We've lived in the hood close to 20 years, seen lots of restaurants come and go. This one came and went and came again. Its brief incarnation as Cafe Societe was dreadful and unsuccessful, so Steak Frites is back. It is not much better. If you stick with the "steak frite" (rib eye version) you'll be fine, though it it a very thin steak, it is flavorful and good - its hard to mess up a ribeye.
But if you want a cocktail, please come with low expectations. Over a few visits, all I can say is sad. You can order the same drink 3 times, and get three very different drinks. One night, we ordered two very different "house special" cocktails, they looked exactly the same (like pineapple juice) and tasted very odd. My husband braved another of the same, but his second tasted nothing like the first - but the 2nd time it did taste exactly like pineapple juice as well as look like it! I'm not even sure the bartenders here every went to bartending school, much less ever bartended professionally.

The organic chicken is bone dry and small. The salmon is dry. The frisee salad w/ lardons had about 3 chewy "lardons" in it. But the onion rings are good (though greasy, but that's what probably makes them good). Stick with the ribeye.

Looking around at the other diners, we get the impression they are not mixologists nor foodies. I guess this place fulfills a niche. We want to like it, and we want to support neightborhood places. But Steak Frites is very pedestrian on its best day. Its no Balthezar (though that is an overrated bistro also).

Cons: bad drinks/ iffy food

The prix-fixe brunch was great and what they had was delicious. The best part about having a table of 18 with a limited menu is that you have at least one of every dish in your party. I tried the brioche french toast, which was delicious, but a bit too soggy in the center. I assumed that the benedict would be the most popular dish at the table, but steak and eggs seemed to take the lead.

Their b?arnaise sauce was delicious and had a perfect amount of tarragon in it. . We ordered a side of bacon, which was perfectly crispy! They constantly refilled our glasses, and allowed us to stay a little over the 2 hour limit. I didn't come here expecting it to be earth shattering brunch, but left more impressed than I ever thought I would be.

Okay, i agree with the other users that i should've checked the reviews before going to the place but gees, who would've thought that it would be THAT bad. We were a party of 5, there for brunch on a Saturday, and was seated promptly upon arrival - the place was fairly empty, but maybe it was 'cause it was already past lunch time. Things were fine and dandy up until the point that some of us were brought the wrong dish or missing something on their dish. They brought out the wrong omlette dish and one of our plates were missing scrambled eggs. We brought it to the waiters attention immediately and we assumed that they were taking care of it in the kitchen. 20 minutes pass and NO EGGS! For goodness sakes, how long does it take to cook up an omelette and some scrambled eggs?? I was so disappointed at the service and of course, for whatever reason the waiter disappears everytime i'm looking for him. The manager comes over after the omelette and scrambled eggs for the other plate was served (meanwhile half of us are done with our food) and apologizes for the trouble and will take the steak off the bill. Now after all this trouble, i assumed that she meant that she will take one of the brunch plates off the bill (which is like a $16 value). The check comes and of course i'm double checking everything given that the service was so poor, who knows what else they can mess up on - and it didn't look like ANYTHING was taken off. I ask the waiter and he said that the manager adjusted the check to take $3 off. Wow, whoopy doo - i didn't argue with the waiter, and i just took the bill as is. Needless to say, i didn't tip him well - heck with that kind of service i shouldn't have tipped at ALL!

Oh and if anyone is wondering about the food - its nothing to rave about, as a matter of fact my steak was rather tough and the french fries were soggy! So much for the restaurant name huh? Can't even cook that correctly.

Just avoid the restaurant altogether.

I should have read the reviews before I went- so I guess it is my own fault. I have never in my entire life had such terrible serivce. I worked in food service for years, dine out very often and consider myself very patient and forgiving.
The food sounded and looked delicious - I just wish that my party was served any food or drinks to try. Even after asking multiple times for someone to take our order we were still left waiting. We noticed a number of other tables in the same situation we were. Ultimately I am glad - we wound up leaving and having a fantastic meal up the street.

