I DO NOT recommend taking your dogs there!!! Walking into a pet business one would expect a friendly, cheerful pet lover's greeting. That was not the case when my dog and I set foot at Four Paws in Valparaiso. The groomer was instantly hateful & frustrated. She had the most unprofessional attitude. Even though I had an appointment, she said I would have to come back another day & proceeded to have a hissy fit while she repeatedly told the shampooer "I am not working 'till 6!!! My dog was not on their books at all. She kept telling the shampooer that they had 12 or 13 dogs to do & that she was not working 'till 6! She also complained that the owner "should not be ALLOWED to book appointments..." While she went on and on repeathing those things and others, such as "I AM the groomer..." not the owner... The whole experience was bizzare to say the least. I asked to speak to the person who booked our appointment; so the shampooer called the owner, handed the phone to the groomer... She began yelling at him and continued to have her hissy fit... She then HUNG UP on him! Yes! She hung up on her boss!!! So I requested again to speak with him. When they put me on the phone w/owner he asked if they were being rude to me...? "Rude" is a mild description of this woman's bizzare behavior; he said to leave my dog and that they would take care of him and that he would handle her being rude. I then told the groomer that I was not comfortable leaving my dog with her; she replied that she would not hurt him or anything. ...I kick myself for leaving my dog there! This groomer said my dog would not be ready until 7 p.m. and that they would call me after 7 p.m to pick him up. (key piece of info...) She repeated this was because she had 12/13 dogs to do. She had no clue of the service I requested, so I went over it with her. One of the things requested was a white scarf because we had a wedding going on. When I booked appointment w/owner, he spoke of all the wonderful things they were going to do and how wonderful my dog was going to look; he went on about how they groom dogs for weddings etc. Before 7 pm. I felt very uncomfortable (...still kicking myself for leaving my dog there!) ...expecting the call... I was about to drive there, when the owner calls to ask me randomly if I have a dog at their business... It was as if they were calling everybody in town trying to match up my dog to someone!!! UNBELIEVABLE!!!! (...I still get sick to my stomach thinking about this!) He said my dog had been ready for 3 hours and that "I" did not leave my contact information. As if suddenly, I was being accused of not providing my information... Never mind I booked an appointment with the owner and spoke to him for a good while. He was in shock to learn the groomer said it would be 7 pm before my dog would be ready. His words were... "7:00?!?! We close at 5!!! He indicated he'd have the groomer meet me at the store to pick up my dog. When I arrived, no one was there; I could see my dog in a kennel, and I could also see the other dogs, who I guess were boarding and roaming the store while unsupervised, going crazy because they could see me through the glass door. Finally, this nice man arrived; who is a business owner accross the street from this hell hole. The groomer asked him as a favor to meet me so I could get my dog. Allthewhile, the loose boarding dogs were going nuts; there were fesces all over the floor... and no supervision provided. When he got my dog from the kennel, he was missing his collar; we didn't know where the leash was... he looked like a stray dog. No scarf, no apparent signs of grooming, and now the collar and leash were lost somewhere in the store. The man who met me called the groomer and put her on the phone with me. Her attitude had not changed; in fact because I was asking her about the collar/leash and what about the scarf... any scarf (didn't even have to be white at that point)... she had the nerve to tell me that she was going out of her way and "now I was trying to make things difficult!" (Unbelievable!!!!) because she told me to come back the next day and that she would have a scarf for me to pick up... REALLY...?!? She also HUNG UP ON ME while I was speaking with her... just like she hung up on her boss/owner. The nice man called her back so we could try to finish talking; he apologized for her unprofessionalism and apparently... they've been having problems with her but there are few groomers available, so they put up with her. HOW DO THEY STAY IN BUSINESS....? They did not charge me for this nightmare, but I would not ever bring my beloved pet to this place for as long as that groomer whose name begins with a "Ch" is there; and I think the "boarding" concept is overstated; it's more like dogs running lose in the store among fesces on the floor without signs of care or supervision.

We left our two small dogs at the Destin location while we were out shopping. The owner was a over-energized, I guess is the best way to describe it. We had called to let them know when we were dropping them off and they still seemed to be surprised that we dropped them off. The owner didn't ask for shot records, vet information, age, or any health information at all, which is unprofessional and a sign of an average boarding facility (I've used many, as well as been in the business myself). He just kind of threw them into the small daycare room and took our phone number and that's it. Right after we dropped them off he went back out to his car, so I don't know how much supervising they actually do. They were fine when we picked them up, although the workers still didn't know their names. So, it was fine for a couple hours but I certainly won't take them back. They just seemed too unorganized for my liking.

My husband and I had a very bad experience boarding our dogs at this location. We were vacationing in the area, and when looking for a place to board, I came across all of the positive reviews online. Unfortunately, our experience was awful. I scheduled them to be boarded Saturday 7/3- Monday 7/5. When I called, I was told those days were fine. I called back the day before to ask a few questions about food, drop off and pick-up times, etc. I was told that I could pick up and drop off any time between 8:30 and 5. When we dropped them off, the owner first had the dates wrong (had them scheduled until Tuesday). I clarified that we would be picking them up on Monday, to which he responded "You know you have to get them before 10:30, right?" I explained to him what we were told, (until 5) and he agreed to let us pick them up at 4:30. I then gave instructions about feeding, because our 2 dogs eat different foods due to allergies. I had each container labeled with their names, and gave clear instructions.

