I am really grateful that we have this place handy. I like the fact that this is a pretty convenient store, they also have a wonderful meat section.

Unfortunately, the beautiful waiters and waitresses were so understaffed it was painful to watch them work so hard and entertain the customers at the same time.

the only con for me - is that if this restaurant was a byob it would be the best. but thats just me.
the waitstaff is very attentive, knowledgeable, come back often to check on you.
AND of course, the reason most people come here -

Pros: Pesto Dipping Sauce for bread.

The opera singing waiters make it much more than a dinner. We celebrated my fathers 80th birthday here and brought along our 11 & 13 kids. The short little interludes break up the dinner and make it a night out not just a nice dinner.

The old woman is gone, and her crooked son is gone. Now the place is run by a wonderful woman, a member of the family. The place is great, happier, more exciting, really fun. Just watch for those anal retentive types who love to "SShh" other customers when they talk quietly while the singers sing. Be careful to leave a decent tip because some of the more aggressive female waiters will chase you outside asking for more money. Really funny. But a great place, the best in Philly!!!

Was in town from Texas, visiting a few friends in Philly and we had the pleasure to dine at The Victor Cafe. Absolutely incredible dining experience and a very unique atmosphere. The servers take turns belting out beautiful opera songs every 15 minutes. The food was GREAT as well. We eat out alot, and have all over the world, and our Victor Cafe experience is certainly up at the top of our dining experiences!!

Would make for a great date place as well...

Quite simply a fantastic experience. Old world charm in this rowhome Italian restaurant in South Philly. Terrific food, but the real treat is the service. Every 20 minutes or so one of the servers gives an opera rendition, all are amateur opera singers and are quite good. Its a terrific spot for great Italian food as well.

Where do I begin? My dining experience at Victor Cafe was nothing short of spectacular. I took a date there a while ago on the recommendation of a friend. This is a place where "Grammy," who incidentally is pushing 90 years old, spends the entire day in the kitchen concocting new specials with the freshest ingredients available. When your server decides to break into song (which he or she will), the music may enchant you as much as gazing on the black and white photos of all the opera stars and celebrities who have patronized the restaurant over the past 80 years. If you are lucky enough, the current patroness, the latest in the family line, will come over to your table and charm you with her beauty, grace, and wit. Especially good for birthdays, anniversaries, and other celebrations, the staff will welcome your party as if you were a guest in one of their own homes. My pasta was perfectly cooked - not too soggy as is so common these days, and the chocolate cake melted in my mouth. When the check finally comes, you are assured not to want to leave - I stayed long enough that I was afraid to overstay my welcome - but true to family hospitality, I was never made to feel that way. Though I live in New York City, I look forward to the opportunity to return again - and for the right occasion, I would make a special trip just for the dining experience. BEWARE: there are other places nearby that claim to have waiters who sing opera, but don't be fooled: Victor Cafe is the original.

Cons: They eventually close at night...

I had no idea what to expect when I decided to attend the Victor Cafe. A colleague of mine had recommend it a s a must see when visiting Philadelphia. Not only was the service perfect, but the staff's incredible singing talents blew us away. The food was excellent (get the filet, it was ridiculous) and the overall ambiance is something that will stay with me and my guests for a long time. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

My wife and I are longtime Victor's patrons and I agree with the above poster- there are a lot of new faces among the staff at the Cafe.. but I have to say- it's great! To be honest, I was getting a little tired of hearing many of the same arias each time we came, but my wife loves their Filet Maria and so we went last thursday night. To my total surpise I heard all brand new songs! Our waitress did a gorgeous version of "Summertime" and one of the busboys sang a beautiful aria that was so sad my wife and I were totally drawn in by his performance even though we don't understand Italian and then he sang a note we couldn't believe- High C??? The new staff are definitely younger but they share the same dedication to classical music and great service that their predecessors had.. Also, I recommend trying the cheesecake- it's new on the menu and the chef does a great job of keeping it very light and smooth.
Also, it was one elderly couple's anniversary and the staff made a big deal of announcing it to the restaurant and even got the couple to get up and have a dance together with everyone watching. You could tell their kids were really touched watching them dance- it was a really nice moment.