This place i would not even given a second thought to going, when there are so many better restaurants in the city. We were a party of 4 that had reservations, get there and sit down right away -- however no one comes over to us for 35 minutes, in which we had to ask both the bartender and the hostess for a waiter. Finally one shows up all scatterbrained and anxious and takes our drink orders, in which 10 minutes later he comes back and asks for clarification, after another 10 minutes of not coming back with drinks and just getting water, we get up and leave. the worst experience of my years of city dining. i've never walked out of somewhere ever. we ended up walking a few blocks to angelo maxies and having a nice dinner.

steak frites i will never go again. its not worth spending money to have terrible service and be ignored.

the food is certainly ok, nothing spectacular but my mussels and frites were quite yummy, the bread was great, the wine was great, cute ambiance... and service was nothing to write home about, but also not bad at all... all in all, an average to good place for yummy fries and a lively atmosphere.

I fully expected to have a bad experience here, but we were actually very surprised. We were in the neighborhood, it was cold and I was hungry. I also really had the craving for a steak or hamburger and this is what the restaurant is known for. So we went for it - it was a Sunday afternoon and brunch was being served. We were seated close to the door, which was a little annoying because you could feel the cold wind every time the door opened. We sat for a few minutes with no one coming over at all and I didn't even see a waiter. I expected the worst, but after a little bit, our waiter showed up and he was absolutely charming and attentive. He took our drink and food orders, and again - I expected not to see him for some time. But within 5 mins, he returned with our Bloody Mary's (which were very good by the way!) and then another 5 mins and our food came. I had the "steak frites" and my husband had the very delicious, juicy Black Angus Burger. The food was tasty and satisfying. We had no complaints. $16 is NOT a lot of money for brunch in NYC people, get with it. You are NOT getting 2 or 3 courses for $16 in Manhattan. My only complaint was the fries. They were hot but too thick, not crispy enough and not fried to a uniform color, some were very dark, others were lighter. For a French brasserie restaurant specializing in "frites", the frites need to be really memorable.

This place is NOT Michelin rated, so you need to keep that in mind. We had a perfectly pleasant experience here.

I had never been to Steak Frites, and frankly, didn't expect much. My major complaints are not about the food, but about the service and layout of the dining room. We were seated at a two-top in the back, where all of the tables are jammed together, and not in a charming European way. There were literally 2 inches between our table and the next, and the people in the corner table needed to ask other diners to get up when they needed to get out of their booth. It was really bizarre, and could be remedied by just removing one or 2 small tables! It would have made the whole experience so much better. The food wasn't terrible, but our waiter was pretty inattentive. We waited nearly 5 minutes for steak knives after our steak had arrived at the table, and I never was asked if I wanted another glass of wine, even though I had finished the first glass with our first course. All in all, I suppose it's a decent neighborhood joint, but some attention should be paid to the dining experience - I'm not talking about 4 star service, but I don't want to be jammed in like sardines, either!

I hate to slam a restaurant but this has got to be one of the worst dining experience I have had in a very long time. Do not go there. I went there during restaurant week and yeah, I know, they dont put their best foot forward but really, shouldnt they? The steak was unrecognizable, the pepper sauce was way too peppery, the fries were dry, and the oyster appetizers were....lets see, there are no nice words to desrcibe it so I will just leave it at that!

The food is decent, in fact I love the French Onion soup, but I always leave feeling a little irritated and wondering why I picked this place again. On my last visit, a friend and I ordered soup, salad and fries. . . pretty simple. After finishing our soup, we sat with empty bowls and empty drinks trying to flag down our waiter who almost seemed to be purposely avoiding our efforts. We eventually got his attention and asked him to cancel the rest of the order and just bring the check. His response was rude and entirely unapologetic. He brought over a woman who I assume was a manager. She informed us that it would be fine to cancel our order "this time" because the food still had not been prepared. Really? A salad and french fries? She was equally unapologetic and asked if we wanted to cancel our order because we had to wait, as if it was not good enough a reason. Where I normally just feel ignored, this time I felt offended. I don't think that I will go back.

