Chef Jerry Huisinga came to Oregon from rural Minnesota by way of Minneapolis nearly thirty years ago. Shortly after arriving in Portland he went to work at Genoa, a restaurant of passionate "home cooks" who were at the forefront of Portland's changing food scene. He remained there for twenty-two years, expanding his knowledge of regional Italian food and enjoying the camaraderie and influences of his fellow employees. Together they contributed to the growing reputation of authentic Italian food that Genoa enjoyed in its heyday. During this time Jerry was honored to cook a Columbus Day dinner at The James Beard House in Manhattan and to study with his mentor Marcella Hazan at The French Culinary Institute. Jerry's goal is to bring great taste and good value to the customers while channeling simple Italian home cooking through the use of the freshest possible ingredients.

In Short
This bustling bar might appear to be a holding pen for the adjacent Caffe Mingo, but it's an equally popular local for Italian cuisine loving locals to enjoy an evening meal. Inside, twenty-somethings perch on low leather couches in the lounge, sipping inventive cocktails and flukes of sparkling Italian wines, while the more traditional types head to the intimate dining room for simply prepared dishes grounded on the tenets of Italian home cooking. To start, there are light bites of marinated olives, cold plates such as beet and arugula salad tossed with gorgonzola and toasted filberts, and hot plates of tender lamb meatballs. For heartier appetites, there's fresh homemade pastas and a grilled flat iron steak.

Terrible service.

by hollywood38

The party I was with could only speculate that the bartender was hung over. He was bloated, slow, distracted, forgot my drink order, and not at all concerned with being charming, or making any effort at good customer service. I had a $9 margarita that was 75% ice and then still only half full, so that was a bad start. It all ended by having to wait with empty plates and all of our drink glasses for a good twenty minutes while the bartender was in the open kitchen eating and throwing food at the chef. Despite the pleasant environment and decent food, I won't go back to Bar Mingo just to be ignored.

Pros: Good Food

Cons: Terrible Service

Horrible Service, Rude Server, I will not be back

by Jbobley

I was very dissapointed, and will not be back. The server insulted my wife after she was critical of his very slow service. There are plenty of other places around to check out, don't go to this dump.

Pros: great location

Cons: most everything else

Amazing food, wine, and a great date spot!

by smizz

I had been to Caffe Mingo several times and decided to try out Bar Mingo. The quality of food and service was impeccable. The server recommended a very nice bottle of Barbara D' Alba. We ordered a couple of the special entrees, which included swordfish and a sausage ravioli. Both items were delicious. From the regular menu with started with spicy goat cheese and an order of fresh oysters. The service and food were impeccable. I look forward to my next dining experience at Bar Mingo.

Pros: Fresh Italian cusine, good service, good wine

Rude Service, Over Priced Weak Drinks, I will not be back

by jplumber82

We were very unimpressed with the rude service (how long does it take to poor a weak drink), the price, and the annoying people behind the bar.

I will not go back, especially when theres so many other quality bars around the same part of town.

The place was a joke!

Pros: Location

Cons: Service, Drinks, Price
