.

I came down with a nasty case fo the flu a few weeks ago. I had a fever for 3 sleepless nights, painful coughing and a migraine headache that wouldn't go away. On the morning following the 3rd night I decided I needed to get some medical attention to determine if anit-biotics were in order.

I waited about a 1/2 hour in the waiting room followed by 1/2 in the examining room to see Dr Melina, which is better than the standard 3 or 4 weeks by appointment. All in all... not bad.

He took the time to talk with me, ask questions and listen to my answers. In the end his recommendation was pretty much... "You don't look too sick to me... Let's not do anything, Take some over the counter pain killer and antihistamine and maybe a decogestant. Come back in a week if you're not feeling better." This feedback was probably less than satisfying, but it was probably the right course of action overall. Testing for N1H1 would have felt more proactive, but the tests wouldn't have changed the treatment. Antibiotics probably would have felt more goal-oriented, but too many doctors prescribe unnecessary prescriptions just to satisfy their patients.

The one thing that did disappoint me was the fact that when I told him I the natural things I was taking to improve my health his remarks were a bit condescending. "Garlic!? That's only good for pizza!" "Zinc, that's useless for these symptoms." "Vitamen C & D? You're wasting your time." "Amino acids? What?" I think too many doctors get their entire education sponsored by the big pharmaceuticals these days and feel threatened by homeopathic and natural medicine. In this sense, he's just another MD drinking the cool-aid handed out by the AMA, Pfizer, and Merk.
