Delicious food, some of the best i've had. Great service and convenient mid-town location. Will definitely return.

I went here on a recommendation by a close friend. To cut to the chase, this restaurant is top notch. If you like shrimp you will die for the Grand Marnier Shrimp. Have it as an appetizer and the move on to the sweet and sour pork. If you like something a little on the spicy side try the Mongolian beef. It is top notch. This is a must visit Chinese restaurant. I am going back again with some business associates for lunch this week. This is just 3 days after my dinner there. Oh yes, it is that good!

fantastic dishes in a very inviting atmosphere - service is always top notch - I came in by accident as I was walking down the street and for some reason I was intrigued to check it out - I will be back for sure.

I have now had three Dim Sum meals at Lychee house and can say with a straight face, to the most critical Sinophile, that piece for piece, it is as good as Chinatown Brasserie and, unless youre looking for offal, curious seafood or the lower extremities of fowl, even better than most places in Chinatown, including the Golden Unicorn.

There are more than a dozen dishes ranging from familiar Seared Pork Dumplings, Shanghainese Soup Dumplings and Cha Shu Bao (Cantonese Roast Pork Buns), to the more exotic Pomegranate Shaped Peking-style Crispy Pork Shu Mai and nearly sublime Foie Gras Dumplings.

The dishes are made-to-order but what they have in common, whether they originated in Northern or Southern Chinese kitchens or in a Singapore Hawkers stall, is that theyre fresh and clean tasting and manageable in a bite or two.

Worth special consideration: The Foie Gras Dumplings are wrapped in a delicate transparent skin through which the wonderful earthy flavor of Foie Gras fills the mouth. The Coral dumplings also thin-skinned, is filled with a whole rather than chopped shrimp. The Singapore Hawker Style Fishhballs, with a crispy rice exterior, combine subtle ocean taste with a happy texture.

Over my three visits, Ive eaten every item on the Dim Sum menu. On each visit, I ate with one colleague, and we found that five plates, followed by an order of Shanghanese Flat Noodles w/ pork, were more than sufficient to walk away feeling well fed. A sweet dumpling called Snowflake Nuomici, which is charming in every sense of the word, completed each meal. This is one Hong Kong favorite that actually satisfies my very Western sweet tooth.

I went here the other day, saw this place randomly. Let me just say that i will be coming back atleast once a week. Best dim sum i have ever had, and they do really good lunch specials. I sugest you check this place out.

This place is so gooood. I work in the area and I have been getting my food from Lychee house with my work buddies. I frequently get the soup dumplings - which are really good, best i have ever had.

They are very friendly and have great service. Check this place out, you wont be disapointed.

This restaurant is one of the terrible service places in New York. Tonight (11/8/08) we had services from manager and other staff. The food was worst. We had stomach problem after we got to home. Never go to the place to eat. Chinese food cannot be trusted.

Pros: outside signing

Cons: staff attitude, food & sanitizing conditions

I have never written a bad review but this time I have no choice. To begin with, the staff was impatient because we only had appetizers. (As if we owed it to them to order more.) The last straw was that the Owner/manager actually came to our table after we paid the bill to tell us that our tip was not enough (and he was very surly about it, telling us that 'This is New York.'). News flash, genius:
1. Tips are discretionary. And we had already given 15%.
2. We are from New York, so we recognize obnoxious when we see it. We are never coming back.
3. No wonder the place was practically empty in the middle of the dinner rush hour in midtown.

I recently came for lunch to Our Place and was delighted with a friendly smile when I walked in the restaurant. I was seated almost immediately and greeted by my server with water and a smile. I ordered from the lunch menu and was greatly surprised at how big the portions were. Overall I was really happy with the quality, quantity, and the service that was given to me!

Pros: delicious chinese food

As Our Place is one of my favorite Midtown Chinese restaurants, I wanted to answer the recent review by DumpyBumpy. First, if DumpyBumpy was interested in the Shanghai dishes, he should have order off that section of the menu.
He/She's correct that most dishes in the menu are New York-style Chinese dishes but that's because those are the dishes the restaurant's customers seem to crave?and if the crowd at lunch and early dinner is any indication then that crowd pretty well reflects the ethnic make up of New York, including quite a number of Chinese. Perhaps the next time DumpyBumpy should order the Shanghai Style Whole Braised Pork Shoulder, which is a delight, or the Lion Head. My favorite is the Shredded Beef with Flowering Chives, which has never failed to satisfy my taste for complexity. There are a 1,000 Chinese restaurants where DumpyBumpy could order Moo Shu Pork, perhaps he should have ordered instead the always excellent Braised Soft Beancurd or the Flat Noodles. As for the Soup Dumpling, I'd put Our Place's
against Joe's Shanghai's (any Restaurant) any day of the week. In the final analysis, I don't know why DumpyBumpy, who described the service as "amazing" didn't ask to speak to the manager and express his wishes for "authentic" Shanghai dishes. The restaurant has always accommodated my requests. I think it's important to answer reviews of this nature, because its silly to judge a restaurant, based on one meal during a busy lunch hour, and Our Place is packed between 12 and 2:00. I've had disappointing dishes at Nobu and even Jean Georges but would not say they don't deserve their reputations.
In closing, after many visits over the course of the years, Our Place continues to hold its own against the City's best Chinese restaurants.

