The Overview
As the site of Atlanta's original downtown, the terminus of its first railroad, the fieriest of its Civil War flames, and the heart of its Victorian recovery, Underground Atlanta has the potential to be a premier historic site, but few tangible reminders of its history are left. The novelty of walking underground on old city streets is its best feature. Underground is also a good place to get your city bearings. The Atlanta Convention and Visitor's Bureau is located here, along with a half-price ticket booth. World of Coca-Cola, the Georgia state capitol, Turner Field, CNN Center, Philips Arena and Centennial Olympic Park are also short walks away.

The Experience

The street-level vendors create a festive feel with their city memorabilia offerings, and often special events will take over the mall's pleasant outdoor areas. At night, the bars and restaurants at Kenny's Alley stay open until the wee hours.

Key Points

  • Weekend Guided History Tour
  • Hot Urban Nightlife - 8 Clubs
  • Shopping, Dining & More

The Inside Scoop

  1. When to Go - Taking advantage of a loophole that allows establishments that serve alcohol to stay open until 4am, a host of new nightlife venues at Underground Atlanta stay open later than most in the city.
  2. The Extras - Park at Underground to board the Underground Atlanta/MARTA Braves Shuttle for a hassle free round-trip to Tuner Field.
  3. Save Money - AtlanTIX, Atlanta's only half-price ticket booth offers tickets for same day shows only. It's located on the upper level of Underground.

Underground Atlanta is not as safe as locals say!!

by Matt K.

The first (and last) time we visited Underground Atlanta, our car was broken into in broad daylight. We parked in an open parking lot caddy corner to Johnny Rockets at around noon on a Sunday to do some shopping before the Braves game. A thief broke into our trunk by somehow popping the lock and took my backpack of clothes, my girlfriends purse and her laptop. I actually happened to stumble across our ransacked stuff in the bathroom after they made off with a few little things in my backpack, her laptop, digital camera and Garmin GPS unit. We also felt very unsafe just walking around the Underground and there was even a guy being arrested for an unknown reason while we were there. I don't even care about the electronics that were stole, we were just extremely upset about the amount of pictures and personal information that were lost on the camera and the laptop, items that are priceless! I will avoid the entire Atlanta area at all cost from now on. We did however, go to Lenox Square in Buckhead for some shopping and it was very nice.

Underground Atlanta needs major improvement

by Didge O.

My 1st visit to Atlanta was in autumn 2007. My aunt & I were dropped off at The Underground by my local friends who recommended it to be "the place" to purchase souvenirs to take back home to Sydney, Australia. As tourists, we were disappointed to find out that most business's had closed and there weren't many choices of gift shops to browse & buy souvenirs plus there were limited choices of products available. We also felt unsafe there. It was too dark & not tourist friendly. I will be returning to Atlanta next week and I will ask my friends to take me elsewhere to buy souvenirs. I am not going back to The Underground. No doubt there are better places in and around the outskirts of Atlanta that have more variety of products to choose from and are safer areas to shop.

How disgusting!!!

by CSMobileUser

Ok...so my husband and a few of oufriends decided to go to underground atlanta for a change of scenery. Were from north florida. This place is disgusting...it should be burned...I will never come back..we spent maybe 15 minutes walking around when we realized there are crackheads everywhere! We had two black guys stop us...one asked us to buy him some drugs and the other wanted to dance and sing for us because quote"I'm a crackhead gone wild" really??? After that we looked around and the place is infested with black people!!! They all looked like druggies...there were no cops and it was only around 4 pm...I think there are to many disgusting blacks and they should just go into hifing...no body wants to see them or hear that they're a crackhead gone wild

Wow stay away

by jilmeri

We drove around the Underground part of Atlanta fully expecting to get out and do some shopping because several internet sites recommended this as a great historic shopping area. This was at 5 - 6 pm, not yet dark out. There was NO WAY we were about to get out of the car. I am serious, there was a very very dangerous vibe to this part of town. It was crowded, police everywhere, people cruising all over the street almost hitting us... NOT tourist friendly at all. The Atlantic shopping area is the way to go, outdoor layout and great selection of stores! Atlanta, you have to do something about the Underground - the dangerous 'vibe' was a big turnoff and it is obvious that other nearby areas in Downtown are suffering because of the chaos of the Underground. I go to NYC every year, and i have spent time in several other big cities as well and I have absolutely never felt so unsafe as I did driving near the Underground.

Pros: shocking

Cons: shocking

Underground is unique and safe

by Silversong

As a native of Atlanta and a local I have to say that Underground is a good place to visit. The crime that some have associated with Underground and the area are not so. I have lived in Downtown Atlanta and work across the street from Underground at Georgia State University for over 25 years. You do NOT need to walk in fear around underground. That does not mean that you should not exercise caution, especially at night. Unfortunately the World of Coke has moved to Centennial Park next to the Georgia Aquarium so that major tourist draw is gone. Still its worth a check out.

Pros: fun atmosphere, lots of interesting shops.

Cons: World of Coke have moved

Atlanta is not safe

by Barry331

Atlanta has been over hyped and 'PR sanitized'-the reality is far different!(higher per capita violent crime statistics than LA,NY and Chicago)-Dont expect a pleasant, fun experience! If you are not within eye ball range of a uniformed Police Officer-You Are Not Safe In Atlanta!-Get a concealed weapons permit and legally carry concealed if you plan on spending any time in the downtown or midtown atlanta area, carry pepper spray(aim for the eyes- Run!)-It can save your life

BE careful while in the streets...

by faithfal

Really good shopping , but the area isn't the safest. There are a few good restaurants and a few night clubs. Its a cool hang, but be sure to have a ton of friends with you.

