Although the food was great, I had a terrible experience at this establishment tonight... The waitress was fun and attentive, but as we retreived our checks we have found out that the servers tips were added to another table that happened to be my mother in laws table of three peope. I had made reservations early in the day for a total of eight people, and later discovered that two people in our party had cancelled, so I immediately called the resturaunt to let them know that their was only seven people in our party. Well my mother in law decided to come an hour and a half later, only to sit at another table and not greeted with hushpuppies as they usually do. Well once we received our checks we saw that the waitress has added her tip, which wasn't an issue. Then my mother in law notice that she also had a tip charge of an amount that the waitress added to her table, and had decided to have tip taken off of her bill, to make a long story short... a manager approach the table with the ugliest attitude and stated that basically he didnt find that their a need to take the tip off her bill, so I then demanded that the tip be taken off, he did so, and then call the cops on me for a 9.00 tip. Isnt this something, to be banned from an establishment (SOBER) that has no sence of direction from their managers. I am so looking forward till tomorrow when I contact their GM, the BBB, and Human Relations. The sad part is that I was totally embarrassed that most of the people that sat down at iur table for my husbands 40th was public officials.

I thought this place was a delicious place to eat seafood, though it didn't really wow me like I was expecting from the other people that had gone. It seemed a little pricey for what it was. I'm not arguing that it wasn't delicious, but just a bit of a disappointment based on what people had told me previously. The more money you pay, the more delicious the meal is, I can vouch for that though. Very crowded usually but service is still about as expected.

So, I had heard good things about 42nd Street Oyster Bar from co-workers and the boyfriend and I went there for "date night" this past Saturday.

Things started out well...the hushpuppies were very good. As in "eat way too many of them" good. That will become important later.

We order the crab cake appetizer. And they mean it literally. It was one crab cake. Unbelievable. The crab cake itself was ok, but the cocktail sauce that came with it was awful. Just bland.

Our drinks came out about the same time and what can I say. My drink (rasberry lemon drop) tasted ok. But it didn't have hardly any liquor in it. The boyfriend's Key Lime Martini was completely tasteless. It didn't taste like vodka. It didn't taste like limes. It literally did not taste like anything. And again, very watered down.

We were feeling less than enthused by this point. The bf had been going on all week about getting the fried seafood platter...and he probably would have been happier if he had. Instead, we both ordered off of the evening's specials. They were not special. (I would definitely stick with the regular menu and things they know how to cook.)

Anyway, he had the grouper with shrimp and artichoke hearts. The shrimp was overcooked, but the flavor paired nicely with the artichoke. We both liked it. However, the grouper underneath was bland.

My entree was also hit or miss. I had shrimp and fennel ravioli topped with scallops and a very cheesy sauce. The scallops were also slightly overcooked, though not enough to be rubbery. And they did not pair well at all with the sauce. The ravioli, on the other hand, was pretty good and did go well with the sauce.

My meal ended with my side dish, which I have to rave over. I didn't want a salad, so I got the black eyed peas instead. They are cooked with country ham and salty salty. Like having your own personal salt lick. Which, unlike the vast majority of the population, is just how I like them. I loved them, but you have been warned. :-)

Anyway, we did not take a chance on dessert. And I ended up being glad about that when the hushpuppies did not want to settle. Seriously, they are really good, but don't overindulge. Stop yourself after 3 or 4.

Gotta say, the meal was overpriced for the overall quality of the food. Will not be going back when there are other, better restaurants downtown.

You can't go wrong with anything you order at this place ( the crabcakes need a little work). You gotta try the Key Lime Pie! All the food is cooked to order and served by some of the friendliest people you will ever meet. If you have any questions about the seafood or anything on the menu, just ask ANYONE that works there. Also, Don't miss out on the best bands the area has to offer. I have been to this place many times and have NEVER been disappointed.

