Had my first appointment this morning at 10 am. I left extra early since it was raining a traffic was horrible. I made it in time though and gave the receptionist my paperwork, insurance card etc. as well as my co-pay that she asked for. Almost immediately I was taken back to a room by a very nice lady. My thoughts were "Yeah, no long waiting to get in". (I did bring my book with me today thinking I would need it in the waiting room) LOL. So she puts me in my room and tells me someone will be in. After a few minutes I see that perhaps I do need my book after all. I start to read and watch the time along the way. 50 minutes goes by and I have not seen another human being in my room. I have had 50 minutes of solitude. As a mother of a 4 yr old that is a rare pleasure to have 5 minutes let alone 50. However, I really had very high hopes of becoming pain free or at least have a little relief. The reviews I had read were good for the most part. As I walked down the hall to the front, I passed 2 people working at the nurses station and the nice receptionist told me to have a nice day. Yes, I guess as long as I was back there she would assume I actually saw the doctor or maybe even the nurse. But no, I saw NO ONE. At this point I figure if I am not RESPECTED enough to even be given the courtesy of someone letting me know the doctor is running late or he took off to play in the rain, the odds are I would not receive QUALITY care when someone managed to get to my room. Although at 4pm and not so much as a phone call to appologize or anything perhaps they think I am still in the little room waiting for my 10 am appointment that they had scheduled for me. I am still on my quest to find a caring doctor who might actually have the time and skills to help me. I really don't know if there are any like that in the corporate world where we are hearded like cattle and all that matters is the all mighty dollar. This doctor may actually be great. To bad I never got to find out. So I am off to the next one on my list and praying with everything I have that the next one will want to at least see me, and with any luck, do more then just hand me a pill and herd me out the door.

Because I am in desperate need of help, I have stayed with this office for far too much longer than I should have. My experience with them started with an unneccessary and extremely painful neurotomy in my neck that Dr. M convinced me I needed. It left me in much more pain than I had before and that lasted for over a year. What was worse, I could never again talk to him face to face about why his procedure that was suppossed to help me left me in such worse pain. HE WONT SEE PATIENTS THAT AREN'T GETTING EXPENSIVE PROCEDURES. All he does, all day long is procedures. He doesn't bother following up with his patients to see how they are doing or if what he did even helped. Money grubber much? Unfortunately it didn't end there. I continued seeing his PA for prescriptions. Only every time I showed up they had the prescription wrong, or they had lost it, or some other lame excuse for why they forgot to do their jobs again. I am disabled and arranging rides is a huge chore for me, yet they have no respect for my situation and continue to make getting my prescription extremely difficult. I really recommend going to a different doctors office, EVEN IF YOU ARE REFERRED TO DR M.

When I came to Dr. Mahendru, two weeks ago, I was barely walking with very little hope of leaving this phase in my life without needing back surgery. I am more than thankful for the hands of this extraordinary physician that with his precision in assessing his patients, his unique way of dealing with each one of them and his incomparable clinical care, brought me to a PAIN FREE stage within two appointments only.
The quality of medical care like any service delivery is to a large extent determined on the outcome. Many thanks to God Almighty, Dr. Vivek Mahendru, his nursing team and to all his staff. They took me from an excruciating pain due to a severe herniated disc to a very happy PAIN FREE stage without surgery.
If you are in pain, please make sure that you contact the Central Texas Pain Institute; you are going to find a personalized and precise care with advanced techniques to bring you life back again.

I have been seeing Dr. Mahendru for several years and I have found from day one that he is a remarkable physician. He personally saw me on my first appointment (versus staff members as indicated on several reviews I have read) and based on my file, films and numerous reports that were sent to him ahead of time (which he had reviewed prior to my visit) established a plan to work on my chronic pain situations. He has been with me through two cervical procedures (performed by very experienced highly recommended neurosurgeons) and has never once hinted at giving up on making me well. I would recommended him (and have) to numerous individuals and everyone of those individuals have been thrilled with his professionalism, knowledge and his "bedside manner".

I had to have a follow-up cyro procedure on my occipital nerve this morning and was suffering extreme anxiety prior to the procedure (a first for me). He and his staff were extremely compassionate and Dr. Mahendru, as usual did a splendid job from our first meeting before the procedure, through the procedure and after the procedure. HIS STAFF AS ALWAYS WAS SUPERB - I CAN NEVER SAY ENOUGH ABOUT THEIR CARE AND ATTITUDE)!! I would also say that I have NEVER experienced a lack of a return phone call nor a long wait to be seen at any of my appointments.

