Ella

★★★★☆
Named after the great singer Ella Fitzgerald, this new East Village lounge has one of the best vibes in New York. The décor is a spin on Hollywood glamour and the roaring 20s, complete with black, white, and red all over, exposed brick, dramatic chandeliers, and cocktail waitresses dressed as flappers. The cocktail lounge upstairs is sinfully attractive and the downstairs features a mini-stage, DJ booth, and a piano so musicians can jam along with the DJs. The newest project from the owners of Gallery Bar promises to be a good place for a quiet drink with a date, with an option for dancing afterwards of courseor a fun night out with your friends. There's also a 40-seat performance space in the downstairs piano bar area as well.

Not a huge fan of clubs but this place was really sweet inside with the clack and white paisley type wallpaper. lot of dance music, tons of hot guys, fun atmosphere, but a bit overcrowded.\r

Definitely go here at least once.

It looks like every time you see a bad review, there is some strange glowing rave about this sad place. Obviously, people associated with the bar are trying to increase the rating. Pathetic.

This place is simply pathetic. Wannabe club on Avenue A that thinks it's in Meatpacking, except doesn't have the patronage or quality to back up it's self-image.

We were forced to come here by a friend at 2am. Arrived and were promptly turned away by a bitchy door boy who didn't even bother to turn around and face us. A minute later they opened the rope for a crew of 5 overweight balding guidos wearing greasy undershirts and acted like they were Lindsay Lohan's entourage.

After our friend comes out and begs them to let us in, they try to push her out of the way, then finally let us in. I am telling you we spent no more than a MINUTE AND A HALF inside. Walked in, saw that there were 8 people in there, turned around and walked out laughing. Pathetic.

I went for a friends birthday with a bunch of people. I didn't know too many of them but we had a blast. The music (and alcohol) forced us to dance all night. We all said we would go back for sure.

Choose this lounge for my bachlorette party this past saturday. The waitress Sosh was rude to me and was rolling her eyes when we asked her twice for soda. And then of course it took her an hour to get it to us. The manager Adam was rude doesnt know what customer service is. We had spoken to them previously and bought a table. They jacked up the price by 100$ for the bottles that night and added on a 20% gratuity for the horrible service the waitress gave us with out telling us any of this in advance, and lying about the prices! I wouldnt have given her a decent tip for her poor service. The DJ would not take requests and played HORRIBLE music all night. Like Sunshiny day and elevator music. Overall this place was TERRIBLE. I feel so bad that we picked this place for my one memorable night, when we could have gone to a million better places in NYC! I am SORRY I WENT THERE. HIGHLY UNRECOMMENDED!

i went to ella the other night with a few of my friends and we had an amazing time! granted, they were a little selective at the door... but that only makes for a better crowd inside. ive already gone back a good few times. ive seen the other reviews and yes, this bar is different that all the other bars on the lower east side, its a breath of fresh air. finally somewhere near my house, with a good atmosphere, a great crowd, and delicious (but slightly expensive) drinks. if you want to go to a crowded club with sweaty jerks jumping all over, go to the meat packing dist. if you want to go to a pub for a draft beer, go to library bar or doc hollidays. if you want classy, trendy and fun, id recommend ella.

Cons: a little spendy... but still worth it.

It's amazing to see how quickly their PR people respond to neg reviews of the place with glowing 5-star ones. They should pay that much attention to what's going on at the door and inside! It's still a waste of time and money coming here.

Went here sunday night for a drink on a date. The bartender made some of the better drinks for me and my date that either of had ever had...YUM! My date kept commenting on how she wished her apartment looked like this bar.
After a few drinks, the bartender suggested we go to the basement. I didnt realize there was one at first. Once we got down there there was a room full of peope listening to an amazing pianist. This place was a real treat, especially on SUNDAY!!! Made for a perfect date.

Ella is simply elegant!!! Our small group of friends had to wait a brief moment to get in, but that is standard for a lounge like this. The drinks were amazing, crowd was HOT! music was classy yet hip and made you want to groove. I can't complain at all. They really did a great job with this place. The interior is absolutely gorgeous and i look forward to coming back....

I came this weekend for drinks and was very impressed with Ella. I was invited by friends and heard it was by the same guys that have Gallerybar and Plan B. I read a bunch of reviews before coming to the bar and was very eager to see the new place. The design is flawless, very classic, elegant and very comfortable. Big Chandeliers drape the ceiling upstairs while a small stage and piano grace the downstairs lounge. I watched a pianist and drummer do a two man set on a whim which I thought was very cool. The drinks were tasty and strong, a bit pricey, oh well. Overall, I think it is really nice and very different than other places that I've been too lately. I love it being I live 3 blocks away.

I agree with the other reviews, a few friends and I had dinner in the neighborhood on Friday and headed over to check out Ella and were stunned by a guest list, a terribly rude doorman and not a single person in sight! Come on...it's Avenue A, there is so much competition in the neighborhood and none of which you need to fight your way past a snobby door man or velvet rope. Good luck to them, I will take my business elsewhere!

Why would you open a bar on Ave A decorate it with velvet ropes & a guestlist especially when your neighboring bars are all neighborhood bars like The Library? Door man was very cocky trying to act like he's working a door in the MPD saying it is guestlist only. I don't even get treated as poorly as I did when I go out in the MPD. Obviously, Ella doesn't want to make money and is very confused about what neighborhood their in. Two of my friends got their early and was inside...they said it was only 6 people inside and it really wasn't anything special.
