I went there for 8 months and paid $70 each time to get my dreads locked up. The result was beyond horrifying; I ended up with two huge balled spots; one TOP and the other on the SIDE of my head.

I however take full responsibility for trusting the instructions of these carless and irresponsible ??hairstylist.? The first and foremost concern of a hair professional should be the health of the client??s scalp/hair. Nappy or not is not the place to go if you care about the health of your hair; of if you care about having hair at all. If anything, I was disappointed from the lack of professionalism received from the owner of the shop.

WARNING: if anyone instructs you to not wash your hair for a MONTH, I urge you to leave their salon (Nappy or not) and never look back. There are other methods of obtaining healthy dreadlocks without permanently damaging your scalp/hair.

Met an owner from there at the ESSENCE MUSIC FESTIVAL years back. Her personality was world class, so I can imagine that the service would match. HOLLA!!!

Just wanted to swing by and say hello to all of our potential and returning customers. We look forward to providing excellent service. We have been in business for over 15 years and we have learned a lot over the years. We are one of the Premier Salons that has not given up on our loyal customers and our new customers looking for a Salon Home. We are cozy small business with a BIG NAME because we have been providing quality service for so long. Our multicultural salon has allowed us to come in contact with people from all over the World because good news travels fast and I would go so far as to say that Nappy or Not Salon is good news to people who are looking for personal service for their hair care needs. Peace to All... Red...

The stylist knew what she was doing and did my hair right.\n\nMy only complaint was the ridiculously long time I had to wait. Maybe you should space out your appointments a little bit more?

I had no idea that the reviews for our salon were so terrible... All of the suggestions will be carefully reviewed and addressed... i humbly apologize for any inconvenience that any has been caused from our salon... We have been in business since 1995 and we are not backing down now just because our regular clients do not visit this site. I apologize to those few people that had terrible experiences but that does not speak for the multitude... please forgive us and Thank you because it changes the way i feel about improvements when i read the issue... Peace and blessings.........

I called Nappy or Not salon earlier to cancel an appointment I had for today, but an emergency came up and I couldn't make it in. So I called the salon and talked to a woman named Stefanie( I assume thats how you spell it) who was supposed to do my hair. She sounded so sweet on the phone and asked me to call back later in the month to reschedule. I agreed. But after hearing all of the bad things people who were serviced by the salon are saying makes me think twice. I mean I could kind of see if it was one bad comment then I would ignore it, but majority of the reviews on this sight says something bad about the salon. I mean I don't know the the people that work ther epersonally, but with all these bad reviews, waht am I suppose to think? One reviewer mentioned in an above post that she almost got or got her eyebrow burned, I'm like OH NO, I know I'm not going there now.

Stylist Songie does a great sew in weave when she takes her time. The only thing is that she does not honor appointments, and she some times will have you waiting a really long time and it just really bad.

I had a 9:00 appt w/ Rhonda. She wasnt there when I arrived, I called her she said she was 15 minutes away. I waited and waited and waited. While waiting I saw young guys walking in and out with vodka bottles. Lori's clients getting serviced. By 10:00 Lori saw I was irritated and said Rhonda is on her way. She finally arrived about 10:30, and had the nerve to grab the girl sitting next to me, who had arrived after me. By 11:00 she finally called me to the bowl and asked her daughter to wash my hair. It was terrible her daughter used Pantene shampoo, on my hair, now I have that at home. Where were the salon products that you cant by over the counter? My hair did not feel clean, she used ice cold water, and wet my shirt all up. I was sat under the dryer for another hour. The whole time calling other nearby shops to see if they could finish me up asap. Rhonda finally calls me to her chair, never apologized for being late, saying she would knock a few dollars off, NOTHING. All she did was gossip about other people in the shop, which I didnt want to hear, I was so irritated with her at this point. She didnt listen when I said I wanted curls, and had the nerve to pop her lips when she had to put my curls in. I was charged 85.00 for a wash, flat iron/curl and trim. Mind you I'm coming from Antioch, and she knew this. It was a terrible experience.