Quite frankly I am a little surprised at some of the very negative reviews of this Dr., his staff, etc. because as previously indicated I would highly recommend Dr. Mahendru to anyone in severe or chronic pain - he is the best!!

I'm shocked by the negative comments about Central Texas Pain Institute and feel I must add what I know of the practice of Pain Management. I hope my experience will help others.

I've suffered from several chronic pain conditions for a long time and became disabled in 2003. I've "visited" many Pain Management Practices and refused treatment at many of them due to a presumption pain patients are drug abusers.

I met personally with Dr. Mahendru for my first appointment, because that's exactly what I requested. If you don't specify you must meet and interview the physician, it's normal and accepted practice in this field of medicine to see an MA, NP or PA on an initial or followup visit.

I was satisfied with his respectful attention and also that he understood my complex conditions, so we agreed he would be my physician of choice for interventional proceedures, but prescriptions would continue to be handled by my Internist.

When I desperately needed a nerve block and had no insurance while waiting for the Social Security Administration to process my Disability claim, the Central Texas Pain Institute agreed to make a compassionate allowance, so I paid for only a very small portion of the usual charges.

The American Association of Pain Mangement (AAPM) determines many of the requirements and sets boundaries that are (in my opinion) cumbersome and interfere with appropriate relationships between PM practioners and patients. The individual doctors are over regulated by several government agencies and the practice guidelines are really set by lawyers, not Pain Management Professionals.

To sum it all up, Dr. Mahendru is trying to make expert care available to the greatest number of patients and his expertise is best utilized performing interventional proceedures. If you want hand holding and require an MD to perform that function, you should probably seek it from another field of medicine.

The problem lies with AAPM policy being set by lawyers, the conventions frequently devote more time to "Protecting Your Practice" than the practice of good old fashioned medicine. This "fault" is systemic, not particular to any one physician or practice... so my suggestion is be an educated patient, and (except in emergencies) interview physicians before signing on as a patient and understand the "rules of the game".

I've been helped a great deal by Dr. Mahendru's skill, and although there were issues with some assistants... I decide what I will and will not "try", as I'm the only one who can really understand my own complex medical problems.

If you do NOT DO the work and have a bad experience, I'm very sorry for your pain but you may have forgotten that medical treatment is a partnership and you have the ultimate responsibility for the medical care you choose to accept.

Dr. Mahendru has exquisite skill with injections and requisite investment in training and equipment to perform complex and dangerous proceedures with as much safety and human kindness as can be asked of any highly trained professional in our convoluted and "unhealthy" medical system.

Between the lawyers and government interference, the current practice of Pain Management in the USA is like asking a mechanic to diagnose your car while wearing blinders with four supervisors watching their every move and one hand tied behind his (or her) back.

The dedicated people who perservere, despite the regulatory and legal restrictions are just like the rest of humanity, some excellent, others adequate, some mediocre and others who are "in it" only for the money or prestige of the profession.

Dr. Mahendru is a caring, well trained physician who deserves far better reviews than those I saw posted here. Educate yourselves to be a responsible partner in your medical care and don't blame problems in our current medical system on one particular individual.

After 10 years of "living life in bed "due to chronic pain, seeking the best doctors , enduring many surgeries, and finding no solutions, I finally found relief with Dr. Mahendru. I went from rolling into his office in my wheel chair ,originally pursuing the SCS ,and left that day feeling instant pain relief.

For years I was told there was nothing that could be done about the pain in my sacrum region. I was unable to sit , walk or stand without severe pain. I went home to rest after my procedure and that evening as I began to transfer to my wheel chair realized I could bear weight with out buckling under from pain.

I stood erect for the first time in years, and then took my first step ! I was so elated, I could hardly contain it. I was able to freely take another step with a normal gait, something that was impossible before the injection.

My next visit to Dr. Mahendru's was without my wheelchair. He was very happy with the results and instead of proceeding with the surgery, decided to see how I did with physical therapy and other alternatives. I was impressed that he did not want to move forward with the surgery, and wanted to do what was least invasive.

That was three months ago; I have since put my wheelchair in the garage and have not looked back! If you want caring, knowledgeable, and expert care, then the Central Texas Pain Institute is the place for you!

I had such a great expereince at Central Texas Pain Institute! I have been in extreme pain for years and have been to a couple of specialists and no one has been able to help me.....until Dr. Mahendru. I also see Paul Mitchell and he is a doll, very understanding. Thank you Central Texas Pain Institute!

