Christina Shusterich of NY Clever K9 is a miracle worker. Since moving to NYC, our dog Blue became very frightened and skittish on walks but worse she soon became very anxious when left alone, something that had never happened before. She would completely panic, circling us when we tried to leave and barking non stop when we were gone. This became a huge problem as several neighbors complained and we got a warning from the Board and were new to the building. We tried a trainer who put a citronella collar on her which she just barded through and told us to crate her - she injured he mouth (a vet trip) trying to chew through the crate. A coworker recommended Christina who immediately started working on both problem, making changes almost as soon as she walked in - no crate! It seems miraculous but over sessions and with practice we can now leave Blue alone and she is so much calmer on walks. Christina was also very compassionate, not just to Blue but us too as we were extremely stressed. We really can't thank her enough.

Christina saved our dog's life.
We rescued a 70 pound pit mix with massive behavior issues including biting, lunging randomly, pulling on walks and leash aggression. The leash aggression was so bad that we could spend 10 minutes trying to wrest the leash from his mouth, and would frequently get bitten in the process. Expecting a baby in months, we gave him only a few months to shape up or ship out.

Christina was not our first trainer / behaviorist. We started with Petco (nice people but not prepared for our dog), then a team who put him on the eCollar, and another behaviorist from Upstate. All had helped a little but he was still unpredictable and unmanageable.

I can't say that the results when we met Christina were instant (although she could instantly handle him!) But when he and I put into practice the completely manageable lessons that Christina taught us he has transformed from a dog who pulls and bites to a dog capable of walking with me, paying attention and not flipping out on every walk. Her calming techniques and insights into our dog's actions were remarkable and effective.

Now, one year and lots of practice later, we completely trust our dog around our newborn. If your dog seems hopeless, there is no Cesar Milan out there - that's TV magic. Christina is clearly the path to success and is worth her (somewhat expensive) fee

In September of 2014 we contacted Christina Shusterich of NY Clever K9
Inc. to help us with our now 14-month-old dog Ella that we adopted
from North Shore Animal League. After paying Christina almost
$1,500.00 (one evaluation at $299 and 7 one-hour sessions at $170 per
session) Christina told us our only option left was to euthanize Ella.
She told us that keeping Ella would be selfish because shes
suffering, giving her away would end up in her being abused and
ultimately killed, and giving her to a shelter would be worse than
killing her because no one would adopt her and she would either be
killed or condemned to a life in a shelter. Two days after Christina
told us to euthanize Ella we met with another trainer who evaluated
Ella. He told us that he has successfully rehabilitated cases much
more severe than Ella and euthanizing her is unconscionable. Since
meeting with the new trainer Ella has made amazing progress and is on
her way to being a well-behaved and balanced dog. When we contacted
Christina to request a refund not only did she deny us the refund, but
she went on to make a number of false statements about our conduct
throughout our time working with her, which even if they were all
true, would not begin to justify Christina telling us to euthanize
Ella.

During the course of our 7 sessions with Christina Shusterich of NY
Clever K9 Inc., she began pharmacological therapy for Ella with
Fluoxetine, the generic form of Prozac. She repeatedly, both verbally
and in e-mails, gave us instructions on what medications to use and
not use, dosage instructions, told us what to tell our veterinarian
about the use of medications, and even told us to change veterinarians
when our veterinarian would not follow Christinas dosage
instructions. After doing some research we found out that it is both
illegal and unethical for a trainer who does not have a veterinary
license to recommend medication. The furthest a trainer can go is to
say: Many of my clients have had success in improvements in their
dog's behavior with medications x, y, z that their vet has
prescribed.

Christina said how she is often peoples last hope before they either
give away or euthanize their dogs. She also told us on more than one
occasion how incredibly patient and dedicated we were with Ella to the
point where other people would have already given up on her. Before
you label anything as your last hope to save your dogs life, please
consider all your options. There are many honest, ethical, and
knowledgeable trainers, as well as different training methodology out
there, so dont give up hope if one does not work. Anyone can create a
website and claim to be an expert, so please do your research on
people before you hire anyone and put your dogs life in their hands.

Per The Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT),

Many persons employed in the dog training field use the title
"behaviorist" incorrectly. While there is no legal standard, it is
generally accepted in the industry that a behaviorist is someone who
has a doctorate level graduate degree. A Certified Applied Animal
Behaviorist is a behaviorist who is certified through the The Animal
Behavior Society.

Per The Animal Behavior Society (ABS),

The term "behaviorist" is not protected so many people abuse the term
and mislead the public. The term "Certified applied animal
behaviorist" is protected and can only be used by ABS Board Certified
Professionals.

There are only 2 Board Certified Behaviorists. ABS certifies PhD
Behaviorists and The American College of Veterinary Behaviorists
certifies DVM Behaviorists. All other applied animal professionals
should be using other terms such as dog trainer or counselor.

You can go to The Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT)
website to check if a trainer is a member. You can go to The Animal
Behavior Societys (ABS) website to see if someone is a Certified
applied animal behaviorist. You can go to the ACABC Member Directory
to check if someone is a CBC (Canine Behavior Counselor). However
please keep in mind a CBC is not a Certified applied animal
behaviorist.

Based on our experience, we do not recommend Christina Shusterich
of NY Clever K9 Inc.

After 51 years of marriage, 2 children, and 7 dogs, we adopted a 3 month old Leavitt Bulldog. Although loving and lovable, Larry soon showed very unpredictable behavior and difficulty interacting with other dogs. We kept him at home and avoided public places.

Several months later, Larry was a strong athletic dog but unpredictable, lunging at other dogs and working himself into a frenzy when outside, making walks frightening and leaving us all feeling overwhelmed.