We walked out after the water arrived, so we can't speak about the food. We stopped in for the prix fixe brunch after taking a look at the menu outside, but we were told after being seated that the $16 prix fix was for ONE (1) course. With Prix fixe menus, you usually get 2 or 3 courses and the menu they posted outside made it seem like this was the case. To be fair, maybe prix fixe menus only consist of one course when it's brunch and not dinner, and we were just unaware of this custom, but one of the dishes on this menu was yogurt and granola. $16 for yogurt and granola??? I was really turned off by this.

We dined here during restaurant week and were not impressed, even though Susan Sarandon was sitting at the next table. Servings were miniscule and so so. Meat was dry and stringy. Mussels were pretty good but there were just too many of them without something else to go along. They would have been great with a side of pasta or a vegetable. The place looks dirty too

I have to say that last night was the first and last time I would step into this restaurant. The waiter had to have been the only thing that made me stay and finish my meal. (only cause I didn't want to stiff him on the bill) The food was mediocre, the service was lacking, but the music was the most horrible. The restaurant was quiet, and they were blasting cheesy radio club music from 1999..... Enough said....

Being accomodated so graciously on a Saturday night in NYC is the exception not the rule.
My party waited no more than 10 minutes for a table and the service and food were great. The lovely manager suggested a great wine and she even returned to the table to see if all was well.
A very satisfying experience.

The service was dismal. No, not dismal, non-existent. Bread and water came. After 45 minutes of waiting. Still no food. This, in a pratically empty restaurant. Spoke to the manager who just smirked when I complained and continued chatting with her friend at the bar. The owner should first fire her then get a new serving staff. I cannot comment on the quality of the food as I didn't get to taste any. But there seem to be plenty of disgruntled reviewers on here who address the quality of the food.

I know it's not everything, but for me - a meal is an excuse to eat dessert. I really enjoyed the dishes I got. The ingredients were fresh, not exactly original, but that was fine.
But the dessert was REALLY dissappointing. For a 4 Star French restaurant, I would think the dessert would be up to par, but it was dry and unoriginal. Really dissapointing.

While I did enjoy the food, I noticed that everyone around me was stipping at their tables. No, the vast wine list had nothing to do with it. Outside, it wasn't hot or cold, but inside the restaurant, it was a good 90 degrees. I hear that during the summer months, it becomes even more unbearable. Therefore, I wouldn't recommend eating here until the management actually spends some money on air conditioning!

With no pretensions of being haute cuisine, the Steak Frites haters doth protest too much, methinks. We were seated immediately by a cheery hostess, and ordered from an affable if soft-spoken waitress. For our wine they tried to give us little water glasses instead of the Bordeaux mammoths clearly displayed at the bar, but didn't grumble when called on it. When the food came, our runner couldn't keep straight who was to get what (also easily remedied). My lobster tail was un peu stringy but tasted great. On my filet mignon was a thin glaze of BBQ sauce--a little pedestrian for such a posh cut. Mind that if you order beef, they err on the side of high cooking, i.e. "Medium-well" means almost no pink. Overall, I liked the place and will come back--provided they stop playing music by The Roots. Mon dieu, get some Edith Piaf!

Some co-workers and I came here for Restaurant Week lunch. Our waiter, while friendly, seemed confused several times, though he did apologize. Each course - appetizer, entree, and dessert - were all mixed up. Appetizer they brought 2 dishes that weren't even on the prix fixe menu, entree they got the number of entrees right, but gave everyone who ordered the steak, the wrong degree cooked (we were able to switch around), and dessert came out as 4 chocolate mousses and 1 creme caramel instead of the other way around.
The food itself was good overall, but inconsistent - absolutely delicious warm mushroom vichysoisse! Steaks were good, frites just OK. Creme caramel would have been better if not for a layer of...I don't know the word, but you know how jello sometimes gets that thin layer of..well i know it when i see it!

