Macondo is a fair-trade Colombian coffee and (gluten-free) empanada shop founded with the intention of educating the city of Chicago about Colombian culture. At Macondo our mission is to act as a point of reference where Chicagoans can experience and enjoy Colombian culture through food, music, and of course, the richest coffee in the world. We are proud to be the first in Chicago to serve Juan Valdez CafeReale as well as an organic private label house blend. Our empanadas are gluten-free, made with a corn flour shell and fried in sweet and savory variations. Macondo Music offers a selection of traditional and contemporary Colombian, Afro-Latin, and World Music. Please visit our Sponsored Events section of our website for information on cultural and philanthropic events at Macondo and around Chicago.

When your Taste of Chicago stand sells 100,000 empanadas in two years, you start to think maybe you should open a restaurant devoted to those piping-hot pockets of joy. That's precisely the idea that occurred to the now-owners of this relaxed, mocha-walled Colombian coffee and empanada shop in Lakeview. Seven varieties of empanadas (from spicy chipotle mozzarella and seasoned ground beef to sweet tooth-sating dulce de leche with banana) fly out of the kitchen, along with other typical Colombian dishes such as cheese-oozing arepas with house-made chorizo. A custom, fair trade coffee blend--courtesy of Metropolis--is the beverage of choice for a diverse clientele, who pull up seats at the rustic-looking dark wood tables.

Key Points

  • Fair-trade coffee
  • Gluten-free empanadas
  • Celebrating Colombian culture

The Inside Scoop

  1. Know Before You Go - The empanadas come two to an order for $2.50, and as the price suggests, they're pretty small. If you're making a meal out of them, order a couple of varieties or add a house salad or a side of beans or rice.
  2. The Extras - In addition to the signature blend, you can also purchase fair trade coffees from eight Colombian micro-regions, as well as fair trade products like woven straw hats and bags in the restaurant's small retail area.
  3. Save Money - If you get addicted to Macondo's signature coffee blend, never fear: You can buy it by the bag and make it at home every morning.

Starbucks doesnt have empanadas.

by chidiner99

All of my friends I've brought to Las Tablas agree that the empanadas here are the best in Chicago, and now that Macondo is open we can get them to go anytime.

The sweet ones go great with the excellent quality coffee.

Pros: best empanadas in chicago

Cons: Not 24/7