Pros: Freshest Seafood, Best Staff, Cold Beers & Steamed Oysters

Although we don't get out as much as we used to due to 3 children at home, when we do it's off to 42nd St for Food, Beverage, and Fun. The service and food have always been great and the management team is always assisting staff which I think is awesome. You just don't see that as much these days in other places. There is never a cover charge to listen to the bands on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Some of our favorite items are 42nd Street Oysters, buffalo shrimp, Shrimp Creole, Ahi Tuna, Crab Dip and steamed oysters. The last time we were in the oysters were from Pamlico sound and they were unbelievable. We love to sit at the oyster bar, as it is very laid back and a lot of fun. I can't wait to get a babysitter and get back. Yall rock 42nd Street!

I LOVE the food here, especially the Seafood Fettuccine. Plus, they have an excellent selection of beer (over 100 different craft beers). The live bands can be hit or miss, but are usually pretty decent. I watched a State/Carolina game there last February and even they stopped playing to watch the last few minutes of the game

After reading the previous review I have come to the conclusion that the review was written by a former employee who was terminated or a jealous competitor with nothing better to do than to hate on another restaurant.
We have lived in the raleigh area for 20 + years and have always enjoyed our experience at 42nd Street. We try to make it there atleast 2-3 a month. The staff has always been very courteous, the food has been delicous and the service outstanding. I find it hard to believe that someone has come here for so long and never enjoyed themself. They have it all. Fun atmosphere, great food and spirits, and a vibrant staff. I would reccomend 42nd Street to anyone looking for it all. If you have to wait for a table, there is a lively lounge for you to grab some cocktails and appetizers while you wait. Just writing this review is making me crave those suculent gulf oysters.

We love this place. Have been going here for years and have never had a bad meal. Service is among the best I've had in Raleigh. One suggestion, lose the live music. If people are paying $25 or more for a plate of food, they don't need to be screaming over the top of a bunch of whiny, beyond middle-aged, rockstar wannabees playing at blistering loud volume. I don't know why so many venues insist on having live music. It's not always necessary or fitting. This place is too classy to promote musical garbage. The natural noises of this place are part of what gives it so much character.

I have never submitted comments about a restaurant I have gone too, until now. 42nd st merits any accolades it gets! Fantastic service, great atmosphere and a huge kitchen (most of which is in plain sight). Best of all the food was exceptional. I started with the Baked Oyster Sampler that consisted of 8 oysters prepared 4 ways. Next I had the Seafood Bisque and it was great. I would like to have had the special "Cioppino" a San Francisco tomato based Italian-styled seafood stew with shrimp, scallops, white fish, oysters, lobster, peppers and onions but I didn't have any room left. I saw a bowl if it go out and it looked amazing. Thanks to Charles for the great service and I will be back if ever in the area again.

My friends and I were out at 42nd on Thursday, July 24,2008. We were having a good time until it was time to cash out. When I received my tab, I noticed I had been charged for something that I had not ordered. When I brought this to FREDA's attention, she became very irritated. After going back and fourth with Freda, she snatched the bill out of my hand and said "f it". I then proceeded to find the manager and told him about Freda's rude and non-professional behavior. As Freda stood to the side line with her hands on her hips, and her face tighter than a knotted rope, the manager apoligized for her behavior and took care of the bill. It was pointed out to me by my friend who attends 42nd every Thursday, that this was not the first time Freda had done this. My advice to anyone who would like a nice, courteous, professional waitress is to request another waitress if you are seated in Freda's section. And my advice to Freda, is check your attitude, learn how to handle yourself in a professional manner, if not find a NEW JOB, and please get a makeover.

Do not go here for the live music. For some reason, they have security guards who watch every move you make and will ask you to leave if you are dancing? The band seemed good but too bad they are playing at a venue that doesn't allow fun? While being pushed out the door we were told we were "bumping into people" and it seemed to be an issue that I wanted to close out my tab before getting kicked out? Really rude experience and I wouldn't advise going there.

I don't know what has happened to this place but it has gone down hill. Food is mediocre, served undercooked, overcooked, cold. It's priced for the way it used to be not as it is now. I can get a better meal at Golden Corral for less money.

