In Short
From the outside, this quiet outer Valencia spot might not call much attention, nevertheless, it's almost always full of Mission locals. Creatively presented "money bags"--deep-fried rice-paper bundles of prawn and chicken--are popular starters. The green papaya salad is served with prawns in a rice-paper bowl, and pad thai fans enjoy the mountainous seafood version.

Key Points

  • Best Thai food in San Fran.
  • Open daily for Lunch & Dinner.
  • Take-out & Catering available.

The Inside Scoop

  1. The Extras - The chef teaches Thai cooking classes on-site--they're inexpensive, educational and you get lots of good eats. Call for more information.
  2. Know Before You Go - Look for special ice cream flavors that might include ginger, coconut, lychee or mango.
  3. Where to Sit - Book the more festive private back room for your big party.

Best Thai Cuisine in the City

by Ambidextrous

Amazing food. Super flavorful. Try their Money Bags as an entree, delicious soups, the fresh salmon served on a palm leaf or the generous portion of pumpkin curry for entrees. Don't leave without having the sticky rice with mango for dessert!

Pros: Delicious food, good prices

Suriya has moved!

by HerbM

A true delight to discover that Suriya Thai has now reopened at 1532 Howard, between 11th and 12th ... and that he's not only open for dinner but lunch too (Mon-Sa).

The food was great, as always. Had a delightful soup of leg of pork with daikon ... and the green curry.

And ... parking appears to be more manageable, in contrast to the old location.

Pros: Outstanding green curry

Cons: None that i can think of

Suriya Has Moved to 1532 Howard Street--between 11th &12th

by iQuack

Suriya's Restaurant on Valencia Street has closed, but Suriya has opened a new restaurant on Howard Street between 11th & 12th Streets.

Some friends and I have been fans of Suriya's food for years and tried the new restaurant tonight--it's been open for only a day or two.

Everything we were served was excellent. It's hard to pick favorites here because the food is so good, but be sure to try #6 on the menu. It's a soup that's replete with delicious and well-balanced ingredients; fresh tasting with robust flavors.

All the other dishes were as good as Thai food gets, and that's very good, indeed!

Note that Suriya is now open for lunch. That makes good sense in Suriya's new neighborhood which is largely industrial with many people working in the area.

It's easy to give Suriya's new restaurant a 5 star review. I was saddened when Suriya's on Valencia Street closed, but Suriya is back and his culinary delights are as good as ever.

Pros: Best Thai food in town

Cons: None

Suriya: Exqusite Thai Food

by RobertWhyte

The new SURIYA THAI RESTAURANT,
1532 Howard Street beetween 11th and 12th Streets; Open for lunch Mon-Sat. 11:00 --2:30; Dinner 5:00 to 10:00 every evening.

Surprised to find that Suriya had established a new venue across the street from where my car was being serviced on Howard street, I entered to find out if the food was as wonderful as at the old place. I found it to be even better.
Many friends and regular customers were hoping he would open a new restaurant. He has! So come on back all ye ole faithful.
There's a good selection of vegetarian, chicken, prawns and tofu entrees as before. Still served are the Pumpkin Curry, Pad See-Ew stir fried rice and the Khao Soi chiang mai noodle entrees that I'm fond of. I tried something I always wanted to do at the old restaurant and that was to make a meal consisting only of appetizers that included Malagaw Tod (green papaya wedges with shredded coconut) and the Stuffed Basil Eggplant. All the appetizers are good
You'll find there a friendly staff as well as Soriya himself to greet you andmake your dinner enjoyable.

Best Thai Food in San Francisco

by c6

My wife and I have been coming to this restaurant for several years. We've tried all the others that are supposedly the best but none have compared to Suriya Thai Restaurant. All of the friends that we have take have said the same thing. I think he's still flying under the radar! Suriya is a real chef. Some of his creations are really unique. They're artful, healthy, and very tastey! I highly recommed this place!

Pros: Food, Service, Creativity, Friendliness

Cons: Cash

Bad pork

by alice62

I have eaten there for years and just went on a Sunday night, ate their pork tenderloin in mushroom sauce, a special, it was extremely salty and I got major stomach cramping and nausea all night long.
I think the meat must have been old.
I will not go back unless I ate only veggies there.

The latest Violations score

by n_1876

Um, what's the phone number for the local health inspector? Because this place is surely violating at least a handful health laws, if not the basic, food-service business law of not being dirty.
My friend, ever the calm and cool person she is, just said, as she wiped the rims of the drink glasses down with her napkin.
Utensils you have to wash out a minimum of 2x in hot water before you can eat with them. The floor filled with so much spilled, smell funny.
Mediocre food..... Yack atmosphere

Best Thai and Seafood anywhere!! Clean, Good Service, Outstanding Food!!

by rewsf

My friends and I stopped in and had the most amazing meal ever!! I have just eaten at some great
steakhouses and top rated restaurants and Suriya out did them by service and excellent food easilty!
We had the fish of the night - fresh, grilled, flaky - not fishy at all, steak - tender and juicy and full of flavor,
and 2 dishes with prawns. these are prawns - nice succulent tasty prawns with lots of flavor. The chef walks around and talks to everyone - with a great smile and attitude. I love this place and have been there several times, yet it's hard to get people to understand that this isn't cheap thai - this is a gourmet experience every time I go there. Always exquisite, well served, and fully satisified.

