I have never had a worse experience in donating items to an organization as I have just experienced with a coordinated/scheduled pick up by THE SALVATION ARMY. In todays environment, there are many reasons to give and donate. In an attempt to downsize and moving, I made arrangements to have a pick up of items; washer and dryer, dining room furniture, computer work station, breakfast nook, womens clothing and shoes, kitchen appliances, household decorations, stoneware, dishes, glasses...............all items were in like new condition and would have served individuals in need. I picked the Salvation Army based upon a friends recommendation. I will not consider the Salvation Army again. I understand rules, time constraints and decision making. I dont understand lack of tolerance for the unexpected. They provide a window of arrival, I live in an apartment building so the parking, elevator, and the front desk assistance was not available immediately ( they were expecting them but also helping someone else). The two men were respectful but not helpful, threatening to leave without picking up the items, and actually didnt take everything because it was not listed on the piece of paper! Denying others the benefit of items that could make things lives better is not my idea of "a salvation army".

I have shopped @ the Thrift Shop. It is second to none w/ regard to great finds: hit or miss. I'm planning to donate items to this location on Saturday.

I always think of donating the old items when I am planning on replacing my household items. No matter it is as large as a piece of furniture, or as small as linens and clothes, it is better to donate them rather than throw them in trash. The Salvation Army has many operation locations, but you need to call 703-642-9270 (central dispatch) to schedule a pick up for your donation items. You also need to check with the operator and confirm that they accept the items you want to donate, as they do not accept certain items such as mattresses. The items need to be in clean and good working condition. On the scheduled pick-up date, you can either stay at home to open the door for them, or just set the donation items outside, clearly marked "Donation for The Salvation Army". Their workers are not allowed to enter your home. Therefore, you will have to move the items out for them, or leave the items in the garage where the movers can easily access. They will not be able to help you move large items (such as a couch) out of your living room, for example. They will give you a receipt for tax deduction, or leave it at the door if you are not there. I really encourage everyone to do so. It is very convenient for you, you can get tax deduction, it reduces the number of still usable items to go to the landfill, and it helps them generate the resources they need to provide assistance in their charity programs. I highly recommend that you check out their website and give them a call when you have unwanted (but still usable) items to donate to a good second home.

PROS: No cost, convenient, tax deductible, charitable, waste reduction.
CONS: They cannot help you move items out of your house.