I went to Victor's several times with my date. When I took my girlfriend over the weekend, I was shocked to see so many new faces. The singing was not that great. The food was just "ok" - but not great. What happened to this once popular restaurant? I would have to say that I was disappointed. I may return in the future.

Last Saturday night me and my boyfriend wanted to try something different then just a restaurant, so we went to victors where there was live entertainment while we dined. I was first excited to see they had Valet parking in South Philly then when greeted by the hostess (who was all smiles) I was ushered to my table that I had reserved earlier in the week and was ready for me when i got there. My server neat and respectful also an amazing singer started us with cocktails and appetizers which I got a vanilla martini that was great and the Caprese and Mussels Red.. yum!. The portions were perfect . Then my main course the Tortellini took my breathe away the sauce was delicious and I found it to be really fulling that i even had leftovers. The opera singers gave me chills there voices were beautiful at the table or on stage. After ever good dinner we followed with dessert .. a warm piece of molten chocolate cake . need i say more .. and I was impressed by there large selection of herbal teas since Im not a coffee drinker. All in all this place was great , quint atmosphere , delicious food, and live opera entertainment . We Will Be Back Again!

I drove about 2 1/2 hours to get there last week. I found the place was where they filmed Rocky so I was excited to see the place. The food was ok but overpriced, I walked out of there about $70 bucks for one person. The manager was nice had to give him that. But the waiter I had was a bit on the snob side. When I was seated at the table for 4, the waiter came over about 5 times and never bothered to clear the remaining glasses, dishes and silverwear, so I was swamped by the whole thing. I had the most expensive piece of meat on the menu and asked them to cook it rare. There was no problem with the cook, but the waiter I think purposely didnt pick it up because when I got it the entire plate was ice cold.

I tried with all my abilities to try to be nice and all but I got nothing but a snobby attitude from him. What got me the most was that they filmed Rocky 6 there and when I walked in to the place, no one thought about it or you wouldnt of ever thought they filmed Rocky there. When asked about it, I got the impression they didnt want anything to be filmed there. Out of the entire place and there's about 5 different rooms, there was one poster hidden upstairs in the corner of the room that Stallone signed. You'd think they'd have more pride or respect then that.

But in my experience I would not drive 225 miles round trip to visit that place again, I wouldnt go to that place again even if I lived nearby. Very poor service, but it had nothing to do with the manager. The quality of the food was so so and its high priced. But if your looking for a small place to have desert or coffee, then you might enjoy it because the staff sings opera which I found to be nice.

I brought my son and daughter-in-law here last weekend for my son's 35th birthday and we had just the best time. We got there about 7:45 or our 8 o'clock reservation and they seated us right away. We had the Clams Casino and the Caesar Salad to start- both were really great. For dinner we had the Filet Maria (Oh My God is all I can say- it's like you die and go to heaven - the mashed potatoes!) and the Dido and Aeneas (like seafood pasta) -Delish! and I forget what my daughter-in-law ordered. For dessert I HIGHLY suggest the Warm Chocolate thing- it's melty gooey chocolatey goodness. Also had the tiramisu- it's big! definitely enough for 2 people to share. Last but definitely not least: The Singing! Wow. Just wow. The waiters sing a beautiful opera song every 15 minutes and basically bring the house down. Come here for romantic dinners, birthday parties, or any old thing- just come.

First- The whole staff are so sweet and helpful- they went above and beyond in accomodating my handicapped fiancee.
Second- The food is awesome. I had the Filet Maria- I reccomend it to anybody who likes a tender piece of meat and some of the best mashed potatoes iIve ever had.
Third- The singing. One girl actually brought tears to my fiancee's eyes with her song. It was really beautiful.
All in all a great evening. Thank you, Victors!