Pros: Authentic, Amazing Chinese Food

.

Reading all these amazing reviews and ratings, I thought I found a decent authentic Shanghai food place in NYC outside of Chinatown. Went with a friend for lunch today. Service at this place is amazing. However, when we were reading the menu, we already felt that this is an "American Chinese" instead of an "authentic Shanghai / Chinese" place. We also saw no Chinese customers in the restaurant. We ordered steamed dumplings and Moo Shu Pork. I have never seen Moo Shu, General Tao etc in any restaurants in Shanghai or other cities in China. The dumpling skin is way to thick (ok, this may be the Northern China style. But this is NOT the style I had in Shanghai!!).... Moo Shu Pork's filling is ok but nothing memorable. I couldnt finish my small portion share. I dont understand the good ratings this restaurant gets on different review pages. Maybe that is consistent with the fact that we saw no Chinese customer in the restaurant... Sadly we dont have too many other options in midtown.

Come here if you have craving for a <$10 quasi-Chinese / American Chinese lunch. But I do not plan to return.

Made reservations over a month ago for 15 people and then someone from the restaurant called me twice to confirm the reservation, once one week before and on the same day. The people were friendly on the phone and the when we arrived, the waiters were very patient and very nice. They seated us promptly and took their time with us and explained everything that was on the menu. Excellent selection on the menu and they were a decent size portion. We must have ordered about a dozen or so dishes, and not one of them did we have to complain about. Definately will return again. Thanks Our Place Shanghai Tea Garden for such a great time and great food.

I first went there on a business trip and loved their spicy sesame chicken! It is shredded chicken breast (all white meat!) and not at all like the weird chicken you get at some other restaurants (mystery meat). I took my boyfriend there recently and he loved it as well.. their spring rolls are quite tasty and their lo mein is also great!

Food is always superb, flavorful without being overwhelming, chicken dishes are excellent and reasonably priced for Manhattan. And take-out is just as good, with meals just as hot and delicious as dining in.

I was in NY on business and I went to Shanghai Tea Garden on the recommendation of this site. I was not disappointed. I was by myself and could not have been treated better. The service was fantastic. The staff and proprietor were incredibly attentive. I ordered the pan fried vegetable dumplings - a bit bland without the dipping sauce, but quite good with the sauce. I ordered the Shanghai style braised pork shoulder which was to die for. Unbelievable flavor and a huge portion. The waiter and proprietor both were giddy that I ordered it - they were incredibly proud of the dish - with good reason. The waiter indicated that it was his favorite dish. I can see why. I will definitely be back on my next trip! The only weird thing was some strange intermittent digital Chinese musical tones coming from somewhere. A small price to pay....

Authentic Chinese food is so hard to find and especially in midtown. I spent many years in L.A. so I know what good Chinese food tastes like. I also like going to Chinatown, but the hike from 56th (office location) is long so I tried Our Place. It's great. I love their duck wraps and scallops charddonnay!!! The staff is very accommodating too.

The food is top-notch, for certain. What sets Our Place apart, however, is the impeccable service. There seemed to be as many waiters as customers when we were there & they managed to be attentive & gracious without being overeager. That's a feat other restaurants don't always manage to pull off. I couldn't disagree with sn "dazed" more. The food is hardly expensive and if you're looking for high quality food with a cheaper price tag, good luck trying to find a restaurant like Our Place in MIDTOWN! The price is more costly than say, Flushing, but so is the quality of the food, the great service, and the location.

The restaurant is small but I just had the most HEAVENLY banquet dinner (Our Place had a special Chinese New Year dinner menu). This was only my 2nd time to Our Place but I'll be coming back for more. Thank you Liza for introducing me to this place!

You can get more authentic Shanghai cuisine in several Chinatown establishments, and a better value in some of them as well. But they also tend to be crowded dumps of questionable cleanliness. A Chinese person used to the City's most authenitc food may balk a bit at Our Place, as the more expensive and refined cuisine here smoothes the edges off some traditional dishes and most recipes seem conceived with a cognizance of a western palate. Well, I'm western and I think the food is great. Great ingredients, fantastic flavor. The soup dumplings are very good, as are the rice cake dishes. The beef and pork used in their food is excellent -- flavorful and tender and definitely NOT the "mystery meat" occasionally found elsewhere. The decor is appealing; quiet and refined, yet not stuffy. The service is attentive and friendly. Portions are medium-to-large, depending on what you get.