Went to 42nd Oyster Bar for our 3rd wedding anniversary with a large group of friends. We were very pleasantly surprised to see no problem getting a reservation for a party of 10 at peak dining hours. Parking was a breeze at the lot accross the street even though it was a Friday night. When we arrived our table was ready and the hostess quickly lead us to the table with a great view of the entire restaurant. The service was UNBELIEVABLE as we never had a empty drink or plate on the table. The seafood was delicious and "spot on" as they say in England. Those who ordered the steak enjoyed it and said it was on par with a fine dining steakhouse steak. Overall we could not have been happier with the food and service so we would HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS RESTAURANT to anyone.

Although I would not call this place a "very upscale" restaurant, it was a great experience and a lot of fun to eat here. The food was terrific, a great place for seafood. The service was outstanding, and the staff was helpful for our group to find a nice after dinner establishment. I will make it a point to visit here again next time I'm in Raleigh.

I wrote a very lengthy review, but it got flushed by a CitySearch server error, so instead of retyping, I will be brief.

The food was excellent, particularly the pan seared tuna and key lime pie.

However, I have no idea why this place is described as upscale. At 8pm on a Friday night, for every person in a tie, there was a goober in jeans and baseball cap. Also the state official license plate display is anything but classy.

So, great food, and I recommend it, but the "upscale" tag is definitely incorrect.

Well, after reading reviews of 42nd street from other so - called customers, I will have to say that I have been dining there for almost 6 years since I moved into the area. By far, they have the best seafood i've had in north carolina, the restaurant has always been extremely clean (the cleanest restrooms in Raleigh), and service has always been outstanding. Occasionally, I stick around late for the entertainment. It's always a good energy atmosphere to relax and enjoy a few tasty beverages from their beer selection. I would reccommend this place to anyone looking for it all. Other reviews I've read about this place must be from competiters who are trying to take their business. Don't believe em'. You'll love this place! 18 years of operation is pretty impressive!

42nd Street, I agree can be over priced. They either do it really great or sub par. Seems there is no meeting in the middle. There are a few items that are absolutley the best around, the Buffalo Shrimp, The Tuna Special and the crab dip is amazing. My husband eats raw oysters and he is always happy with those especially during happy hour (.25 cent oysters.) The fried food is a little bland. We mostly eat in the cocktail area. The waitresses are all great. They do a really good job of serving you even when it is standing room only. The drinks are great but, there are never any specials. I think they need to update the uniforms. Those waitresses are cover from neck to toe and seem uncomfortable and hot. It can't help business to have your money makers so covered up. Me and my husband both agree the attire is a little dated. But great atmosphere 90 percent of the time! Steve and Debbie

I think they need to update the uniforms. Those waitresses are cover from neck to toe and seem uncomfortable and hot. It can't help business to have your money makers so covered up. Me and my husband both agree the attire is a little dated. But great atmosphere 90 percent of the time! Steve and Debbie

Pros: Great drinks and servers in lounge

Cons: Insincere management

.

We eat here at least once a month. We mostly go for the steamed oysters, blackened tuna and the GREAT beer selection. Also...BUFFALO SHRIMP! Yum. You will not be disappointed. They serve all day too, not many other places that do downtown.

Pros: Location, very cool old school bartenders and retro style

Cons: steer clear of the cheese potato

Maybe it's not fair for me to review this this restaurant since I didn't actually eat there. I did go with the intention of having a nice dinner, but this place smells. It smells bad. I could smell bad fish before I even walked inside. However, I thought I would be brave. We sat down and ordered drinks but I absolutely could not take the awful odor so we left.m What a dissapointment. I haven't been able to think about oysters since that experience.

I feel a responsibility after reading the very polarized reviews here to share my experience from this past weekend. We had a crab/artichoke appetizer which was pretty good. The lobster tail was pretty much tasteless... unless you consider "freezerish" a taste. My steak (I ordered surf & turf) looked like it had just been cut out of a vacuum-packed Omaha steak package... perfectly round. It didn't "look" like a petite filet... more like a sirloin. Didn't taste like a filet, either. The cheese potato that others have raved about... also tasted frozen and very pre-fab. It was in one of those little aluminum tins - basically mashed potatoes w/ cheddar on top. I will say that the service and atmosphere were great. (ALTHOUGH, my other friend who was with us said her Tuna (a special that night) was awesome... and she's from Florida, so I trust her fish opinion.)