This was my first time at the Victor Cafe - I had avoided it for over a decade, fearing that the music would be cheesy and and the food mediocre because of the emphasis on the music. We went for a child's birthday. The service problems recounted in the most recent reviews seem to have been cleared up - there was no problem with our reservation, we were seated promptly, and served well throughout the meal. The waiters do let you linger, which was lovely for such a small space (it was a week night and only the main room was in use). The waiters were also the kindest I'd ever encountered, and I've eaten in a huge number of restaurants - perhaps the kindness comes from being treated with respect (because of their musical abilities). I would have expected them to have attitude, and they did not. The music was pretty good - the 3 selections we heard were well chosen, not the least bit cliched, and beautifully sung. The waiters had good voices and great technique, and managed to integrate serving and singing which can't be easy. As far as the food goes, I was also pleasantly surprised. My husband noted that his dish was heavy on the cream and cheese, but then again he did order the tortelloni. The Victor salad was large and really yummy for being a green salad (perhaps it was the Gorgonzola and chopped egg garnish). The squid in my linguini fra diavolo were tender, delicious and plentiful, and the sauce had some serious heat and good flavor. The pasta was well cooked. I tasted a friend's pasta with chicken livers and it was also delicious, the livers tender. The spumoni was elegant and light, the pistachio creme brulee also elegant despite its bright green color.

So - all in all, I was very pleasantly surprised and will not hesitate to return. It was pricy, but the entertainment really was first rate and the food delicious.

I was only in Philly for the day, wanted some South Philly Italian and found Victor's on this website. It was FANTASTIC.

We ended up ordering all of the specials that night. Homemade fettucini with a creamy crab sauce, Tilapi in capers and butter, shrimp and scallop puree filled ravioli in saffron cream sauce. Everything was delicious. The pistaccio creme brulee is a must. The house Chianti was great, too.

All of the wait staff are Opera singers in varying stages of training. One waitress had "several advanced degrees in Opera". She'll give you goosebumps.

The restaurant sits in the middle of a street of row houses, you'll think you're lost at first. Plenty of street parking was available (and $10 valet).

I and 10 friends went to the Victor Cafe' last Saturday night.. I've been going there for about nine years now, no one else had ever been. I can honestly say that it was as good as it has ever been. I was a little nervous about bring these frinds after reading a few less than flattering reviews that were wrtitten recently. However, our table for 11 people was waiting for us as soon as we walked in at 8:00 PM, our waiter was knowledgeable and friendly and my meal was excellent. In fact, everyone in our party had a great experience. I can't help but wonder if the negative reviews were written by local competitors trying to disparage the Victor.

Perhaps my only criticism is that the music was a little bit loud and a few of the singers were somewhat difficult to hear. I recall that in previous years the singers would move around in order to give everyone a better chance to hear their voices. Other than that, we had no complaints. I'd still highly recommend the Victor Cafe'.

We visited the Victor Cafe a couple of weeks ago.
We ordered the Victor Salad and the Calamari, which were delicious! Best Calamari I ever tasted!
We all loved our main dish, and the dessert. It was a birthday celebration, and the waitstaff put a sparkler in the dessert and sang happy birthday. What a lovely surprise! The singing waitstaff were all wonderful; and we enjoyed the arias. Our waitress, Alexis, was very friendly and courteous.
We will be back! Thank you for a memorable evening.

Just a bad night all the way around. I have to laugh now, since there's nothing I can do, or did the owners offer after our visit to what myself and friends now refer to "the night at the zoo". Our reservation was 'lost', then we waited with the madam victor (apparently an elderly woman is the zoo keeper). After that torture we we squeezed at a diner like boothe that was the most cramped I've ever been in any restaurant. Our server (apparently didn't want to be there either), since she was absent except to take our order with several mistakes, and collect her money. The singers were good considering the music was so loud we could barely hear them.
At least we (friends), have a story that we will laugh about for years to come.

What a great restaurant. Staff are young, personable, utterly attentive and fabulous singers on top of it all!

I arrived early to take advantage of the new lounge upstairs. I will definitely come back just to hang out in the relaxed-but-classy space filled with great opera artifacts and serving delicious drinks in a very cozy manner. The bartender, who chatted everyone up so charmingly, is apparently the great grandson of the original owner! That's pretty cool..

