I've had a number of HVAC issues over the past few years, and have used a number of different companies. John Alfred Mechanical was always the first to call me back, and I've used them twice, but I've come to the conclusion that they're a bit amateurish...you can do better (e.g. Matson/Maximum Mechanical is better by far). Jack has a two-man team (he's one of them), and prides himself on keeping prices low due to minimal overhead (e.g. no franchise fees, etc.). However, he talks a lot and sounds convincing, but second opinions always seem to make more sense than what he tells me. His people skills are likely to be what's kept him in business all these years. His knowledge and tools are not as good as what others provide. He actually created a new problem in one instance that cost me money to fix, plus his cohort released freon into the open air, which is a no-no.. In a pinch, he could suffice, but I would definitely get other opinions for anything costing >$100.

Pros: Responsive, friendly, good people skills, slightly lower prices (but you get what you pay for)

Cons: Amateurish, not as qualified technically, not as credible