Pros: Staff and time it takes to get an appointment

Cons: Next to railroad track

.

I have the same concerns as many others on this forum as far as actual time spent with the doctor. However, the past three years I have dealt with intercostal neuralgia and the pain that it creates. If anyone knows of another doctor that knows how to treat this condition I would love to try them. I certainly would appreciate that information,

OK, SO I WAS CONCERNED AFTER READING THE BAD REVIEWS. I THOUGHT "WHAT HAVE I GOTTEN MY SELF INTO, AGAIN "?
I HAVE CERVICAL SPINAL STENOSIS AND HERNIATED DISCS. NOT ONLY HAVE I SUFFERED FOR 10 YEARS DUE TO BEING MIS-DIAGNOSED BUT MY NEUROLOGIST TOLD ME IT WOULD BE A WASTE OF TIME TO HAVE A MRI OF MY SPINE AFTER I TOLD HIM I HAD SEVERE NECK PAIN. SO I GO TO THE SPINE AND REHAB CENTER AND SEE THE PA. HE REFERS ME TO DR MAHENDRU. NOT ONLY DO THEY GET ME AN APPOINTMENT RIGHT AWAY , THEY ARE VERY KIND AND UNDERSTANDING AND ENCOURAGING . ONLY AFTER MAKING MY APPT DID I READ THE BAD REVIEWS.
WOW WHAT A BUNCH OF GARBAGE. I GOT MY INJECTIONS THIS MORNING AND NO THEY ARE NOT MIRACLE WORKERS BUT ON A PAIN SCALE OF 1-10 I LEFT AT MAYBE A 2. YEA !!!!!
WHAT EVERYONE WHO READS THIS NEEDS TO KNOW IS THAT I HAVE OTHER MAJOR MEDICAL PROBLEMS AND WAS SOOOOOO DESPERATE FOR PAIN RELIEF, NOT PRESCRIPTIONS. ANYONE CAN TAKE NARCOTICS BUT IF IT YOUR TRUE DESIRE TO BE PAIN FREE, PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT LISTEN TO THESE BAD REVIEWS. I SAW THE SAME DR THAT THE REVIEWS WERE WRITTEN ABOUT I CANT BELIEVE THIS IS THE SAME DR. I TRULY THANK GOD THAT I GAVE THE DR A CHANCE.
IF YOU HAVE BEEN MIS-DIAGNOSED BY OTHER DRS AND NEED PAIN RELIEF, I PRAY THAT YOU CALL THIS DR. !!! GOOD LUCK !

I have had moderate to severe back pain for two years. After seeing two other doctors, I was referred to Dr Mahendru through my Chiropractor (a very good doctor), who highly recommended him, saying he has known Dr Mahendru for years and is friendly with him. Due to the referral between doctors, my chiropractor told me that Dr Mahendru was told about my case and he would see me. I went to Dr Mehendru's office (60mile one way trip) and after a wait, I saw a PA. I explained that my chiropractor said I was to talk to Dr Mahendru. I was told by the PA that was not going to happen. After a five minute conversation of things Dr Magendru was already suppose to know, I was told they could not help and shoved me out of the door. Even my Chiropractor was surprised and shocked by this treatment. I cannot believe, even after a referral through another doctor friend, that I was treated like this and was not even seen by the doctor. I have never been treated like this by any medical staff or doctor. I will let everyone I know to stay away from this QUACK who apparently does not even think you are worth seeing himself or deserve any help/treatment.

We all have unique expectations in what we value from medical professionals and their office staff members. I value efficiency, treatment efficacy, treating physician's attention to my needs/diagnosis, knowledgeable and positive office staff members, and honesty from a doctor. I got all of these from this clinic and Dr. Mahendru. Prior to my injections I've seen him reviewing my medical file and I'd bet good money he is a speed reader, as he's a smart guy, AND he sees the same diagnoses(plural)/same types of patients DAILY. It probably doesn't take long for him to determine what procedure may best benefit each individual patient. I know this from experience. I have been to him for over a year now and recently, I was scheduled for another injection;I've had 3 injections. He read my file, as usual. Then he SAT down with me and discussed my symptoms and what his recommendations for my pain management because he did not believe I would benefit from another injection. On my prior visits to the Surgicenter, he read my file, asked me how I'm doing as he walked by to attend to business of preparing for injections because he saw that my symptoms may be relieved by an injection. My experiences contradict ALL reviews that say he doesn't consider patients' needs. WRONG. This doctor KNOWS what he is doing and has confidence in his work. Also, I love his staff. I was greeted with a smile from EVERYONE. I was welcomed by the surgical staff and treated with respect and in an efficient manner. At the end of each visit, I happily filled out an evaluation of my experience. I believe this office takes these evaluations seriously, as I have never been disappointed with the level of superior care I have received. I am extremely pleased with my experiences!!!!!!

