The one standout on the menu is the pecan crusted trout. I only sampled the dish, but even from my tiny portion I could tell that the sweet pecan flavors meshed perfectly with the delicate trout meat creating a remarkable balance that simply isn't present in most menu items. The other menu item that is definitely worth ordering is the jalapeno cheese grits. I missed the hints of jalapeno, but they have a rather divine preparation of the actual grit that should not be missed. I wish my cheese grits came out with a similar consistency, but thankfully, Eatonville isn't that far away.

Items that were solid but did not blow me away included the fried catfish, the pork chop, the collard greens, the fried oyster po-boy, the mahi mahi, the mac and cheese, and the mashed potatoes. I have also tried the gumbo, and I was simply not a fan. Other than the aforementioned grits, my favorite side has been the Cajun fries.

Eatonville sports an upstairs and downstairs bar, and the individuals working the place are remarkably friendly. The specialty drinks amply match the theme of the restaurant. On Friday night, they had a nice down-tempo jazz band.

If you are a literary fan, you will catch the clear homage to Zora Neale Hurston's work "Their Eyes Were Watching God" - the space even has a couple of rocking chairs! Depending on your appreciation of such themes, you might be impressed with the ambience of this restaurant.

Overall, Eatonville is a nice, casual addition to the U Street neighborhood. Given the character of the restaurant, it is a perfect fit for its location. Although I subjectively believe the menu is still a bit spotty, it is a given that I'll be back for Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPAs and that pecan crusted trout.

Pros: Great trout and had dog fish head on tap!

Cons: nothing