Then we found Christina. After a simple and easy meeting with her followed by a hands on evaluation of Larry on the sidewalk, she quickly understood the behavioral problems and began educating and training us as well as Larry.

Under Christinas tutelage, Larrys transformation to a fun companion was rapid, straightforward, and reliable. Walking him very quickly became a pleasure instead of something to dread each day. We are still amazed and thrilled and very grateful to her for her expertise and her palpable love for her students. I would just like others to know how our lives have been changed by her expertise and caring. Another huge "thank you" to Christina!

Christina is just an amazing behaviorist, the session our rescue dog Cappy had was way beyond our expectations. Doing rescue work I have never seen anyone work so dramatically or quickly, she was able to not only keep Cappy from exhibiting any of the aggressive signs of fear of strangers that we began seeing in him but to engage him and bring out a playfulness we hadn't seen before (but suspected!) We have been seeing amazing changes in Cappy since she came -- he is much less fearful, more confident, engaged, more animated... happier! We think Christina is a terrific find

Christina is awsome! She helped me turn my anxious, hyperactive whippet mix into a calmer, more obedient dog. She uses positive reinforcement and is very knowledgeble. My dog, Godiva, and I recommend her wholeheartedly!

Christina is amazing and it is because of her that my husband and I were able to keep the 11-month old black lab mix that we adopted. Our dog was terrified to be on the leash in the city and was nearly impossible to control on leash. Even worse, although incredibly loving and friendly normally, he became aggressive to both dogs and people when leashed. We went through two other trainers before meeting Christina, and had nearly given up hope. But Christiana turned the entire picture around in only a few sessions. She taught him to walk next to us on the leash (something I never thought was possible with our dog) and worked with us to change his emotions while on leash. Now, he rarely ever barks at other dogs and never at people. She is a true expert in the field, smart, kind and utterly professional. I would recommend Christina to anyone who has a dog with behavioral issues.

We highly recommend Christina! From the very first meeting, she came into our home and pointed out things that were stressful to our beloved dog Fergus, and when we made those changes he became a completely different dog. He loved to see Christina every time she visited and was very receptive to her positive direction. Before Christina, We were afraid to walk Fergus because of his unpredictable aggression toward other dogs and some humans. Christina is very intuitive when it comes to aggression issues, and with her positive training techniques his behavior immediately changed. Without Christina's help we wouldn't be able to keep Fergus in the environment he was in much longer without something terrible happening. Today, we are now confidently taking Fergus for walks and handling him in the appropriate way. We are forever grateful to Christina for helping our family and for helping Fergus become the loving dog we always knew he could be. His aggression issues have virtually ceased to exist and today Fergus is a happy, well adjusted dog who ??plays well with others"

LOVE HER!
Arleen and I got Peanut, our puppy Beagle, back in Dec 2009. Neither of us had ever had a dog before but always wanted one. We thought training would be easy but soon learned we had our hands full with Peanut. Our 4 month old puppy had tons of energy and showed signs of food aggression. We called around and did some research for a dog trainer/behaviorist and came across Christina Shusterich. Everything we read was A+ so we called and set up an appointment. We were not disappointed. Peanut took to her immediately, and with her friendly demeanor, we did as well. Using her techniques, Peanut quickly learned various commands and now shows ZERO food aggression. I recommend Christina??s training for anyone who needs to train their dog.

It was very embarrassing for us to have our dog Bailey show aggression to other dogs, especially after moving to a very pet friendly apartment building. Needless to say, there are dogs everywhere. With Christina's help Bailey overcame his leash aggression in just a few sessions, he is unconcerned with other dogs, more relaxed and is behaving better every day. He even had a very friendly encounter with another dog yesterday, they were sniffing each other, wagging tails, it was great! He also actually listens to us outside! No more embarrassing days. Working with Christina was a wonderful experience as she made it simple and fun, we highly recommend her!"

Shortly after I got Heidi she became more and more frightened of strangers. She began to shake and hide whenever a visitor came to our house and would not come out until they left, even if it took hours. When I tried to walk her outside, she would be terrified and shake, pant and lunge back indoors so that I was unable to walk her. She would also jump and run at every new noise. Through Christina's behavior modification program the difference is remarkable. Christina transformed her from a terrified dog who was limited to our house to a happy and confident one who is now capable of enjoying walks, people and life! I highly recommend NY Clever K9!"

I am so glad Christina came into our lives! My dog had a big problem with other large dogs whenever we went on walks. He would pull, bark, stare and even cry if he could not get close to the other dog. Christina took the time to evaluate Pluto, by talking with me and by observing him carefully. She worked with him (and myself) gently, consistently and effectively. She helped me to understand my dog??s anxiety, its origins and how to treat it. She encouraged me to keep practicing with Pluto, and to not be discouraged by minor lapses. The result: a calmer, happier dog, who is complimented on his beautiful walk and nonchalant attitude toward other excitable dogs. I love to walk him now! Christina truly helped develop a stronger bond and mutual respect between Pluto and I.

Christina is superb! Our new dog Blue had developed separation anxiety. He destroyed our window blinds, couch and even partially chewed through our bedroom door. We had gotten complaints from neighbors about his whining and barking. Life had gotten very tense for all of us. We had previously tried a trainer with no results. As soon as Christina started working with Blue using her separation anxiety program he immediately began to improve. Christina was very professional, personable and patient and we were very impressed with her knowledge of dog behavior, she was also able to help us with Blue's nervousness on walks. Today, Blue barely pays attention as we leave and spends his time playing and napping while we are gone. The transformation has been amazing, Blue is now a much calmer, confident and happier dog and our quality of life has radically improved. We
highly recommend her!
