Never been to the westheimer one but as for the one off MILAM in MIDTOWN- If I could give no stars I would... We thought the place was decent at first - until our party of 8 started talking and figuring out that the bartender (who was apparently the GM of the bartenders) was charging people different prices for the same exact drinks WITHOUT giving a receipt. When we confronted her about it she says that when one of us didnt tip on the FIRST DRINK that we ordered she started adding her own tip to the drink prices. When the owner was told of this by our group and he took her to the back and talked to her- she completely LIED about the whole thing and told him we had all not tipped her the entire night and told him we had had way more drinks than we had ordered up to that point to justify pocketing the money for herself (it was not even 12p). HELLO. With a party that large- usually tips are given at the end AND are usually QUITE generous- in our case anyways. THEN she proceeded to (very loudly and deliberately) tell all of the customers at the bar and the other bartenders/waitresses about it. BUT Needless to say we ALL closed our tabs and they WILL NOT be getting ANY of our (or our friends, coworkers, events, etc) business in the future.

A group of friends and i went to SPOTLIGHT KARAOKE for a birthday happy hour/party. When we arrived, at 6 pm, we were told it was a $5 cover charge without a reservation. We notified the man at the door that we were told 3 weeks ago that no reservation was needed if not in a private room. We were told that this was 'wrong' and we needed a reservation or had to sit at the bar. After paying our covers and asking the waitress Christi/Chrissy/Christina, she found us a table. We told her it would be about 10 people. Once at the table we asked about happy hour prices. We were told that there was no happy hour. We pointed out a sign on the table that said 'happy hour 3-8 pm'? She replied that that was at the midtown location. I was perplexed as to why they would have a sign on all tables saying happy hour at a different location! She also added that they dont not have draft, frozen drinks, and do not make mojitos. We then proceeded to ask drink prices. We were told the small drinks were $5, big drinks were $10. She then recommended the ""watermelon long island ice tea, Its so good and lots of alcohol"". I decided to order it. It was mediocre at best. We then asked for a food menu and were told that they do not serve food until 10:30 pm but if we wanted to go and eat somewhere, or have some pizza delivered, we could do that...so we proceeded to order pizza for delivery.\r
We ordered more drinks, start signing, and more of our guests arrived. At some point, one of the birthday girls says that one of our guests is not being allowed into the building because we have 'too many people in our party'. She spoke with the manager and was told that ""no, she cant come in"". I then went to speak to the manager, daughter of thebusiness owner. I asked what the issue was with our friend not being allowed in. She stated that we did not have a reservation and have all these people here. I told her that there were still open seats at our table. She then stated that all tables were reserved and people paid money to reservethem and we were over our limit... i then notified her that we all paid a cover charge to enter and are sitting in the common area so how is that different? Everyone at the table had purchased over the 2 drink minimum, so how is this now a problem? She then repeated that we have too many peopleand ""they (SPOTLIGHT karaoke) were over their limit"". I proceeded to point out to her that the main floor was less than 50% occupied, so how are they over their limit? She replied dont shout at me. I almost looked around to see who she was talking to because we were both speaking at the same level. She then repeated that she was not getting in. I asked her if the bar was reserved and she replied ""no. ""So why cant my friend sit at the bar?"" Her reply was because she is going to leave the bar and go over to your table"". I told the manager that everyone at 'the table' was buying drinks and paid a cover and if she was telling me that they (spotlight karaoke) are not trying to make money? She repeated that my friend was not getting in. I told her that if thats the case, then we all can leave, and she replied, ""Thats fine with me"". \r

This is my second time here. Not happy Prices are OVERPRICED! DJ has a very unpleasant attitude. He must be the owner's son or something. He acts like he doesn't want to be there and doesn't want to communicate with you. Had to wait a terribly long time to sing and room was not packed. On my second time out Female owner at the front was unnecessarily rood. I will not be back! was thinking about having my birthday party at a karaoke spot. It will not be here.

