Very unhappy consumer

by unhappy c.

their service is SLOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW and they always say it will take a "couple of days... a day or 2 to get the part and a day to replace.. this is my 4th repair and every time they say a "couple of days" it turns into 2 darn WEEKS or more! Had they been honest and said it may take 2 plus weeks, I would have taken this piece of S**** laptop somewhere else.. NEVER BUY TOSHIBA and if you do.. dont get it repaired at Richards Computer.. (cause you will definietly be getting it repaired) ugggh!

Richards Computers misled me on repair cost.

by Vic M.

I dropped my laptop to fix a power issue. Was quoted $60.00 to analyze the problem and I agreed. After several days I called to check status and was told I need a new power plug and that it's $28.00 and the $60 labor fee. I agreed to the repair and was told parts had to be ordered. After 2 weeks I checked and was told it was being tested and someone would call me. No call so a few days later I called and was told it was ready. When I arrived to pick it up they had replaced the mother board for $289 and the labor was $120. When I stated I would never approve over $400 to fix a 5 year old laptop. I was told that it's on the ticket approved and that someone called me. No one ever called me. I was then told it's not their fault if I don't check my messages. No message left. They don't have time to keep calling people. they offered to remove the new part and put my old parts in it and I would have to pay the labor. This was a classic bait and switch. The technician admitted that the cost of the power plug was $28. The man was rude and threatened to throw me out. I purposely waited until his other customer left before I made my complaint. He tried to intimidate me by taking down the license plate of my car.

Stay away from Richards Computer

by Cal H. | insider Insider | Rank: 18,889

Although the techs are Richards Computer seem knowledgeable and helpful, their service fees are over the top. They wanted to charge me $50 for a laptop fan when another Toshiba service center sold it to me for $20. And then they wanted $70 to put it in. Go figure!

uses refurbished hard drive without customer knowledge

by Terence T.

I took my laptop to Richards Computers on Wednesday, July 29, 2009 because of a problem with the hard drive. Two days later, they informed me that the hard drive was bad and required replacement. So they backed up my data, installed a new hard drive (or so I thought), and reload the data. On Monday, they called twice to inform me that laptop was ready for pick up. I showed up only to be told to wait another hour-and-a-half because they had not finished all the work. The guy at the desk gave a lame excuse that things should not be rushed, blah blah blah... That's not the point. They told me it was ready for pickup. Twice! With no mention of the 'lame excuse'. So I came back two hours later to pick it up. They knocked $20 (cheap!) off for the inconvenience. Before leaving, I asked the other guy at the desk what hard drive was in my laptop. He said it was a 100GB, 7200rpm HDD and nothing more. I assumed it was a new hard drive and left.

A week later, on Sunday, the laptop failed to start windows - login screen did not appear. Using the power button, I re-started the unit. It began to start and then systematically blacked out. Power was on, but nothing is showing after 10 minutes. I tried starting in Safe Mode only for it to spew a list of files and then stopped. I had a different tech expert look into it. He reported that the hard drive failed completely while initiating data transfer. Furthermore, the hard drive itself was an old, used device from HP. I was not informed that it wasn't new. Upon calling Richards Computers, they told me that it wasn't 'old'. It's 'refurbished'. That it is their practice to use 'refurbished' products, even if they didn't tell the customer about it. I returned for a refund. The 'lame excuse' guy had the nerve to claim that their hard drives never failed. It's 'refurbished', and it's not going to fail? Plus, he lied to me before, so I know he's lying again. Nonetheless, I received my refund.

I had to file this report because Richards Computers' bad service had cost me all the work I had in the laptop. The reports, drawings, manuals, e-mails and other important documents for my work - all gone. Yet Richards Computers will continue to use 'refurbished' devices, old and used disguised as 'new'. They will rip-off everything that's important on your computer. Do business with them at your own risk.

Poor repair capabilities

by Christopher A.

This business will charge you $100 for a diagnostic even if they don't know what the problem is. They asked me to spend $450 on a laptop motherboard when I suspected that the video daughterboard was the problem. I'm not a tech so I can't test it, but I ended up wagering $60 on the daugherboard that I found on e-bay and put it in myself. The laptop works fine now, no thanks to Richards Computer. They refused to even explain why they wouldn't try just to put in the daughterboard.

very bad experience

by Gail T.

Do not let these people anywhere near your computer!!
They basically ruined a perfectly good laptop of mine. I have now had to replace it. All I wanted was the fan cleaned. After they kept it for 30 days originally, I got it home and it had a problem it didn't even have when I took it in. I took it back and they supposedly fixed it. When I got it home it still didn't work so I took it back. To make a very long and frustrating story short, after 4 attempts to fix it and numerous new problems that came up every time they had the laptop, I finally gave up. They lied to me on several occasions and the manager was very rude to me.
I would not recommend Richards Computers to anyone.

Great service

by Aditi D. | insider Insider | Rank: 17,135

I took my laptop to Richards Computer to fix a keyboard problem I was experiencing. The technician attending me on the phone immediately fixed up a date for getting the keyboard replaced. I got a call from them as soon as the keyboard was available and it was just a 10 minute visit to the shop. Extremely professional people.