Wow, I read the reviews re: this dr and his staff! I must say that I'm appauld by what some of these patients have to say. I've been going to Dr. Mahendru's office for a little over 2 years now & I must say that I appreciate all that he has done. I admit that it is hard to get thru his upstairs office at times, but the staff has always been good to me. They've had a recent change in their facility. I had gotten an injection in his downstairs office; the receptionist, the nurses and dr.mahendru were terrific. I was well informed about what was going on with my pain and well attended to. He was running about 20-30 min behind, but i understand there are times that this is going to happen. Who knows what's going on with him & another patient for him to get behind like that. But once you're in, things go well and quickly. Some people complain because of money. Nothing in this world is free. I understand that the cost of healthcare is expensive. Don't think he doesn't want to help you if you don't pay. They have a system to help you with payment plans. Overall, I think his staff is great and appreciate his help!

It is true, Dr. Mahendru doesnt sugar-coat anything, but do you really want a dr that does? He gives it to you straight! I appreciate that very much. I have been going to his office for about 1.5 years and he has greatly helped me deal with the pain that I have. He has always been professional, a good listener, and always wants to help me. It is tough getting a hold of his office these days, but a busy dr is a good sign...I would not go to a dr that wasnt busy or has no patients. Also, you cannot blame a failed procedure or injection on the dr. Not all aches, pains, and syndromes can be "fixed" no matter who you go see. And can you blame him for wanting his $$ up front? Would you just lend a complete stanger your car? Well, he has to get paid for his services and equip. as well. If you have insurance, use it. They will work with you and Dr. Mahendru's staff has great payment plans with no interest fees. I highly recommend Dr. Mahendru! He doesnt tell you anything but the truth and he strives to help even with impossible situations (like mine, 2 collapsed discs, 1 herniated disc, DDD, and tears on 4 levels of my low back). With all the dr and surgeons I have seen in the past, Dr. Mahendru is my favorite!!! Dont blame your situation on him, he wants to help you!

I have 2 herniated cervical disks. I was referred by my spine doc who said that Mahendru would have a "consultation appointment" with me first - He didn't. - He spoke to me for less than 30 seconds - said that the spine doc had instructed him -steroid injection in cervical spine. Did not ask me anything about my pain. The procedure was done with IV "sedatives" in 3 minutes. Afterwards, he stated with a disgusted tone, that was "the best that could be done, due to your squirming"- his words exactly, which felt offensive. After all, he's the anesthesiologist, he could have provided a way of making it less painful. The woman in the adjacent curtained area was also receiving a steroid injection in C7. She had lots of jewelry, expensive clothes, Blackberry and a tanned, suited husband who complained that she should have been brought in ahead of me. (Don't know why) Mahendru spent 15 minutes time with them, even looked at her MRI , and told the nurse to give her "narcotics" with her procedure. I learned a bit by overhearing their conversation -in particular, bring a well-spoken, well-dressed man with you. Keep him there thru-out the procedure - In which case, I don't think that Mahendru would have insulted me, and I might not feel like I just recieved a drive thru procedure with no concern for me. The staff was kind and efficient -but I felt that he treated me like a dumb animal. Won't know if the injection itself helped for another week - Neither he nor his staff offered any prescriptions for physical therapy, or ideas on painkillers. When I asked about cervical traction, I was referred back to the spine doc, -who had told me that the pain specialist would help....I had to pay $300.00 out of pocket.

I've only had one of the injections so far so I can't say if they work or not (so far, not)... What I am here to write about is the lack of quality personal attentiveness and bedside manner of this clinic. Like other reviews have stated, they Never return phone calls much less call to see how their patient is actually doing post-op (appalling), there are no treatment options here other than these painful injections (??), there are no private rooms like a normal Dr's office but a curtain to separate the patients while they are being asked personal questions so you can hear everything the person next to you is saying (!!), nobody ever knows who you are or what your problems are (including the Dr!) Yeah, then there's him- just like another reviewer said, this Dr. is So condescending! The staff is all Very nice but seem to be Completely overwhelmed and confused or just incompetent. They're training new nurses right now but this place is so chaotic I bet it's always like this. The atmosphere is like the ER. Everyone is in a rush to get you in and out the door as quickly as possible and at most you might get to talk to the Dr. maybe 3 minutes max. I am just stunned by the lack of quality personal attentiveness at this clinic. I will update this post if the shot works or not and/or the patient care improves.