I have been a customer at Spotlight for 6 or more years. At one point, this was a very enjoyable spot. Now it's all about making money. Drinks are $ 8 and up and they are watered down. I spent $ 25 for not even an hour and its hard to get on the stage. The rotation is horrible. They tell you that you are in rotation ; however, people that walk in the door are seen on the stage even though you were in rotation 30 minutes ago. The DJ is usually rude and seems racist. So does Mr. Lees wife. Its like i frequent this place a lot however im not greeted as a frequent customer but like a stranger thats being watched to see if youre spending money every two seconds.. still you dont get on the stage if you do . This place is supposed to be a family owned business but not a family owned environment. Does anyone know of any other Karaoke hangouts. Im just hoping that another bar opens up soon. I don t feel appreciated at this one!

I've been to this place and thought it would be a good to have a gathering. I wanted to rent a room or make floor reservations and got the worst service. The rooms have minimum tabs and were booked, so no problem. I thought I would just invite a few girlfriends and reserve the floor. . So I print out the contract and reserve for 6 people and fax it in. Then I get an email saying they need my credit card info. When I call and remind them of what's on THEIR ""contract"" (that 10 or more must be confirmed prior with a credit card and oh, if you're not there before 10 pm they can still give your seats away), I get a blow off email saying people reserving for less than 10 and not showing up is hurting their business. Please... with the crowds and drink prices, I seriously doubt that. Get it together Spotlight or change your ""contract"" terms to reflect your business practices. So annoying. It's too easy to go elsewhere with way better service in this economy.

I do not call myself a ""regular"" ..but every time i go out with my girlfriends and get bored at a bar...we end up at spotlight. We always have a great time there, regardless if we are in a private room or outside on the main floor. sometimes, the KJ seems a little bit annoyed but i can understand, im sure all the customers have all asked him...""when is it my turn?"" sometimes people dont think, its about 4 mins song multipled by the amount of people (assuming everyone turned in a song)...then it would be my turn. its common sense. and the shots are huge! and the drinks are strong! i can go to slicks next door and have to drink 5 crown and cokes to get a good buzz when i can have 2 at spotlight. the drinks are at an average price of what it would be downtown. its not big deal because when people go out they should be looking to spend some money...if you are looking to spend next to nothing but want to get drunk, then stay at happy hour. this bar is also a great social scene. ive met so many different people here...from carlos lee to owen daniels to the plain old joe. i see everyones complaint on drink prices and blah blah...then IN MY OPINION... YOU should STAY AT HOME. quit crying and have fun! spotlight is a wonderful place to get drunk and sing some karaoke...and everyone knows karaoke is fun.

\r
Well I went to spotlight on Friday the 15th for a friends birthday party and had a decent time.\r
I had to leave early and forgot my credit card there. I have a total of 4 drinks and 2 shots. \r
they ended up charging my Card $59 dollars?>that comes out to $8 a drink.. Strip club prices at a Karaoke bar.... \r
\r
Will not be going back and will be disputing this charge as well.

I have been to this place several times and all I can say about the good reviews I have seen here is that if you like this place, you have NEVER been to a good karaoke show. The only reason I have been there more than once is that I am afoot and there are few shows to be found within walking/bus distance...that and trying to give people credit for occasionally having a bad day.\r
That having been said, every time, and I mean EVERY time I have been here,I have left early and angry. The bartenders are inattentive (even if you're the only customer in the place) and the KJ is sullen and rude to anyone who has the audacity to ask him todo his job. I have read other reviews here and suspect that may be because I never paid him extra for mere civility. He is,without a doubt, the rudest, most unhelpful KJ I have ever seen...and I have been to shows all over the southeastern US for the last 12 years or so.\r
As for the owner,I have met him exactly once and he was very friendly, not to mention a great singer. But the moment I politely voiced a complaint about the KJ he completely lost interest in speaking to me and I haven't seen him since.Honestly,I cannot fathom how this man stays in business. \r
As for the two drink minimum, that is insane. People who are there to sing, visit and generally cut loose are GOING TO DRINK! All setting a minimum does is irritate new customers who get enough of rules and regulations throughout the workweek. And punishing a designated driver by ridiculously overcharging for non-alchoholic drinks should be enough to put people off all by itself.\r
If you are looking for a fun, friendly place to ""cut up"" and sing a few songs,my advice is to keep looking. This is the worst show I have ever been to and I have been to many.