Pros: Seafood, Steak, Prawns, parking isn't too bad

Cons: no cons

Great Thai Food

by dpavli

This is one of my regular places. The food and service are always excellent. There are many Thai restaurants, but this is one of the best in San Francisco. Try the Chang Mai Noodles, you won't find this dish in other Thai places. The appetizers are yummy and beautifully presented. Curries are delectable and the Coconut soup is so rich and flavorful. Desserts like mango sticky rice and fried bananas with coconut ice cream are good too. I'm a vegetarian and there are plenty of options for me to enjoy.

food fine,cleanliness lacking

by mercilesssk

The food was fine, the place was fine...and then a multilegged, oval creature which will probably survive a nuclear war but cannot be named on this site walked onto the table. Makes me wonder how clean the place is. Thep Phenom is still my place for Thai.

Pros: food

Cons: cleanliness

I've tasted much better ...

by kzavarin

Ate at Suriya for the first time a few months ago, and it will probably be my last. Neighborhood bordering on seedy, and parking was awful. Service was impeccable, and they even gave us a free appetizer for the long wait; unfortunately, the food was average, and one of the dishes (Evil Jungle Prince) was plain awful -- whatever exotic spices they used made the dish taste like you were licking an ashtray. The place has a good reputation; however, I've eaten at many Thai restaurants in the Bay Area, and I know there are much better ones.

Pros: Courteous service

Cons: Difficult parking, below average food, cash only

Suriya Thai Restaurant--it's the best!

by dickschulist

I've been to Suriya's restaurant many times and it's always excellent. Suriya is a delightful person and his staff gives great service, too. I've always enjoyed the entire dining experience there.

Just returned from Suriya's after having a great dinner there. There were 6 of us at our table and we were all well satisfied. The selections we ate were all quite different from one another--many tase sensations that pleased all of us.

The food at Suriya's is many levels above most restaurants. We're lucky to have superb Asian restaurants here in San Francisco and Suriya's Thai restaurant ranks among the best in my opinion.

After living in San Francisco for 34 years, I know what restaurants are the really good ones that can be enjoyed repeatedly, and Suriya's is one of them.

Enjoy!

Pros: Best Thai food in San Francisco

Cons: None--OK, parking can be a problem, but you'll find a place if you're patient.

Perfect...

by wawa7

We had a large group eating a late dinner. We were promptly seated and very professionally taken care of. I am thorougly impressed with the management at Suriya. The manager personally came to greet us and make sure everything was well. As you know Thai food is spicy, and we were glad to have our glasses filled with water constantly. Thank you so very much for the perfect way you ended our evening.

Pros: Service, Food, Management

Cons: N/A

Suriya Is The Best!

by richardxx

I've been to Suriya's many times and it gets better with each visit. Suriya is a delightful person and his staff is very cordial and efficient.

Tonight's dinner was superb--many different taste sensations and all items were delicious as well as different from routine Thai food which in San Francisco is quite good at many places, but Suriya's is better.

If you want a Thai dinner that is REALLY superb, Suriya is the place to go. I've lived in San Francisco for 33 years and know what's good here.

Pros: Excellent Food, Great service, low prices

Cons: Cash only, No credit cards

Our last visit...

by canyonlands72

I've been to Suriya Thai about 4-5 times. Until last night, all of my visits were okay, but less than memorable. Last night, the food was BELOW average (except the sticky rice w/mango). We ordered Tom Kha Gai soup and a dish with sauteed eggplant, prawns, black beans, and basil.

The soup was too thick, lacked any kick in the spice department, and should have had other vegetables in addition to a load of boring sliced white mushrooms. It also had a distinct peanut taste (!?).

In the other dish, the prawns were tough and nearly flavorless, the beans were undercooked and hard inside, and there was so much basil the dishs overwhelming flavor was soapy no spice, sweetness, sourness, or saltiness (Thai foods primary flavors).

I've also had the pumpkin curry (which I never saw in 7 weeks in Thailand) and never ordered it again; other dishes are better.

Pros: ambiance, clean, friendly

Cons: cash only, parking, the FOOD!

Best Curries in the entire Bay

by thoutah

Suriya has by far the best curries, especially the green curry, which is smooth, thick, rich, and overflowing with flavor. I highly recommend their special "the Green Duet", consisting of an assortment of seafood, hunks of pumpkin, and green curry. The pumpkin in red curry is quite good too. I would also recommend the Sea Bass 2000, which is amazingly juicy and tangy, and the fish always tastes fresh. Some items can be hit and miss, for example the chicken with eggplant is pretty run-of-the-mill, while the "Jungle Prince", a dish with tofu and spinach, is a pretty unimaginative concoction. If you stick to the curries, you won't be disapointed.

Not your run of the mill Thai

by noevalleydiner

Suirya is a really great find. The food is delicious and not the same old dishes you find at most Thai restaurants. We had a special dish of steak served with a tasty sauce and a side of pumpkin and sauteed pea shoots. Yuum. The prices are reasonable and the service is friendly. I'm definitely going back for more.

Pros: Delicious Food, Not your usual dishes, Reasonable Prices

Cons: Difficult Parking

best in town

by vwcanter

This is the best Thai place I've been to, and I've been to a lot. Truly. A lot of Thai restaurants are good, but unoriginal. This place has some dishes I haven't seen anywhere else.

Pros: pumpkin curry, emerald noodles

Cons: not open some nights

suriya's money in the bag

by cedichou

They have this money bag appetizer which is quite good, little wraps tempura'd and you dip in a sauce, really good. We had a weekly special, and we ended up with way too much food: sea food soup with lots and lots of lemongrass and plenty of fish and shell fish, and tons of flavour. Even the dessert, which I don't fancy too much in most thai restaurant, we ordered because it looked good at the next table. Some kind of fried banana, with ice cream, mm, I still remember and it was a couple months back.

Pros: food

Cons: far out there, parking, cash only