Started dinner with the (very generous) portion of hot, garlicky, white-wine sauced mussels while my date had the crespelle capricio (crab meat in a creamy, herbed bechamel sauce, wrapped in crispy baked prociutto drizzled with a light balsamic vinegar sauce..ok my mouth is watering just thinking about it! haha... He had the veal picatta (he loved it) I had one of the specials, the petite steak, and went wild over it. I had to fight my date for the garlicky, so tender brocolli rabe that came with it (and I dont even like that vegetable usually bc it's always served so tough and stringy - NOT here). For dessert I had the creme brullee-simply awesome and he had the warm valrhona chocolate cake.. we ordered one to go to have later, it was that special.

In conclusion, I read the other reviews and just dont understand the negative ones. I will come back again and again and again with everyone from my mother-in-law to my girlfriends. It's just that great of a place.

Pros: THE FOOD, singing servers, fantastic atmosphere and decor. Great for groups.

Cons: street parking not easy to find on sat nites but that's why they have valet service, not really a place for little ones

We just got home from our wonderful meal at Victor Cafe. Even though we arrived early for our 7:30 reservation, we were seated right away. The overall ambiance of the place was romantic, warm and inviting. There were lots of old photos on the walls of opera greats from the past. Our waiter was very energetic and friendly with a wonderful tenor voice we later discovered. Every 15-20 minutes a waiter or bartender would ring the bell and sing an aria. All of the voices were lovely. Simon Cowell would be proud. The food was prompt and hot?and delicious. I highly recommend the Crespelle Capriccio appetizer, which is crabmeat in a bechamel sauce wrapped in prosciutto, baked, with a drizzle of balsamic reduction. It melted in my mouth. For our main course, we chose the veal piccatta and the Penne Prince Igor(penne with smoked salmon, caviar and asparagus in vodka sauce.) Both dishes were full of flavor and cooked to perfection?and arrived hot. For dessert, we both had the Warm Valrhona Chocolate cake with melted center, creme anglaise and gelato. A definite ?wow.? There wasn?t a drop left on either of our plates. We finished off our meal with a glass of Limoncello, the perfect end to a perfect meal. We will definitely return and bring friends and relatives. We will also plan to return for birthdays and anniversaries. We highly recommend this wonderful restaurant.

EVERY CHRISTMAS SEASON A GROUP OF FRIENDS GO TO VICTOR'S & IT'S BEEN A TRADITION FOR THE PAST 6 YEARS, UNTIL NOW. I AM SO DISAPPOINTED (ALONG WITH MY LONG TIME FRIENDS)! SUCH CHAIOS, AND LACK OF MANAGEMENT, THERE IS NO RECOGNIZABLE FACES, AND WE WERE MADE TO FEEL LIKE CATTLE, AND HEARDED WITH THE OTHER (STEER), INTO THE LOUNGE EVEN THOUGH WE HAD RESERVATIONS WE WERE MADE TO WAIT FOR AN HOUR. THEN IT JUST WENT DOWN HILL FROM THERE. HOW COULD SUCH A 'TRADITION' GO SO BAD IN ONLY A YEAR?
WE WILL CONTINUE OUR CHRISTMAS OUTING, BUT NEVER AGAIN AT THE VICTOR CAFE, YOU'VE LOST YOUR SPECIAL, ACCOMIDATING FEELING AND WITH THAT- YOU ARE NO LONGER THE SAME PLACE I'M VERY SAD TO SAY. I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND THIS VICTOR'S TO ANYONE, EVER.