My friends and I really enjoy karaoke every once in a while, but Spotlight Karaoke is a last resort. The bar bill is always double what anyone would reasoanbly expect. The DJ is usually boring, and beyond that, has been pretty unreasonable by refusing to let more than one person at any table turn in a song at a time, even though there were only three occupied tables in the entire place (it was a Tuesday night), claiming that it gets confusing. Just about any other place that offers karaoke as an occasional or weekly feature is a lot more fun than this place.

Four of us went to Spotlight Karaoke last night, having never been there. We were absolutely not regulars, but the service was incredible!! It was a little daunting at first; all the tables had 'reserved' signs on them so we sat at the bar. We'd been there for about five minutes before Mr. Lee grabbed us and gave us a nice table up front. Yes, he gets up on stage and sings when he wants to... but so what!! It's his place, and he's very entertaining when he's up there. A lot of people get up and mumble, so you can't even hear them. He's really good, and does a great Frank Sinatra, as another reviewer mentioned. THERE WAS NO COVER. As for the two drink minimum, I don't know if they actually enforce that, but our table had no problem. We had about 5 - 6 rounds. I think the drink rule is a good idea; we saw a table of ten with about three drinks on the table. \r
\r
I almost didn't go due to the couple bad reviews, but I'm glad I didn't listen to them. Great fun, good sushi! I can't wait to go back.

At first I was kinda wiery going hearing some of the bad reviews such as rude staff and expensive drinks, but after checking it out myself, It was great! The staff was friendly, even the DJ who had all the negative reviews on here. Although when I first aprroached the DJ booth he was being rude to someone else, I then sat patiently waiting and to realize the other patron was being very rude. The drink prices weren't as bad as people hyped them to be on here. Very reasonable for a WESTHIEMER located bar. All I have to say is the people that complain about the drink prices they must not get out very often. As I sat waiting for my name to be called after an hr or so on a saturday packed house. The waitress kindly explained to me that they have a rotation of 20 something tabless and each table gets one turn times 4-5 mins a song. thats about an hr or 2 depending on how large a party is and blah blah blah. Surprisingly there was no cover charge. I asked the lady at the front door about the cover charge and they said they dont have one. That is is free, as long as there is a 2 drink minimum. She also explained why would she want a bunch of non-drinkers to take up all the space and karaoke time when that doesnt pay the rent, jokinly. Myself being in the serving industry totally understands. All I HAVE TO SAY IS THIS PLACE IS COOL, FUN, AND FAMILY FRIENDLY. AS FOR THE REVIEWS THEY ARE ALL RUBBISH, THERE WAS NO COVER CHARGE, THE DJ YES HE CAN BE RUDE, BUT IF UR TYPICALLY A PARTIER AND USE TO THE SCENE AROUND HOUSTON THEN YOU WOULD KNOW THE DRINKS ARE PRETTY CHEAP THEN ANYWHERE ELSE,IT SEEMS LIKE THE ONLY PEOPLE THAT SEEM TO BE COMPLAINING ON THIS IS THE CHEAP PEOPLE WHO WANT TO HAVE FUN FOR FREE! if you ask me... I thought the drinks were a lil strong! and the rotation was very long, but everyone gets there 5 mins of fame there.. its pretty cool!

Pros: THEY POUR HEAVY, THE PRICES ARE CHEAP, THE BARTENDERS ARE HOT, AND THERES A SUSHI BAR! and no COVER!

Cons: there is a wait to sing: its a pretty large venue, so each table gets a song times 20 somthing tables.. you do the math.