We show up at 4:30 on Monday, and no one is there. The store is locked, and I can see the dogs roaming free, without any supervision, though I cannot see my dogs. After waiting for 15 more minutes, we start to worry and call the after hours number (owner's cell phone), but it goes to voicemail every time. I left 2 messages. Finally, at 5pm I called the location in Valparaiso, and the owner's wife answered, and told me that her husband was at home with their kids. I explained that we were waiting to get our dogs, and she told us that there was confusion because someone else picked up their dogs earlier that day, and he thought that was the 4:30 pick up. I'm not sure how you confuse this when you don't have that many dogs to keep track of. This disorganization obviously made me worry that my dogs were not properly taken care of. The woman said she would meet us there, and finally at 6:15 (an hour and 45 minutes after scheduled) she arrived and we were allowed in to get our dogs. The main area had at least 4 piles of poop, and a few puddles of urine in it, with at least 4-5 dogs (that I could see) walking around in it. They claim to take the dogs out multiple times a day, in fact their response to another review said every 4 hours. If this is true, then why were so many dogs forced to go inside? She brought our dogs out, one had poop on them, and I got the food that we brought for them. I then realized that they had fed them the wrong food the entire time, as one tub was almost empty and the other was completely full and not touched-- meaning that even though I explained they had allergies, they did not take note and gave them the same food. I brought this up, saying that I was afraid they would get sick with the change in food, and she replied "Well they've been fed it all weekend and they have been fine." How would they know? They were left unattended for hours!

Needless to say, I was extremely upset with the situation, and will never take my dogs there again. They are clearly not walked as promised, and judging by the amount of water they drank when they got home (a full bowl each) then I am afraid they did not have enough water either. The mix-up with the food is inexcusable, especially when I had stated our one dog had allergies. This place is irresponsible, and I do not recommend it to anyone. I have told everyone I know that lives in the area about our experience, and they will not be using this place either.

I strongly urge you to not take your dog to this business. Poorly run, dogs aren't walked as promised and our dog after four days of being boarded there lost four pounds and smelled of urine when we picked him up. Very poor business practice especially since only ONE person has the only key to the business and the day we wanted to pick up our dog, the owner was not able to be contacted. We had to wait an extra day, thus we knew the dogs were not walked from 5pm until 8am the next morning. No shot records are required (although we had our dog get the kennel cough vaccine) and they don't monitor how the dogs play with each other. They are left uncaged during the night which could lead to dog fights if there is an aggressive dog and nobody is there to stop it or take care of the injured dog. This place should be shut down.

Business Response:

Very Sorry You Feel That Wat We at Four Paws are very sorry that you feel as if we are not run to your standards. We strive in a clean and safe place for your dogs to board. The information you provided does not sound anything like our company. Six people work at our Salon and all Six people have keys. If you do not request for your dogs to have a bath before leaving we will not provide that service. We can't just bath a dog without knowing it's history. It might have a skin condition and thus we might make it worse by using our shampoo other then a doctors perscribed shampoo. We require all dogs to have shot records and if that slipped through the cracks we will see to it that it doesnt happen again. The dogs are walked EVERY four hours except between TEN pm and SEVEN am. As for our boarding we have a very safe and clean boarding and can't make everyone happy. Sorry we couldnt accommodate you on a Sunday night at 10 pm to release your dog to you. ( whippit). Your review does not match our over 200 happy boarding customers!!!!!! Happy dogs don't fight and we pre screen all dogs before they are left out over night. NOT EVERY DOG IS CAGE FREE. Once again we apologize for being dog friendly!!!!

We are so glad that we discovered Four Paws! The facilities are very dog friendly and fun and the groomers and owners really care about your pet. We have an Australian Shepherd who HATES being groomed/ bathed. So, we stayed long enough to make sure that she would be OK. It was quickly obvious that the owner and groomers knew how to handle even our pooch! And, the grooming service - beyond anything that we've experienced elsewhere. We were so comfortable with the environment and the caring attitude of all the employees that we will not only return for grooming but will also use Four Paws for boarding and doggie day out. Trust me, you won't be disappointed....and your pet will be pampered, have fun, and be ready to go back. (PS - I originally posted this for the other location in error. We visited the Destin location and are very happy that they are more conveniently located to us - although I would travel some distance for this type of service).

If you haven't heard Four Paws has jumped the bridge and has landed in Destin. I have been taking my dog to there shop for months on the Niceville side and when I was told they were opening a shop on the Destin side I was a little worried. Would it be the same? Would you still get the same one on one treatment? You better believe it!!! There new shop is AWESOME. They still do a wonderful job and the place is so big and open and fun. Harley has found his new home and it's at the entrance of my neighborhood. If you know where City Market shopping center is then your there. Trust me everyone. It is an experience that you want forget and they have a lot of fun in there. Kudos guys!! Were glad your finally here.
