the bag to put him in his grave and IT WAS THE WRONG DOG!!! We had to go back with another families beloved pet thawing out in the back of our car in the summer heat to get the right one.So when we refused to pay the remaining $75.00 we were sued by her.

My cat has never tolerated going to the vet. He's hissed and scratched the two previous ones I've taken him to, and nearly bit one. But when I started taking him to Dr. Lori, he actually lets her hold him without much fuss. I love how she meets with the pets right in the waiting area--sitting right on the floor with them. She has a wonderful "bedside" manner with animals and definitely knows her field.

Dr. Lori Portugal sits on the floor with her patients, the critters, and calms them down with expertise and her own aura of patience. She knows her stuff and the animals love her for it (as do their owners). She is not the closest vet, but she is so much nicer than the others I've used that it's worth the extra minutes of driving with my cat howling away next to me in the car.

I have been taking my dog to Dr. Lori Portugal for many years. My dog is very difficult to deal with and gets aggressive when in her office. She has always been very good with him and I am so thankful that she understands how he is and is able to treat him. Her staff is very young and yes, it seems like there are always new people there, but I think it is because the business is growing so fast so she needs to hire people on a regular basis. I also know that she brings in students who are learning and are enrolled in an animal care class at CAT Brandywine. Dr. Lori gets down on the floor to examine your animal and doesn't hide anything from the "animal parents." She is not the kind of vet who does things behind closed doors. I like this quality in a vet. I would recommend Dr. Lori, especially if you have a dog who bites or is terrified to go to the vet.

I thought the people including the doctor were very rude and did not seem to care for the animals. The employees do not seem to be certified to perform many of their tasks and they are very young. I have heard them shouting at the dogs for barking, when it isn't there fault. My question to them is, if the animals get so untolerable, why do you work at a vets office?

I would not reccoment this vet for many people. It is overpriced and they sell you things you don't need. They are not thorough and I wouldn't go back. The communication is poor and the staff is ever changing. I know of several people that have actually been in lawsuits with this vet. They do have flexible hours and an easy to reach location.

We brought our dog and cat here on several occasions, but we switched after realizing they weren't providing the best service possible. They rarely took our animals back to the actual office and would often give them shots and examinations right in the waiting area. While the vet seemed to be comfortable enough with the animals, she was almost a little too rough with them. My cat got sick and was throwing up after having his teeth cleaned here. I am not sure if this was normal or if it was something they did that was unusual. Although this vet is conveniently located along business Route 30, we now bring our animals to a different practice.