...I go to SPOTLIGHT to have a good time...and...it ALWAYS delivers!!!!\r
\r
...most of the time...I don't even sing...it's just the atmosphere...the friends...the hot bartenderettes...and hot waitresses...sorry Dr. J...the management...as well as the regulars...and the rest of the staff...\r
\r
...the DJs try to do their best to get on as many singers as they can...but...you can't please everyone...there's always that one...\r
\r

...I go to SPOTLIGHT to have a good time...and...it ALWAYS delivers!!!!\r
\r
...most of the time...I don't even sing...it's just the atmosphere...the friends...the hot bartenderettes...and hot waitresses...sorry Dr. J...the management...as well as the regulars...and the rest of the staff...\r
\r
...the DJs try to do their best to get on as many singers as they can...but...you can't please everyone...there's always that one...\r

Pros: ...the REGULATORS...and the NEW GUY....

I have been there twice. First time was great the owner was nice, and the karaoke was fun. Second time the lady at the door, supposedly the owner's wife would not let me in because I said I was not gonna buy any alcohol. Her exact words were I quote "" Why would I let you in if you're not even going to buy alcohol."" \r
I will never go in there again! Very rude and not good atmosphere for karaoke or fun. I do not suggest going there, unless you feel that you would like to be mistreated and thrown out. There are plenty of other karaoke places with much nicer service.

Pros: nice owner if HE is there

Cons: terrible service, rude staff, not a good atmosphere

For singing or just watching the train wrecks, you can't beat Spotlight Karaoke. The owners have created a friendly and fun atmosphere where anyone can be a superstar. Rarely is anyone booed or heckled, rather all are applauded just for having the nerve to take the stage. A massive song catalog, great service and fair drink prices will make you a regular in no time.\r
\r
Too shy for the main stage? You can book smaller private rooms. Hungry? Sushi G shows up on Friday and Saturday nights, and that G stands for Gosh Darn Good Sushi!\r
\r
Word to the wise, (and the impatient) the rotation gets long quickly. Don't expect to skip to the front just because you're new, you're a regular, or you've tipped well.

This place was a completely horrible terrible experience. My friends and I decided to drop off here for my bachelorette party to find an extremely rude DJ and owner who could care less. After patiently waiting for the DJ to finish chatting on his cell phone for several minutes he would hardly glance my way as I asked for a time estimate for a song request. When I questioned rather he had been speaking to me after he mumbled something under his breath he very clearly snapped that ?I needed to learn to listen.? When I replied back that he needed to learn to look at someone when speaking to them he became even moreunpleasant and very unprofessional. I won?t go into details and let?s just leave it at that. When we spoke to the owner he simply shrugged his shoulders and made excuses saying that the DJ could be having a bad day. I think we could all understand a bad day, but I think most of us would also understand we would have our behinds handed to us for acting in such a manner toward clients/customers. This was a bad decision on the owners fault considering that I took myself and about ten other girls out of his sausage fest packed club. However, girls don?t get too excited about the idea of a potential boy party because although I wasn?t personally looking for myself, plenty of my girls were and they were far from impressed by the sad looking bunch there. Overall if you want to karaoke I would recommend finding another place or singing your heart out along with your car stereo. At least this would save you the outrageous cost of their drinks.

Okay, so we paid $5 cover each and had to purchase at least two (way overpriced) drinks to even get into the rotation. This should be MORE than enough to get to sing? but now we?re expected to tip the KJ too, just to get up in a reasonable amount of time? THAT?S RIDICULOUS! No KJ should show favoritism to singers based on tips? As an EXPERIENCED karaoke singer I find this practice terribly offensive. There are plenty of good shows in town (with MUCH BETTER KJs and sound systems ? both at Spotlight are below average) that don?t expect you to do this.\r
\r
If that weren?t bad enough, while we sat and waited for our first turn to sing (it was moderately crowded) the owner, Mr. Lee, got up and sang... TWICE! Ugh! HELLO? YOU HAVE PAYING CUSTOMERS PATIENTLY WAITING THEIR TURN WHO DID NOT COME HERE TO BE PRE-EMPTED BY YOU!!! Karaoke 101: You take care of your CUSTOMERS FIRST, then IF it's a short rotation, you may sing at the tail end of it. When we approached Mr. Lee and complained about this, he got mad at us and told us to leave. I?m appalled and amazed that this dolt manages to run a business this way.\r
\r
The ONLY reason I ever go back to Spotlight is if a good friend or family member decides to have a party there (despite my advice)? My wish to celebrate with loved ones supersedes my desire to not patronize this place. \r
\r
But I still hate it.

