The food at General Greene is exceptionally delicious, no question. The staff, for the most part, is friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. The service itself, however, is nonexistent. I've been to General Greene at least 6-7 times,

This has become my favorite place for food and drinks in Fort Greene. The food is always amazing and the service always excellent. It is definitely a place worth checking out if you are in the neighborhood.

This Fort Green restaurant serves American classics for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For brekfast, try one of their fresh-baked pastries. For lunch, a pressed sandwich. And for dinner, don;t miss the ham ans Gruyere bread pudding. Also, have a cocktail at their polished butcher-block bar.

Dorade was tasteless and dry. Potato salad "special" tasted like Key Food. Sugar beets were bitter and tough. Lemon chicken was touch and a mess of soggy bread crumbs. No bread was brought to the table (big pet peeve of mine with restaurants). The ice cream is good, but you can get that at the stand outside; don't bother going in.

Pros: good air-conditioning, ice cream

Cons: overpriced & unflavorful food

A perfect experience. The seating is comfortable, the staff was incredibly helpful and the food was delicious. Recommended: red quinoa, burgers, the mashed potatoes, deviled eggs, bacon, warm chocolate chip cookies and the Greene Collins cocktail. A good selection of vegetarian dishes were available. I look forward to going back.

Pros: Great food, great service

As some have mentioned, the atmosphere here is friendly and the staff is welcoming, but thats not enough for the price we paid. Regretfully, my Obama night out was a gastronomic bust. The featured sucking pig was unevenly cooked (if not under cooked) and under seasoned, as were the bland sweet potatoes. My stomach has been bothering all night. A shame.

Now, I've heard people rage about how great the General Greene is and I'm willing to give it a second chance, only because I live around the corner, but my friends and I had a terrible experience. We were all not in the mood to eat meat and when we asked for veggie options on the menu the waitress looked at us as if we'd asked for a macrobiotic plate at a steakhouse. She pointed to a couple of things we could order. (Unfortunately tasty things like the watermelon salad had chunks of bacon in it that we were told could not be extracted). My two friends ordered the baked potatoes, which sounded filling, and I ordered delivered eggs and a couple of sides. The "baked" potatoes were clearly microwaved and when they arrived we realized by "potatoes" they meant only one-half of one, already tiny, potato. When my dish arrived, we realized by "deviled eggs (3)" they meant three halves, not three eggs. Maybe this all would have been fine if the prices weren't astronomical. As it was, we left with a huge bill... and starving. We scarfed down slices of pizza from the joint across the street that's been in the neighborhood for 30 years. Maybe the menu has changed since our experience and the wait staff has gotten friendlier. I'm going to try again. I won't order the potatoes and my fingers will be crossed.

I went to the General Greene last night with a party of 8. We had made a reservation and our table was ready for us when we got there. The atmosphere is really nice, the lighting etc.. There was NO A/C!!! Or if there was, none of us could feel it. No fans, no open windows, just a very hot restaurant. Everyone arrived and we ordered our drinks. The drinks didnt arrive for 20-25 minutes!!!!! And when they finally did, 1 was missing! After waiting another 10 minutes for the missing beer, I got up and went to the bar to order the beer. We ordered our food and of course that took forever as well. Three of us ordered the grilled steak medium well, and it came out very pink. At that point we were tired of waiting so we unhappily ate it anyway. The steak was pretty good, except that we weren't happy with how it was cooked. Our friends got the pork meatballs, which tasted like baby food. Everyone who got salads were happy. They did bring us complimentary deviled eggs before our food came out, which were very tasty as well, though did not make up for the horrible service. And they only brought 6, when there were 8 people. Couldnt say how the desserts are because we all wanted out by the time that came around, though they did sound good.

Read the review in The NY Post a couple weeks ago, was intrigued. Had the iceberg wedge, twiced bake potato and the flank steak. Everything was cooked to perfection. Excellent meal. I thought it was rather cheap for the quality and quantity of the food. However the whiskey, which was the only one they had, Pogue I believe, was 11 dollars. I thought they should have a cheaper bourbon alternative. It was the best whiskey I've had in awhile, though.

Pros: Great Food, Good Prices

Cons: Baby Strollers

The food was actually quite good with southern/comfort food spin on tapas. But remember that with tapas, one may end up spending much more for a smaller amount of food. In any case, give it a spin and go with a few friends. Variety is the strong suit of any meal had at this restaurant. Great service too.
