After going to another vet for several years I ended up coming to Westside to have my dog's knee surgically repaired. She had a torn ligament.

I had several reservations about my previous vet already-older equipment, unfriendly receptionist, questionable competency of staff-and then I was referred by someone who saw my dog limping on West Cliff.

I can't tell you how happy I am to have made the switch. I initially saw Dr. Martinelli who was excellent. She diagnosed the torn ligament but then asked Dr. Shuman to come in and offer his opinion. She didn't prep him. He agreed with her diagnosis and added a few more observations. It was impressive to watch the whole hospital interact as a cohesive team.

Dr. Shuman took over from there as he works more with the surgical patients and he dropped what he was doing and sat with me for half an hour to explain what the problem was and what needed to happen in order to fix my dog's knee.

My dog is an eight year old German Shepherd cross. I love her dearly but know she can be a handful. The staff loved her!! Each member, as a matter of their own interest, took the time to pet her, scratch her head and give her love. It's hard for me to imagine this but she actually likes going there.

The surgery went very well. I was intrigued by how Dr. Shuman sets the whole surgery up. I brought Delli in the day before so they could put a pain patch on, put in her IV catheter and shave her leg. I opted to take her home and bring her back but he said I could leave her overnight and there is no extra fee.

The next day I dropped her off before they even opened. One of the nurses, Sue, came in early just so she could have time with Delli before working on her!!

The nurse explained how nearly fanatical they all are about pain control and how the goal is to have all the knee surgery patients sleep for the first 24 hours after surgery. On top of the pain patch Delli getting an epidural injection and an drip with pain control continuously.

I was called before surgery started so I knew she was fine under anesthesia, I was called after surgery finished to tell me all went fine, again a few hours later to keep me updated on her recovery and again in the evening to just let me know how she was doing. Their communications were wonderful. There is a night nurse there named Kiersten who was very sweet and very helpful with all my questions.

I took her home two days after surgery. I had tons of information, drugs for her pain, sedatives and most importantly, their phone number. On Saturday, the day after I picked Delli I called and Dr. Shuman got on the phone immediately after the receptionist got him. I apologized because I had a simple question but he was very happy to hear from me and was going to call me anyway in a short while just to check in.

This is a great veterinary hospital!!! I have since read several reviews on other sites and agree with all. Having come from another hospital that was less than professional I can only say I am extremely happy. Delli is very special to me and every person on staff at this hospital treated her as if she were their own. I can't thank them enough!