Pros: Ambience

Cons: Confused Service

I had eaten at this restaurant a few times for lunch and it was fine, but we dropped in on a Friday evening in December and had a terrible meal. My boyfriend got the signature dish, steak frites, and at least 50% of the steak was inedible. We pointed this out to the waiter and then to the manager and they offered us a free desert. At that point, we just wanted to get out of the place. Sure, it was crowded and busy, it was a Friday night in Union Square in December - it should be busy!!! - but the service was totally flustered and remiss. I will not go back, there are plenty of other places in the area that are far superior.

If steak frites wasn't located near union square nobody would ever go there. The service was the worst i've ever seen. The waiter took forever to bring anything we asked for and many of the patrons got the wrong order. The food was subpar and the place is way overpriced for the dining experience. Upon leaving, even the hostess admitted to us that she was not suprised by our comments and that the place is extremely poorly run.

I ate here with a friend for lunch and noticed that the menu at the restaurant was different from the one shown online. I had my heart set on eating a particular dish and had asked the waiter if there was another menu that had it. Before I was done asking he rudely interrupted me by saying "No!" Then I wanted to ask him for the specials of the day or anything he would recommend but he walked away in a hurry. It wasn't even busy! Also, I found the service to be very slow and getting the check took even longer. I was also very disappointed in the portion of my meal and the price I paid for it (Thursday special). Overall, I would NOT recommend this place.

After reading all negative reviews I was concerned about taking my family and friends here but we decided to try and were glad we did. We went early, about 5:30 prior to going to a show. There where 7 of us, including 3 teenagers. The staff was very friendly, we were steated immediately (there weren't too many people there at this time), our waiter was excellent answering my wife's friends many many questions with patience, the food was very good. I can not account for all the negative experience but we were all very pleased to have gone.

When I politely told the waitress that my steak was way overcooked (I ordered medium rare, on the rare side, and it came out with barely a hint of pink), she seemed to take it really personally. When the new steak came back out, it wasn't even worth the wait of having it re-done. I can make better steak at home, and I'm no chef! Not to mention that the bernaise sauce that was supposed to come with it did not. By the time I got that, also with attitude, my not so great steak was cold. I can't say that any part of the meal was impressive from the fries to the vegitable side (mushrooms) to the bernaise. Steak Frites? More like Charred Meat.

I read all your (negative) reviews; maybe lunch is a better time to go? We were there at 12:30; reserved seating was immediate, waiters were perfectly polite and attentive. My Moules Frites en Homard was delicious and my co-worker's Steak Sandwich was also good. The salad with pumpkin seeds and mushroom soup with truffle oil were delicious, too. If you're game to try this place again, do at lunchtime because maybe, as per the other reviews, the cooks and staff become cranky and uncooperative by 6:00.

My husband and I waited an hour for two omelettes. Our waiter was confused and forgot an additional soda when we asked for it. It was not even busy in the restaurant and it seemed like all the waiters were running around for no reason. We will never again spend $45 on two omelettes and frustration for what was supposed to be a simple brunch.

reading the prior reviews and having my own laque luster expieriences before, I entered Steak Frites this weekend a little gun shy. The hostess, a latino girl, still abressive, the A.C. still not working, and our seeting in the sweltering back of the house. Our server assured us that it would be worth it to stay, still a little iffy we did anyway, and I'll be damned if he was'nt right. We asked for his suggestions on specials, wines and desserts, and were absolutly delighted with all, I had a bone in rib-eye with red peppers and corn that was recomended and deliciouse, as well as the appetizer, wine and dessert suggestions. I will definatly return and always ask for Blake.