A disgrace to Atlanta

by scdadofthree

Family visited Undergropund Atlanta several years ago (maybe late 90's) Back 8/08--dirty, not safe, gangsta adults and kids bunched up in groups all over blocking sidewalks. I don't think we have ever been so disappointed in a place in our lives. This is a disgrace to Atlanta. We have spoke to over 25 people in past 2 weeks on this and all feel the same. Atlanta--get this cleaned up!!!!

Pros: nothing !!!

Cons: everything--ditry-not safe--a disgrace to a great city

Worst experience ever!

by traveling1

I went, I saw, and I'm thankful I lived to get home! Underground Atlanta is a HORRIBLE place. I went and took my 16 yr old daughter. Major mistake! The lewd comments made toward my daughter by the trash hanging around there and the thugs hanging around is enough to keep me from EVER going back and will recommend against it to all my friends!

Pros: None

Cons: All have been stated

Not Worth The Time

by sarahlhal

After hearing great things about the Underground, I decided to pay a Friday night visit. I was NOT impressed. First of all, it's in a sketchy area. Second, there is nothing to do after the stores close. The "clubs" if you want to call them that, were not open, and the bars that were, were dirty, dark, and dingy. Not appealing. After walking around on the upper part of the Underground, I realized that the only people on the street were police officers and bums begging for money. A robbery had just occurred right in that area. I did not feel safe AT ALL, and I will never go back. Not a place to go if you are looking for someplace clean and fun.

Pros: None

Cons: Smelly, dirty, and unsafe.

It is what it is

by jaejie

I think it is still the same as back in the day. Fast food in variety, shoping places, single professionals. By me traveling around the country, I've learned to enjoy myself where ever I am. Regardless of the kids, lack of security, ect.... You have those elements every where. You can still go to the Underground to have fun and shop.

Good for browsing

by tyneshad

This is a nice spot to walk around with someone, possibly a date, and just see things and talk about world affairs, politics, the sidewalk vendors hocking wares or the GREAT chili cheese fries at the Johnny Rockets near the music store. This is like a mall, but not, and that's what makes it a chill place.

Pros: Laid-back atmosphere, nightlife

Cons: Lots of high school-age children running about

Sherman! Please Come Back to the ATl, Finish the Job!

by jaymaygm

Over twenty years ago, when Underground Atlanta, first opened, this place was the bomb! Great Restaurants/Bars/Clubs and unique shopping. Today this is not even a skeleton of the original. Tacky vendor booths, lousy food-court, and out of control teens running everywhere! The Marta station, does nothing to bring quality guests and tourists to this destination. Do yourself a favor and go to Atlantic Station, above the ground, where the air is fresh, and you don't feel like you have to watch your back!

Pros: None!

Cons: Poor Quality Retail and Food, Unsafe Area!

A great visit but control the Kids.

by mstriple07

Underground Atlanta, back in the days, was the place to visit. It is now full of shopping stores and restaurants which would be an outstanding place to go if they would just control the kids/childrens. Children under the age of 16 shouldn't be allowed to wonder without parental control. Bring back the nostalgic days when you can walk through listening to the great sounds of music. Many teenagers are very respectful, however, they need a community center to hang out downtown. I love the mix of people & shops Bring back older bands to entertain outside and in. I would love to sit on the steps of the Underground listening to music 'till 12mid having a drink or two. Overall, I enjoy walking the Underground. Parents don't allow your kids to go to Underground without you. Overall, it's a great place!

Pros: Bands, Bars, Restaurants

Cons: Kids w/o parents, Need bands outside, Affordable shops

"NOT THE SAME"

by alady

THE UNDERGROUND HAS REALLY GONE DOWN. ITS JUST A PLACE FOR PARENTS TO DROP OF THEIR KIDS TO RUN WILD, BUT I FOR 1 WOULD NOT. IF WANT TO SEE A BUNCH OF PUNK ROCKERS, DOOMS DAY, OR MAYBE A COUPLE OF 'I DONT KNOW WHAT I AMS' TEENS, THEN THIS IS THE PLACE TO GO

Cons: KID CROWDED

Must see for visitors

by questar

Well worth the trip -- but once is probably enough. Lots of interesting shops, but few selling much more than junk. A few good restaurants. It's just an interesting place to walk around.

whatever.....

by Bugglady78

All the shops were the same as you would find in any mall in America. The only thing my group found remotely interesting were the historical markers telling what had been in that spot. I enjoyed the architecture but somehow the overhead pipes and cement just "dampened" whatever architectural experience might have been had. This is definitely not all its cracked up to be....

Pros: hist. architecture

Cons: shops & vendors

Tourist mall

by deutsh01

This is just a large tourist mall -- great if you're looking to buy some Atlanta magnets. It is conviniently located right in the downtown so I think it's worth a short trip to see the interesting decour.

go here for....

by phishindaisy

the chocolate shop and the souvenirs if you are visiting as a tourist. Try anything with pralines and the Tuttles are mouthwatering. If you live/work in ATL & need a sinful stress reliever (or something to sneak in to Turner Field for a Brave's game), grab a piece fresh-made chocolate. It is soooooo good!

Has potential but ...

by ebergman_citysearch

Underground Atlanta is really nothing more than a glorified shopping mall. Unless you're being forced to walk through it to get to the Braves shuttle, this is not a place I think of frequenting or taking visitors when they come to Atlanta.

Pros: near MARTA