We went to Vitcor Cafe with 7 people for a long-overdue, child-free dinner with old friends. Our experience, on the whole, was uneven. We had a reservation but waited a considerable time in the bar. More of a lounge, this may have been my favorite place. Dark and intimate with French and Italian classics playing (albeit loudly) in the background, this would be the perfect place to meet for a covert little tryst. Anyway, when seated we were crammed against the wall in a too bright dining room. My husband could not even push back his chair. Food was uneven; my mussels in white wine were bland, but my husband's ceasar salad, dressed with real anchovies, was excellent. My veal scallopene, on the other hand, was rich and flavorful with mushrooms and ham (I think?), if a bit small. My husband's chicken with proscuitto was dry, the polenta runny and bland instead of rich and creamy. I'm fairly certain our baked chocolate dessert was burned on the bottom. The opera is fine, if you're into that sort of thing. On the plus side, they'll take a reservation, a service which seems to be going the way of the dinosaur lately. The question is: do you really want it? All in all, not a winning meal. I'd try other places first.

What a restaurant! You not only get great food, but you hear the best operatic voices ever. We had great service as well. We went there with friends who were delighted with the food and the entertainment. We are definitely going there again.

let me begin by saying that i was reading review prior to making my reservation since i'd had a dissappointing evening at another s. phila italian restaurant, i wanted to see how victor's was i hadn't been in months. after reading the reviews, i almost reconsidered, i now know i should have. now i am aware that since jan 06 the victor's that i'd known for the past decade it 'gone' & what remains is not even in the same league. nothing is the same, the staff are polite, but young and unfamiliar with the basics. as for the hostess, she was 12 if she was a day, and her assistant, a drunk old man, well what a mess. like i've suggested to another greedy owner; you get what you pay for and that means employees as well as dinner.

victor cafe is italian fair mixed with some italian opera! exciting! we started off with some cheesy crab meet wrapped in proscuitto and drizzled with a balsalmic glaze and lemon juice. very yummy. a perfect mix of rich and tart. for our entrees we shared some homemade tortellini and chicken stuffed with more proscuitto on a bed of polenta. mmm. although i had room for desert, my date surprisingly did not. while we were eating we were serenaded by the wait staff singing opera arias. the ambiance is unparalleled.

I too have been a Victor patron. I also have noticed changes, and they aren't for the better, but the singers who have been there throughout are still as amazing as ever, in singing as well as service. If you have not been there prior to these changes than you don't know what you've missed.I have so I don't think the authors of the prior reviewers are"cranky" folks, but sad "folks", and as well they should be since there is a major void, without the 'usual suspects' who are an important part of the VICTOR. So, even though the great personalities & voices of the young Sinatra and the distinguished bartender, and the most attentive and outgoing manager are no longer @ the Victor Cafe, there are still some talented long time singers who I hope won't disappear as well. Also, where are the awesome threesome?

I came across the negative reviews here just minutes before leaving to meet some dear friends. It was our first time there and we were very pleasantly surprised. Just opera, but it was grand and the food was very, very good too. I'm not an opera fan but looked forward to hearing the talented waiter and waitresses. Even the hostess sang a song. Many of them showed acting skill too! They had tremendous personalities. Our waitress was just super--wonderful personality and voice too!

The place was not busy and perhaps the two cranky reviews might have something to do with it. If you are not addicted to the former bartender's and former manager's voices, then you will love it. And try the creme brulee--two of us said simultaneously it was the best we ever had in our lives. It has a little pistachio in it!

THE LAST COUPLE TIMES AT VICTOR I THOUGHT IT WAS MY IMAGINATION, BUT I READ THE TWO PRIOR REVIEWS, AND AS DIFFERENT AS THEY ARE I'D HAVE TO AGREE WITH BOTH(IN THE ORDER WRITTEN)! I AS WELL HAD BEEN A FREQUENT PATRON OF 'VICTOR', BUT WILL NO LONGER BE DINING THERE. IN SUCH A SHORT TIME(NEW YEAR)SUCH A TRADITION HAS DISAPPEARED, I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND AS I'M SURE OTHER PATRONS WOULD AGREE, WHY AND WHO WOULD TRY TO CHANGE PERFECTION? SUCH A SHAME, BECAUSE I'D BROUGHT FRIENDS AND FAMILY WORLDWIDE TO THIS "EXPERIENCE", AND NOW IT NO LONGER IS AN EXPERIENCE, UNLESS YOU WANT TO FEEL TENSION, AND MUSIC SO LOUD THAT YOU CAN'T EVEN CONVERSE BETWEEN ARIAS.TALENT THAT DOES'NT COMPARE TO THE RECENT PAST. I'D HOPE THAT ONE DAY SOON, THINGS RETURN TO THE 'HOME FEELING' THAT VICTOR'S HELD AS NO OTHER.