Save your money eat elsewhere. The hostess was rude and convinced us to come at 930 so we would get better service. The room was hot and there seemed to be no air conditioning. When my wife asked about it in a very polite manner the Hostess said, what are you talking about it is here-we have air conditioning. Imagine. We waited 25 minutes to get water and bread delivered to the table. The waiter was singing while taking our order- the food arrived 30 minutes later and the food was good, but the mules Frites were cold, the steak had to be returned twice-the spinach looked like it was grass from Union Square park with hunks of garlic in it-totally Unacceptable. When we asked for the Manager after waiting 15 minutes he never arrived-so we left-I used to go there all the time-the place has fallen apart. Sad.

The first time I was there, the food & service was great... but last night, just horrible!! Let me point out, the food still good.. but the service was very very disappointed.. the waiter didn't recommen any special for the night, didn't come back to the table to check if everything is okay, didn't even offer me the dessert menu at the end. On top of all the bad service, it was like a steam room in the resturant, street temp. was cooler than inside the resturant.

I'm just waiting for this place to go belly up...To begin, they have one of the rudest hostesses I've ever encountered. I was meeting a friend who lives around the corner and she told me that I couldn't be seated because it's their policy to only seat entire parties "in case someone comes in and wants the table you want and your friend never shows up". Seriously, wow. There were, literally, 4 other people in the place, I think we can all find a place to sit. Bread's good, I can make better french onion soup at home and "lobster" risotto had salmon in it, which my friend is allergic to - all in all, a disaster that I wish had never happened.

It not only took us 25 minutes after our reser vation to be seated, but took another 20 minutes to get menus. Our first round of drinks took anouther 20 minutes with 2 out of 4 coming wrong. The waiter was actually quite accomidating helping us substitues some of our courses, but overall the waiters were unnatentive, unhelpfull, and docile. We were made to feel as if we were a burden by asking for additional ammenities such as an extra plate or balsamic vinegar. No wonder it was one of the only restaurants available for last minute reservations during restaurant week. NOT RECOMMENDED

GO: Bowls were dirty and when we asked for clean bowls (oh yeah utensils too) the waiter said we shouldn't make a big deal about it. My leftover steak was given to me in a foil but no bag. When we complained about the bad service the waiter said we should go somewhere else because he doesn't consider Steak Frittes, the restaurant that pays his bills, to be fine-dining so what should we expect. I complained to the manager who seemed stunned and embarassed but it's obvious nothing has been done about this since I'm reading negative reviews going back to January 2004. What a disappointment! On top of it all, I was with family from out of town and the only reason I took them there was because a friend had mentioned the place and Coffee Shop had a little wait. NEVER AGAIN!

Nice shiny day.... We were at Union Square and decided to call Steak Frites to make sure we have a table outdoor. Unfortunately no place any more at the terrace but we were told we could have the table just next to the open window. So reservation is made for 4 people, for 5 minutes later. Already enjoying the moment.
We arrived exactly 3 minutes later, so 2 minutes before our due time. Our table was ... not available anymore. Although the waitress had clearly our reservation on her book, she told us somebody arrived one minute ago and being first to arrive, he could have our table.
We refused another table, inside.
What is the point to call and have a table confirmed when this elementary commercial rule is not respected ???
We won't go and try the food. The service is just not acceptable.

So this spot is local for me and a great idea -- my very own Les Halles! But it ALWAYS dissapoints. Last night -- no utensils on the table when we sat down, we mentioned it, still none when our food arrived. Waiter not very pleasant, but that's not a deal-breaker. The mediocre food, however, is. First off, the "steaks frites" on the prix fixe doesn't come with frites. It comes with some crappy mayonaisse-y potato gratin thing that boarders on vile. The steak itself was okay. Two people at my table ordered duck confit. They got duck magret served to them. (Which they ate anyway cause they were hungry.) The deserts are sad. They come straight from the fridge, on a freezing cold plate. And they're not really cooked right -- which is a shame, cause they're such classic french desserts. I keep wishing this place were better.