Pros: parking, location

Cons: Terrible service... no regard for paying customers

Great place to go, and socialize. It gets busy and takes a few hours to get up sometimes but you can go on the weekdays if you don't like waiting to sing and sing all night long.

Pros: Tons of Karaoke songs to choose from.

Cons: Takes a while to sing on weekends

.

Staff is always friendly but will not suffer fools who get out of hand!! The owners Mr and Mrs Lee are very hospitable and like to get on first name bases with customers, the staff is friendly: It's the Cheeers of Karaoke, there are lots of regulars. Great song selection: I seldom run into a song I don't find. Drinks may be a bit pricey but consider it is located in the Galleria a high rent area: Usually I will budget $20 for myself and do Okay, so that will not deter me.

The first time I went, it was packed. We end up waiting over two hours only to find that there were at least 15 more people in front of us. We leave and decide to take the dj's suggestion to come earlier. The second time the same thing happens, and its not packed. If you want to sing it has nothing to do with what time you arrive. You need to throw around some money or know the employees. If you don't, be prepared to wait all night to sing one song. We noticed people filtering out because they are tired of waiting and bored. The food is horrible. There is a drink minimum to sing. If you're the designated driver be prepared to pay $4 for water or a small soda. Don't get on the stage to help your drowning friend. You will unknowingly forfeit your request.

This club has always been a great place to go and to sing but I am truly disappointed tonight. We have been regulars there for over two months, going two to three times a week. If you go and there is a party, expect not to get to sing, it seems that the KJ breaks every KJ rule. Money seems to get you moved up in the rotation. I personally was very patient and waited over 2 1/2 hours to sing and never got up. After watching people sing 2 or 3 times I questioned the KJ who told me that I was still 10 songs down. He admitted that a group had slipped him money to place them ahead in the rotation. I do not recommend you going to this karaoke bar. Actions speak louder than any words can say.

ya gotta be part of the spotlight family to really appreciate this karaoke bar. this means that you have to get to know everyone that is a part of the establishment, like waitstaff and bartenders and or owners, oh and other regulars. this makes the place more comfortable. next you gotta know how to take care of the staff, cause like in most places they wont notice you if your cheap. so dont be cheap, and that probably reflects on the people that get to sing more often than others. so if your waiting forever to sing... tip!! like most bars/clubs, your paying and tipping for atmosphere and service, that most likely your not getting at home, and if you are.... stay home!
oh, and dont go just for the sushi, if you want sushi go to uptown sushi, or something like that.

I will say that they do have an awesome song collection for karaoke purposes. Other than that, they are too expensive!!! I went last Saturday night, and the crowd is not very responsive to any of the singers, it was pretty much a yawnfest. $2.50 for a small rocks glass of diet coke? That's pretty lousy, especially for a designated driver...If you just want to go sing, remember there is a 2 drink minimum just to turn in a song.

I didn't care for the banner in the way of the singers at the Finals Contest. It hid alot of what the singers were trying to do to win the contest. The person that won the contest blew some lines and still won. Go figure. The bar is really nice though. The drink prices are too expensive.

My friends and I have gone to Spotlight at least a dozen times, and we almost always have a great time. They recently did some remodelling that resulted in a more polished look. Mr. Lee, the owner, is always on hand to perform Sinatra (well!) and to greet the guests, and if the right DJ is in the house, you'll be treated to a stirring introduction when he takes to the stage. One caveat: some DJs at this club are better than others at getting all the singers into the mix.
