I've lived in the San Francisco Bay Area all of my life and have a 9 year old daughter. We've recently went on this half-day bus tour from San Francisco heading to Muir Woods and had a blast (it was the first time to Muir Woods for the both of us). Those who are not comfortable driving along windy and narrow roads should definitely take this tour instead of attempting to drive out to Muir Woods on your own. Plus, the minibus was really comfortable and you get to have an informative tour guide telling you about the history and significance of all of the highlights that we passed along the way. Once we got to Muir Woods, we got to spend about an hour in the forest - just about the right amount of time for the 9 year old. Then, the tour bus headed out to our next stop - Sausalito. The tour guide drove through the town, giving us interesting facts about the beautiful little city and let us off right at the heart of the town. I have been to Sausalito many times and knew that I wanted to spend more than the hour that the tour bus company was allotting for this stop so I told the tour guide that I was going to choose to stay behind and take an one-way ferry back to San Francisco instead of the complimentary bus transportation that they were offering with the tour. We walked over to eat lunch at my favorite deli (Sausalito Gourmet Deli) which is located about a 10 minute leisurely walk from the heart of town. This place is HIGHLY recommended. The bread used for the sandwiches are always fresh and both the deviled egg and baklava are to die for. After lunch, we walked back to the heart of town and went window shopping at many of the cute and unique stores along the waterfront. After taking fantastic pictures of the skyline of San Francisco, we had ice cream at Lappert's (also YUMMY) and took the ferry back to San Francisco. It was just a perfect mother and daughter day and highly recommended for other parents looking to do something fun and educational with their kids in SF.