March 18, For years I've been going to Victor's at least 2 times per month. Told guests they'd hear "that's life", or "mac the knife", and at least 2 broadway hits from the outstanding bartender, and come to find neither of them are employed there any longer, and after being told the manager has been sick for weeks, I find out she isn't employed there any longer. Why would someone try to fix something that wasn't broken? I was told that ownership is changing, that's fine; but don't change the "atmosphere", which was stressful to say the least, it's just sad. I have never been so disappointed in an evening as I've been THAT evening. Victor's has lost our business, and I am sure many others forever. What were you thinking? R. Cohen, M.D.

Thank you Greg DiStefano, owner; Michelle DeLuca, manager; and Bill Mayo, gifted voice and performer for the most wonderful evening ever, on January 6, 2006. The food, drinks, service, and ambience at Victor Cafe are of the highest standards of any restaurant I have ever visited. When at Victor Cafe, it is obvious that the owner, Greg, cares and tends to every detail. The manager, Michelle, is an amazing woman who handles every visibible situation and those invisible situations behind the scenes. And, the gifted voice and performer, Bill, endears himself to everyone and when he opens his mouth to sing every woman in the room can't help but fall in love.

never went until a cousin's 40th birthday dinner. from the moment i stepped in the door i felt like i'd been there 1000 X'S, and that i was SPECIAL! the greeter, a firey blonde was sooo personable, you felt her enegy, it made me get excited to be there. as soon as we sat this youg man sang a frank sinatra song that made me cry, then a young woman sang something in italian, that left me breathless-this continued all evening. the greeter from the door, was walking through the dining area & asking customers how everything was-i was impressed, today you don't get that kind of concern ANYWHERE, i was later told she was the manager- not surprising-she was right out there in the grit of it with the singers. to top all that the food was outstanding! when i think of my night i smile

Absolutely the best!!! The food was fantastic, the prices were average. We were in a hurry and from out of town, our cabbie suggested Victor Cafe.We were accomodated without reservation and served quickly to make the show we were in town for. I was so pleasantly surprised by the singing staff. I can't wait to go back when I'm not rushed.

I was with my new beau, and he took me to Victor's without any preamble. We walked in to find a woman in white blouse and black skirt singing like a bird to a rapt audience. It took a few minutes to realize the waitstaff were all vocal whiz kids and we'd be treated to great service, great arias, and good food for the next hour or so. What can I say?--the boyfriend impressed me with this choice, and we're heading for the one-year anniversary!

Before leaving Michigan for our visit to Philly, we were told that we MUST have dinner at Victor Cafe. With so many wonderful restuarants to choose from, Victor wasn't really our top choice, but we went anyway. It was the best decision we made on our trip! What fun! Our waitress was wonderful, and when she sang we couldn't believe the quality of her voice, along with the other waiters, and a young patron who also stood up and sang. The food was great, too, and we were able to order something that wasn't on the menu and had it prepared special for us. Bravo, Victor Cafe!

My wife (then girlfriend) took me here for Valentine's Day 2000. I had never been to this restaraunt before and didn't know what to expect. It was the most romantic evening of my life. The restaraunt is a converted double in South Philly. The waiters/waitresses are opera singers in training. Every 10 minutes or so, a different waiter/waitress breaks out into song. It was just the most amazing date of my life. My wife didn't quite know what to expect and we were both just so thrilled with the ambiance, the food wasn't bad either (actually it was very good).

This is a music lover's heaven---a South Philly landmark that looks the same today as it did when Caruso's high Cs ruled the Met. Clearly, opera is the thing---the walls are papered with photos of opera greats. And the waiters, opera…
