In Short
It's a bakery, takeout place and cafe all in one. Prices and quality are upscale, thanks to dishes prepared using the ingredients stocked at Eli Zabar's gourmet food empire (Eli's Bread, Eli's Vinegar Factory, etc.--although descended from the West Side founders of Zabar's, he isn't affiliated with that store.) A checkered floor, black tables and mirrors decorate the small dining room, which attracts Upper East Side residents and tourists for sandwiches, salads and the "tower of bagel," as well as for the dinner menu's steak, grilled stuffed salmon and chicken paillard.

Delicious, as Eli Zabar is known for!

by HP Q. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 1,644

E A T Gourmet foods is a fantastic place to pick up some sandwichs or other prepared foods. The prices are high, but the food is really good. The bread is the most fantastic and famous part of the Eli Zabar family. You won't be disappointed. I've been told that their tuna salad sandwich is the best in the world. How can you not run over right now and try it?

market side overpriced as well

by noahd1

One reviewer said that you are better off on the market side than the restaurant side. It's just as expensive. My girlfriend ordered chicken salad, bread salad and a loaf of bread and it came to $77. Our mouthed dropped when she told us how much it was - we just left. What's in the food, the body of Christ?

Please don't go to E.A.T.

by spacenuke

My friends and I decided to give E.A.T. a shot cos it was close to the MET Museum where we were going and really regretted going there. The decor was kinda cool, but the food was so ridiculously priced. Expensive food is ok if it's good, but their food was definitely mediocre at best.

We walked past a diner on our way there, and we were left wondering why we didn't just go to the diner as we were walking out of E.A.T.

Pros: Ambience, proximity to the Met Museum

Cons: Price, bad and slow service

Ridiculously Expensive for Unappealing Food

by nycgrli

We ate in the restaurant one day having been satisfied with the deli previously. Wow we really should have stuck to the other side. First I asked the waitress for a Strawberry Lemonade, which I passed on the way in and she said they didn't have any, I was tempted to go to the deli side and get it myself, then my boyfriend ordered a grilled chicken salad, which was just that, literally a small piece of chicken on nothing but lettace for $18.95 unbelievable! Our bill was $80 for a simple lunch that we did not even enjoy. We will NEVER return back, the wait staff was not very pleasant either. Having eatten at hundreds of NYC restaurants I can honestly say this is one of the first I have been extremely dissapointed with.

Cons: Way overpriced, Disappointing Food, Unpleasant Wait Staff

way over rated!

by ahiatus

and way over priced!! i think that says it all. oh, and if you're there for drinks at 3:30 on a weekday afternoon, when the place is empty - and ask for a bread basket - they'll charge you $6. even though our drinks came to close to 20$ and the guy next to us ordered a 7$ bowl of soup and got bread included. where's the logic??

Good, not great

by jay

Ate breakfast on Sunday. Food was average. Service good. Nothing extraordinary, except the prices.

Better off buying from the market side instead of eating in the restaurant.

Pros: nice market

Cons: average food, above average prices

Too Expensive

by pixframe

From the time EAT opened it was overpriced.
There are many places in the surrounding area that
are just as good .. if not better ... that cost less.
