A great, great school. The teachers are amazing, and the staff is competant. This school has benefited from lots of parent involvement, which can be a double edged sword at times.

It is not as strictly Montessori as some may like, but has a Montessori feel within a charter school environment. And the average class size is 25 students for 2 teachers! With looming teacher layoffs and budget cuts, that alone would make me think about switching.

My advice: go in with an open mind and see what you think. It is not without sacrifice (no playground, no hot lunch), but overall, fantastic academically and socially for my kids. I can't imagine sending them back to public school after they have had so much personal attention from their teachers here. Overall, it is worth looking into to see if it is a good fit for your family - it has been for mine!

We have been at this school for 2 years and really love it. I think many of the previous reviewers have private school expectations from a charter school. To be fair, it is NOT a private school with unlimited funding and resources. It is NOT a perfect environment, staffed by perfect people.

What it IS is a great improvement over public school that incorporates a Montessori learning environment. It is not "pure" Montessori - but it does incorporate Montessori principles and blend them with public school requirements. For me, I know it is not perfect, but it is such a huge improvement over the overcrowded public school, I am willing to put up with a few imperfections.

What I love:

The teachers are committed, caring and fantastic. I have absolutely no complaints. They communicate with me about my child's progress, problems and concerns. My child is definately not without his problems, and I feel the teacher cares about him as a person and wants him to succeed.

The PTO does have a lot of fundraisers, but I have never been to a school that didn't. If you don't like them, don't participate. Simple. Plus, they are raising money for the use of the school, not for their own ventures, I believe a previous posting was confused about that point. But again, if you don't like it, participation is voluntary.

So if you like the Montessori philosophy, if you want a great learning environment for your child where he can progress at his own pace, and you don't have the resources or desire to send your child to a private school; Silver Sands Montessori is worth checking out. It has been a very positive thing for our family, and it could be for yours as well!

My child has attended SSCS since the begining and I have seen alot of improvements. It is a new school and funds are limited so they do need to raise funds for the playground. The PTO is doing most of all the fund raisers and it is for them not the school. So if more parents would get involved with raising money for the school then maybe we can get the rest of the money we need for the playground. We are looking forward to next year.

Their mission statement per website: To provide quality Montessori education in an environment that encourages a child??s love of learning and respect for self, others, community and the world.

My child went last year and this year and has not been encouraged this year or received quality education. We will be leaving this school because they seem to only care about is fund raising for a playground that could have been built already.

I would not recommend SSMCS to children that aren't exceptionally well behaved (e.g. 100% of the time) students. I was very honest with them on my childrens needs, they ignored me, gave me no feedback for nearly a month (I did ask, trust me), then essentially asked us to leave the school when problems arose the next month. I do not believe they are well equipped and would agree with previous post on alignment with the Montessori Methodology. My children are back in private school doing fabulous.

I am disappointed that a school can call itself Montessori, yet does not invoke the practices and curriculum of the philosophy of Dr. Montessori. My child has since left the school and I now have him enrolled in a true Montessori environment. The children have no traditional playground at Silver Sands and are forced to play in the parking lot that is 'coned off' so drivers don't pass the barriers. It seems unsafe and I can not figure out how Clark County approved this site.

We like SSMC charter school a lot. It is not perfect, but it has a lot going for it. The kids get much more individualized attention than they would get in a regular public school with 30 kids to one teacher. SSMC has 2 teachers to about 24 kids. They have edible gardens all around the property, and they value the opinions and decisions of the kids. I have a fourth grader that is very self motivated and is thriving in this environment, and a 1st grader that is not nearly as driven, who is also improving and starting to get some confidence. The school does not have a playground which is a big sticking point for some and it is a disapointment, however being a small school makes it very hard to raise the 50k plus that it will cost. All of the PTO money is being saved to go toward the playground, with the exception of spending money for events like the Spring Carnival and Holiday Extravaganza. The school also does not provide lunches which means you have to make lunch everyday. I think this is common with Charter Schools. You get the benefit of a private school type education with a few differences for the cost of public school.

We love Silver Sands Montessori. My daughter is in kindergarten and it has been a fantastic experience for her. Miss Jena is a fabulous teacher. My daughter came from a structured, highly academic preschool and has been able to increase her knowledge and grow academically throughout the year and this would not have been possible at a public school with the current student/teacher ratio and curriculum. There is great parent involvement and there is a wonderful community feel to this small school. Great focus on other cultures and continents.

Silver Sands Montessori is a wonderful school with high academic standards that values differences within the school community and truly works to instill a love of learning in each child by nurturing their unique abilities.