I found Dr. Mahendru to be very professional and considerate. He presented himself as intelligent and knowledgeable, and he answered all of my questions fully with genuine intrest. His staff was wonderful during my many procedures holding my hand throughout. The Dr. always cracked a joke to help ease my nerves. All the people who have complaints should maybe take some responsibility for the situation and the outcome of it. From my experience I find the majority of medical facility staff persons to be unreliable and disorganized, and I have come to expect it. The waiting room can get a bit crazy at times, but overall Dr. Mahendru had a good impression on me. I would definetly recommend seeing him

i learned the hard way that unless you want to just want to get steroid shots that sorta work , sorta don't, for a short period of time you shouldn't go here. They farmed me out to a chiropractor w/out any diagnosis and were irritated i didn't want to go and spend $100 a week for more than a few months to see him. All w/out a diagnosis. It was really important to them to remind me over and over again that I should not be in pain and ask me if I'm depressed. No, i'm only 35 and i can't move my neck! VERY dissapointed. They are extremely condescending, although support staff was very friendly.

I have been taking my mother to Dr. Mahendru since June to try to find a solution to her pain problem. We have had to go through the proper processes of visiting with all specialists involved (neurologist, neurosurgeon, orthopedist, etc., even chiropractic and acupuncture) to be we are trying the right treatment choices. Cortisone shots don't work, and we are on the 3rd pain medication and it is starting to help.

Don't get me wrong, she's not cured yet, and it has been a painful journey, but she is old and VERY medically complex and the options available are limited. They have been very thorough in all testing to be sure we are proceeding safely.

All of Dr. Mahendrus staff members have been kind, informative, and professional. We have waited a few times, usually in the examining room (which can be chilly at times, bring a sweater!) while they checked on issues that arose during our examination or discussions, but I have spent far less time waiting in his office than I have in many other doctor's offices. I take her to an average of 4-6 doctors a month, if that gives you a reference point. I waited longer at the lab we had to go to before a procedure was done, and even though we were late because of that, Dr. Mahendru's office worked us in.

All in all, we have been happy with our journey so far. Dr. Mahendru is not the most "warm and fuzzy" doctor I've met but he has not, at any time, been uncaring or condescending, nor have any of his staff. I've had docs that were kind and sweet who were terrible at giving the patient any actual information, diagnosis or treatment. I much prefer the way Dr. Mahendru works.

My mother has never had a phone call go unreturned and they are responsive when she asks for help.

Yes, they do give seem to queue up shots for 2 patients at a time. That seems fairly efficient. I suppose if you want to wait longer they could do only one at a time but my guess would be you can't have it both ways.

It is impossible to get thru to the staff at the Dr. M's. It is always taking you to a voice mail, and do they call back? Maybe the next day, so you sit in pain waiting on them to call you back. Where the hell is the staff? What are they doing? There are two of the receptionist and I watch them in the office and they just let the phone ring even when they don't have a customer standing in line. I am very disappointed. So sorry to have gone there......

I could not believe the reviews here, and had to see for myself. Within 10 minutes of meeting him, I had been offended in three different ways. He didn't listen to me when I answered his questions and asked me to repeat myself a few times. He told me I must be mistaken about his nurse not having provided pre-op instructions (she had not), opting to call his patient a liar rather than even check with the nurse. I elected to forego the treatment and find a doctor who is more respectful of me as a person. If you want to be treated like a feeble-minded idiot, then this is the doctor for you.

While it is hard and frustrating at times to get his office to call back, Dr. Mahendru is always caring and considerate of me. His surgical staff is a delight and very professional. Dr. Mahendru never makes me feel like I am wasting his time - he always has time to listen to what I have to say. I appreciate him and would highly recommend him!

I have had chronic abdominal pain for 6-8 YEARS! 2 surgeries, 3 catscans, 6 ultrasounds, all the pain meds I could ever want...NO RELIEF! Until I met Dr.Mahendru and John. This team has helped me see life without pain. I am so very thankful for the nurse who holds my hand while getting shots to John listening to me cry, and Dr.M who talks to me like a person and not a patient. Even when I call on the phone I get great compassionate service. THANK YOU CENTRAL TEXAS PAIN INSTITUTE!!!