I'm glad that nappy or not hasn't changed! (sacrasm) I was hoping to make an appointment to have my locks styled but knowing Rhoda, it might take 2 hours to finish, that's after she arrives late! This is very much a fact that she schedules 9am appt's but doesn't get to the shop until 11am. Who does that? Previously someone spoke about how she was quoted one price and was told another, once she was at the shop, yep, that's a fact! I was a victim of that as well. One thing that I admire about Lori, she gets her people in and out. She doesn't look the friendliest but she handles her business. I also read a review where someone said that the shop is overbooked and this is why they have some of their mishaps. Who's fault is that, that they are overbooked? PROFESSIONALS are suppose to be able to manage their schedules. IF NOT, they need to hire PROFESSIONALS that can take on the job. Ever worker there, majority women, have really bad attitudes. The men that walk in and out are catered too with big smiles and tight shirts. The women are looked at as if we aren't suppose to be there. They are too expensive especially when you've sat for approximately 6 hrs! The staff doesn't greet you when you come in. You have to walk around the wall, interrupt their side conversations to tell them that you're there. The person you make the appt with has random girls wash and dry your hair and you may sit under the hair dryer for hours upon hours. I would only recommend this place if you want to get your locks started(by Rhonda) or tightened (by Lori). I haven't seen anyone else do 'good' hairdos. I was a bit disappointed. Also, as for the good reviews that other have wrote about nappy or not, DON'T beleive it! The Nappy or Not Crew wrote, I can bet my life on it! When majority of the reviews are negative, believe it!

This is very interesting, I was just about to call for an appointment because I've been wearing weaves and braids for the last 2 years and I decided to look at some of the reviews since I've been out of the loop. Sounds like things haven't changed. I use to get my hair done at Nappy or Not just 2 years ago. I would come every other week and get treated as if I were no one. My biggest complaint was the shampoo girls. My hair never felt clean and there were several times that I had to have my stylists (Rhonda) wash my hair after it had supposidly been washed. Ever so often the prices would go up and down, ever so often I would have to wait 30-60 minutes for my stylists to arrive at the shop or even acknowledge that I was there. People didn't greet you when you came in (except for Lori :), don't ask who you here for, just bad customer service all the way around. I can go on and on about different things that they could improve. I really hope that they take these reviews to heart and have some kind of communication and customer service analysts come in and administer some training. They charge enough $ to do your hair, I know they can afford to go to or have a seminar about CUSTOMER SERVICE. BLACK, YOUNG,OLD, Skinny or FAT we still like to be treated right....

Pros: Lori and Rhonda when she on time and feel like doing hair.

Cons: Everybody and Everything else...

This salon is absolutely horrible!! I went after hearing their advertisements on the radio and I asked for asimple two color dye job (blonde on the top-red on the bottom) and when I walked out I looked like I could have been in the movie 'Powder'. My stylist decided that since I was lightening my hair we should lighten my eyebrows also and she proceeded to leave me under the dryer with peroxide on my hair and eyebrows and when I told her my eyebrows and scalp were burning she told me just to 'wait a few more minutes'. By When she finally washed the peroxide off my eyebrows had all but burned off and the skin around them was red and sore and clumps of my hair were coming out. I can't say enough horrible things about this salon except to say that after causing me PHYSICAL HARM she still wanted to be paid... I had to put neosporin on my eyebrows for three weeks.. This place is a joke..

5/17/2007\r\n\r\nI know who ever reads this probably cares very little about customer satisfaction, based on the other unsatisfied cleints. I'd just like your staff to know that I was going to be bringing my 6 year old son in to your shop this weekend for his first hair cut. But something told me to check you out a bit first. I am very disappointed to read about your tardiness, poor customer service, and high prices!!! It's already very hard to support minority based businesses as it is. (For the record i'm a minority too)! Hopefully someone will take the time to review my comments and share them with your staff personnel. FYI- some people do check before doing business with a company!\r\n\r\nBest Regards,\r\nSomeone else's potiential consumer

I went to Rhonda Glenn at ""Nappy or Not"" in Oakland to get a short hair cut and it was HORRIBLE. I wore many short hair cuts before but the one she did was bad. She didn't style my hair close to the picture that was in the book it was a simple up-to-date short hair cut instead she gave me an ancient hair cut from the 90's and the cut was Terrible. I will Never go back to her shop again. Her price was too high the hair style and cut was not worth $100, she was 30 minutes late to the appointment, and the atmosphere of the shop was not good customer service.

Nappy or Not have some cool natural styles that you won't see on anyone else. All there styles comes out different on everyone so they are not alike. My hair stylist is Rhonda and I have been going to her on and off for about 10 years and 5 shops. I am genarally in braids, but when I want a break I go to Nappy or Not for a fresh natural look. A little on the expensive side to be a regular but you will be satisfied with the outcome. When you go, be prepared to stay all day!