This is out favorite restaurant in Raleigh for a wide variety of reasons. The seafood is always good, the selection is great, the staff seem to enjoy working here and the atmosphere is fun. This isn't the place for a quiet sit down dinner, but if you're going out with a group of people for a fun evening it is a great place to start.

I usually get a platter with fish, fried oysters and scallops; opt for the cheese potato, it's killer. My folks usually get something broiled and have never been disappointed. My wife loves the Cajun steamed shrimp and my 7yo lives for the scallops. I can't comment on dessert since we never have room after eating here.

It can be crowded on weekends, get their early! You can call ahead for seating so you won't have to wait so long.

After 20 years in the USMC, I spent time on the seaboards of many countries where I sampled the seafood. I live on the coast of NC and I go to 42nd St. for seafood. I've never had a bad experience there and the food and service seem better with each visit. I've befriended Brad Hurley and Hunter Correll. They remember me and dote on me while I'm there. Both have personally taken my order and served me and they're management! They'll do the same for you! The waitstaff is pleasant and attentive. Two tips. If you like steamed oysters, get Ashley to shuck them. She's efficient and beautiful. Second, leave the fries off of the seafood platters; they tend to add more shrimp, scallops and oysters. Folks, there's more to this place than seafood. It's as good as it gets.

Why do people say the food is great at 42nd. Atmosphere is a casual bar and grill, which was good, but the food was not. The baked oyster appetizer had slightly pasty, slightly burnt breading. Calamari appetizer was just oily with no flavor, and was also burnt. It was more like the deep fryer oil was black and needed a change. Each of the sides of rice was hard and not even fully cooked. One person's entire dish was rice with creole shrimp so was basically inedible. Another person's scallops were flavorless, accompanied with a dry, hard, flavorless halibut. The lobster tail I ordered was small, rubbery and also flavorless. I don't think I've ever felt so cheated before. At $26 for the rubber lobster dish, $8 for six burnt, pasty oysters and over $20 each for the other entrees, this is by far the worst value I've ever encountered.

I met a friend here for lunch yesterday and found myself wondering what it is that lets me forget my last bad experience at 42nd Street. Their salads are just plain sad and the crabcake was bready, overcooked and greasy. This place may be a great oyster bar but for good seafood there are better places in the area. If you aren't going out for oysters, keep looking.

At the first sight of the salad I remembered my disappointment from the previous time I dined at the 42nd St. Oyster Bar and Seafood Grill. It may be a good oyster bar but a Seafood Grill it is not. The salad was typical iceberg lettuce with a few chunks of cucumber and cold old cherry tomatoes. The side of vegetables was over cooked and must have been left over from the previous day. The crab cakes were over done and the olny thing that could have made them worse was more grease. One person in our party of 4 had the 1 1/2 lb. lobster @ 25.95 and received 25 dollars worth of rubber. Such a disappointment again! I can't figure out why so many people eat there.

Pros: Historical Landmark, Nice waitstaff

Cons: Terrible food, Low Quality for value

I think everyone should eat at 42end Street at least once to catch a glimpse of old Raleigh's true ambience. It is , in my opinion a historical landmark.
I have found if you have a reservation you will not wait, give the hostess your name and you are seated. If you do not , be prepared to wait. The food is mediocre, the atmosphere is loud and impersonal. The wait staff is attentive, as much as they can be with their handsful. The only thing going for it is the fact that it is a Raleigh landmark, and a very popular nightspot, of course with all the newer resturants in town their popularity is beyond me.

This classic restaurant located downtown has a great upbeat atmosphere and the seafood is the best around! The oysters at the oyster bar are a favorite with the family. We love the seafood bisque and buffalo shrimp for appetizers. The wait can be long sometimes but if you like oysters this is a must try.
