Michelles two key rings (giant locking carabiners) look like your middle school janitors, weighing in at 3lbs each. Each key has a fob on it with a name like Rocky or JD, evidence that since 2004, when she founded Coastal Pet Sitters, Michelles world has gone to the dogsand cats, horses, reptiles, birds, fish, and the small & furry (bunnies, Guinea pigs).

It should be noted here that sitting is a gross misnomer. If Michelle or any of her contracted sitters walk your dog(s), your dog(s) will be tired. Count on it. Michelle and the other pet sitters have a no-slack-walks/no-sniff & stroll policy (unless, of course, you have an elderly or injured dog). For healthy pooches, only Power Walking (2.2mph at least) is acceptable, faster even if your dog(s) participate(s) in Boot Camp to shed a few pounds and get back in shape. Sitters clock each and every walk to ensure no pet is shorted time. In fact, they often give a few more minutes than contracted. I know first-hand; I walked with Michelle for awhile, and even as cross-country runner, I had a hard time keeping pace with her. For 57 Michelle and her equally tall and fit sitters, theres no dog too big (170-200lb. Mastiffs, Wolfhounds, St. Bernards) and no dog too small (7-lb. Yorkies). While you will see a pet sitter walking a dog or two with a Bluetooth hands free earbud (necessity), you wont see them with iTunes earbuds, so they remain ever alert. And they always pick up the poop in scented biodegradable bags, and dispose of them properly.
If your dog is a Good Citizen, and accepted to Doggy Day Care, theyll roam free in the 1,750-sq. ft. area that looks like a tidy childcare center, painted happily with flowers on the walls, structured with baby gates (puppy rest areas), and complemented by a full kitchen, bath, and laundry facility, all echoing the Zen sounds of water gurgling from both indoor and outdoor fountains and Animal Planet that continuously runs softly on the TV in the back playroom, replete with toys, beds and a treadmill, and an exterior rocky walk (for sanitary peeing) that leads to a circular grassy area surrounded by chain-link reinforced fences offering a glorious view of rainforest-like gardens (and koi pond), which are so breathtaking, the City of Leucadia would like to feature the gardens in its 2010 Leucadia Garden Walk.
If one of Michelles sitters is contracted for overnight stays at your home a popular choice given that housesitting is included free of charge -- they adhere to the strictest of rules, including not imbibing any of the clients food or drink. They also leave your home cleaner than it was when they arrived, performing light housekeeping, taking out the trash, watering plants, and bringing in mail, newspapers and packages left on doorsteps.
If you are too busy to schedule regular grooming appointments, Michelle and her sitters will recommend a groomer, and if needed, they will pet-taxi your pups during the day while youre at work or on vacation.
Michelle still responds quickly to inquires from clients, from her website, and from Pet Sitters International referrals, and she and her team are extremely communicative with clients who prefer daily text messages, or notes on the counter, especially when medications need to be administered.