I should have known better. I read the reviews on this site the night before but still decided to give them a chance. I got there and my stylist walks in 15 minutes late. I was there for a sewn-in weave. The owner quoted me 200 bucks over the phone. She got started at about 10:45am. Everything was going fine. We ended at about 1:45pm which was kind of late in my opinion but what do I know??? The style was alright to be honest but it wasn't the best I've had and certainly not for 200 bucks. It was rather long and she asked me if I wanted her to cut it and I said yes. She cut it and I was a little bit happier. When it was all said and done I asked her so I owe you 200 right?? And She said 225 because of the cut. The she said something about how she guesses she should have told me that first. I agree cause a roommate of mine cuts hair and I could have got him to do it(I'm not from around here but from where I'm from if you get a weave then the cut and style are included)So I give her the $200 and she directs me to a bank up the street. I tell her I didn't know the cut was going to cost extra. She tells me that the original price of the 'do is $250 and I was quoted wrong. To make a long story short I didn't have to pay the extra 25 bucks. I will not be going back again and I will not recommend this place. I could have gotten mico braids somewhere else for about $150.

Pros: the interior is nice

Cons: expensive, out of the way, "so-so" work

My stylist name was Sonji. The hair style was supposed to be lock extensions. I was charged $500 ($400 for labor) with a $200 deposit. My appointment was for 9am, but Sonji did not start working on my head until 11am. Half way through the hairstyle, I was asked to wait another two hours while she worked on other costumers! This was actually a good thing because it gave me a chance to check out my hairstyle. There was nothing professional about Sonji's work, nothing. The parts were not straight and the sections were not uniform (some sections were too big while other sections were too small). The locks were too big and 'clown like' in appearance (I requested small locks). I have a magazine that has pictures of lock extensions. In every picture, the locks are small, the parts are straight, and the sections are uniform; that is what gives the style its professional appearance. While Sonji did offer to make some corrections, I decided not to let her finish the hairstyle; I should not have to tell a stylist, who is charging $400 for her work, to make straight parts and uniform sections. I decided not to throw good money after bad and take the $200 deposit loss. The whole experience was a waste of time and money!

Rhonda was my hair dresser. Before I have had others in the salon. I belive in giving people a second chance. \nI love getting my hair done and I think it would be better to find another shop because everytime I go to the shop to get the same style. Nothing new, I'm paying a diffrent price. The prices seem to be getting higher.\nMaybe the rent is going up??

First appointment - absolutely loved my color and new twists. Went back for my 2nd appointment, the stylist never showed up. Very frustrating. Plus I had to listen to some video that was popped into the television blaring with vulgar language. I can not go back.

Pros: Skill

Cons: Atmosphere, No Customer Service

To keep your hair up on the regular you need to take out a loan if you plan to go here. The service is good but the prices are too high. $80 for a press and curl, plus a trim that was not trimmed all through out my hair. Horriable and dissappointed! \n

The family of Nappy or Not have a wonderfully run, innovative look into the Natural hair.. understanding, achieving a modern style. Whether it is Nappy or Not. As far as the timeliness. I have yet to go anywhere my people act like they have a lot going on, mad about their appointments because they aren't recieveing the attention that they're looking for. To those people, stop making it hard on your stylist, doing things at the last moment, pointing fingers at others when it should be yourself.\nMy hat goes out to Rhonda Glenn, Cheryl , JT, Lori, Tosha , Jennifer, Sonji , and all those who work and support another Black Enterprise. We need more love, it keeps us on our toes.\n\nLove Sistahs got me on Loc Down\n

Pros: Creative, Frugal, Busy

Cons: Popular, Non-exclusive, Over-booked

Love the shop, atmosphere and all but getting an appointment with anyone other than the owner Rhonda could cause for a nasty taste in your mouth. Don't get me wrong, Rhonda is all that....but it's the other staff members that are not so worthy of praise. I do recommend this salon (highly) if you are going to see Rhonda. As far as the other ladies...one in particular(I won't mention names) might have you waiting for those flying pigs.

My hair has grown tremendously sent I start going to Nappy or Not. Currently I wear the double stranded twist. I have been wearing this style for about 2 years. It is the easiest hairstyle that I have ever worn. Recently, I let it down and found my hair to be the most luxurious it has ever been in my live. Rhonda and her staff was the most accommodating salon I have ever been in contact with. If you try it you might like it. Its my recommendation.

Nappy or Not has some of the most innovative hair styles that I've seen in the last 10 years they have been in business. They always seem to know the latest trends and always make everyone feel welcome and at home. Everyone that leaves the shop, have the most complimentary hair designs that conform to their clients needs and bring out the best in their overall appearance. The owner, Rhonda Glenn, does her utmost to make everyone feel at home and assures that each customer leaves satisfied with either an all natural hairstyle or chemically treated. FYI Nappy or Not was voted the ""Best Place to get your Hair Did in the Bay Area"" in 2001 and I feel that they should recieve this award every year. Because it is a multi-cultural salon that caters to all race, nationalities, creed, sex, caste, or color.