Let's face it, French bistro cuisine really isn't anything special. If you do want it however, Steak Frites does a good job. They cook their meat well and the fries, as expected, are good. They also have a nice wine list. I recommend the Maison L'Aiglon St. Chinian.

What an unfortunate experience. I've been to Steak Frites a couple of times a year for the past six years, & it's generally been a consistently great experience. Until this last visit - the service was horrible (no napkins on the table; no bread was brought out; the waiter ignored us; no refills of water); the meat was fatty; the bernaise was congealed; the wine we ordered was out of stock (but no one bothered to tell us until we asked); the frites were cold; and special dietary requests were ignored. I can confidently say that I will never go back.

My table ordered two items (Salmon and Steak Frites) the salmon was returned to the kitchen due to its poor taste and smell. The steak was below par, ordered medium--was delievered burned on the outside, although still pink in the middle. The wine list is basically moot, given the fact that 80% of the bottles are out of stock. An unfortunate incident is my summation of the evening at Steak Frites.

My friends and I went there last night for dinner and we had a great night. The service was great - prompt seating and the friendliest waitress i ever had. The food was great as well. The hanger steak was phenomenal. I ordered the lamb shank and it was just as great. The wine prices were very extremely affordable and a great selection. Honestly, it was a great night with great food and even greater service - i can't even begin to imagine what some of the reviewers are talking about. We will definitely go back again!!!!

I don't know why I chose to ignore the negative reviews of this place. Unfortunately, they were right on target! The "Steak Frites" was tough/chewy and the service very disappointing (especially considering that the restaurant was empty - I guess some people are taking the reviews to heart!) I was entertaining some out-of-town business associates and frankly I was embarrassed to have taken them here. Please, don't make the same mistake I did!

I went to Steak Frites during Restaurant Week this summer, and, after finishing our entrees, it took them 1.5 hours to bring out my dessert. Since we were in a rush, I asked if I could have it to go, and they still brought it out on a plate and told us the "presentation would not be the same" if they wrapped it up for us. Maybe the place was particularly busy because it was Restaurant Week but no restaurant should have such bad service, especially during a time it is trying to promote itself.

went to celebrate mom's b/day. if steaks are their primo offering, I would try elsewhere for better quality & taste. quite disappointed with their soft shell crab with risotto, duck was dry & tough, the hangar steak a poor choice, mashed potatoes no taste, frites dry & hard. the mixed greens with goat's cheese & the dessert were excellent tho - don't expect the ice cream soda as described but the chocolate dessert was fab. all in all not worth the time & time the server did not have. she was practically absent serving another larger party. waste not want not, don't bother - fleur de sel is much better.

We had a reservation at 8:30 and were not seated until five to nine, and were then seated at a table with a broken headrest. I asked to speak to the manager about this. When someone came by, I asked if he was the manager and he said to me, "Look at my waiter's uniform, do I look like the manager?". The rest of the dinner was even worse. The chicken we ordered couldn't be worse. The steak frites were burnt, greasy and soggy. We sent our entrees back and at the end of the night were charged for them. We had to argue for literally twenty minutes about why we aren't paying. This restaurant is horrendous and it was one of the worse dining experiences I have ever had. Do yourself a favor and go next door to Union Square Cafe. DO NOT GO HERE.

This is the worst restaurant I have ever eaten in. We were seated a half hour late and the chicken entree which we all ordered looked raw on the outside and had the worst taste ever. It was served with a sauce that looked like fatty jello-like garlic gravy. The chickens hanging in the window in China Town look more appealing.
The servers are fine, but they are bound by the philosophy of the most inhospitable restaurant group in Manhattan. When we all sent our chicken served with soggy french fries back, they still expected us to pay for it and fought us for 30 mins. No joke.
The experience at McDonalds is better--atleast that comes with a smile.

This bistro in Union Square serves all the classics. The signature entrecote de Paris, a dry-aged Angus rib-eye, is tender and juicy enough to satiate any hardcore carnivore. The pan-seared sea scallops, cushioned atop a mint-accented…
